Nice show. I am enjoying the shows this year. I like most of them. Love Bluecoats. Love Phantom. Love Crown. And I do like Blue Devils as well. I really enjoy Boston, Colts, Blue Stars and Mandarins are fantastic. To defend the Blue Devils a little I will say this: when they were trying more advanced and innovative show concepts like in 2008 (for that time), 2010, 2012, 2013, it seemed they got a lot of negative comments and the crowds seemed to give them golf claps. So I think they went back to the drawing board and found success with 2014 and even more so with 2015 (from an audience appreciation standpoint). From 2015 on they have been quite enjoyable and in the case of their 2017 and 2019 shows were BIG fan favorites. I also believe they are a corps that believes you don't need to reinvent the wheel every year. They almost always retain certain visual and musical ideas from year to year, only doing so within a new framework. I actually don't mind that. I think the reason it becomes more of a talking point with many on DCP, KZbin and elsewhere is because they win so often. If they were not winning so much most people would likely enjoy them and point to their unique style as a nice formula the same way many fans want to see Phantom do a wedge or leg kick or big symphonic music, etc. But because BD wins so much the conversation eludes to their formula as a bad thing...that they are working the judging sheets just for sheer score. Now in fairness, when you consider the talent BD has, it would be nice to see them take more risks and change the styles up a bit more, but I think they have been enjoying the fact that fans have really gravitated to their shows since 2015. And I would too if I were them. I do think Bluecoats have a shot at the title this year, but BD is really really good in all captions. It will be close. I love Carolina's music and I feel they can be top 3 or 4. I am not sure they have the legs in that show to be top 2 but I would love to see it. Same is true with Boston. I love that show. As of now they have not really tied in the GLITCH theme during the course of the show other than a little at the intro. Maybe this can help them as they layer and add during the season. I like SCV a lot and the new uniforms do not bother me. The show music is good but I am not sure if the concept is being projected well and GE may be tough to come by for them. In contrast Phantom has a killer show with great GE potential. Mandarins are in a similar boat to Phantom. Great show and great potential. I look forward to seeing if Cavaliers can clean and tweak this show into something better. This is the 3rd year in a row where I feel their design team has not had a coherent show ready for the kids. I am rooting for them. Still so many corps to see but I am looking forward to a competitive and fun season.

Judges will define the near-term future of the activity this year more than most via what they award as GE. Assuming SCV can kick performance levels up considerably, judges may define that as excellence in GE, and SCV could end up as high as 5th or maybe even 4th. If not, then they're probably destined for 7th. Bloo is in a similar position, anywhere from 1st to 4th.

GE1 is visual effect and GE2 is musical effect. When they have four panel GE judges then you get two GE VIS and GE MUS judges.

Let me preface this by saying, I will never, ever disparage the time and the effort that these young people put out to participate in this activity. They should all be recognized and applauded. It doesn’t matter if you’re marching in a top 10 corps or you are marching in the last place corps. That being said after watching drum Corps for the past 40 years, it’s almost unrecognizable and not in a good way. We have costumes now rather than uniforms. The corps have lost their sense of identity. Show design has evolved to the point where I feel like I’m watching WGI shows outside. Yes the programs are technically proficient and set new standards. All I know is when I go to a show now it’s rare that I get goosebumps and I used to get them all the time.

I completely agree, except that I don't go to shows anymore. There are a few that I wish I hadn't missed (SCV 2018 in particular), but there is a show near me in about 10 days that I didn't for a minute even consider buying tickets for. Who wants to pay money to be angry or sad for 2 hours?

When did uniform reveals become like Vogue photoshoots? And isn't that, in itself, indicative of a problem?

I mean consider the fact that the designer and company want their products to be shown off to directors/admins of scholastic groups can see what can be achieved by the designer/company. Does it seem silly to us when it was never a thing to do? Yeah but like any sport, there's always uniform shoots showcasing the "new" look. I don't understand how a new look every year is economically feasible unless the material is just that cheap since we're not working with wool/heavy hitter stuff that is supposed to last more than one season.

​@@RVVDontThey get donors to "dress the corps." The parents and other supporters pay so that they are able to take them home at the end of the season.

I follow the West Coast shows and I thought SCV’s scores were more of the judges saying great to have you back on tour instead of hey great show Vanguard. BD seems to get a 5 points bonus in scoring for corps history.

Arrowhead Stadium is probably on its last legs. Chiefs want something better & KC, Kansas may give it to them.

Heavy edits Love classic uniforms but they are never coming back folks. You can't stick kids in wool/old style uniforms. There are benefits to the costumes that uniforms couldn't do. Crisp visual lines on the body, design freedom, performer comfort. Lots of "bad" looks this year. BD upclose those color pieces on the front look poorly made. Blue Stars looks flat/screen printed and just cheap. Love Colts and Bluecoats. Great choices there. Cavaliers are just terrible to look at and the show man, just disappointing. I don't feel it at all. There are a few "BOA" style shows which I don't like seeing. Blue Stars - Boston if they do not design with quality will end up a glorified BOA show. I was happy to see SCV coming out and getting it. I was afraid the design was going to be a bad product. Love what the Bluecoats are doing. BD, they're good. They are really good but I think BC will beat that.

But here is the thing look at cavaliers in 2023 very much a cavalier looking corecops yet they use the modern materials fabrics That work better with today's visual So why can't do more like that Then what they're doing now?

Innovation is great when it grows from a desire to be objectively better. However, innovation, BY ITSELF, is absolutely worthless. Frankly, it's trite and lazy and will inevitably lead to the diminishment of the activity, as it has already.

I could go on, negatively, about uniforms this year. It is what it is. Everyone is blue, wrong color with Corp identity, etc, but I really like everything about Phantom! Speaking of the Troopers, I see them IN PERSON this weekend! Really excited!
