9:30 sure you CAN get a really good sound from a marching horn, and you CAN play an unmicd solo like that with one but they arent looking for a good sound, theyre looking for the best possible sound, which means using the best possible instrument for the occasion, with the best playing conditions(not being required to project across a field); theres a pretty much any professional ensemble outside of DCI is micd up with all top tier instruments; they simply sound better like that and a crown soloist is 100% at a skill level where these nuances would have an effect on the quality of sound in the end, DCI is a musical activity, and adding in spots like this with mics and concert instruments makes the music more musical, and dont take away from the big loud ensemble moments; the alternative is just a worse version, with an unmicd solo on marching horns

the heavy synth bass(and pit in general) is just a flo issue; their recordings sound like doodoo every time notice at 7:00 you cannot hear the hornline whatsoever, but the trumpets are playing the same thing as the pre-recorded strings and yet you cannot hear it at all in the recording

The demise of 27th first was the loss of George Kigali as visual designer after 81. Then in 82 they lost brass arranger jim wedge. These two things dropped the lancers from top tier dci corps to bottom tier. And of course they went broke and couldn't attract new members. That was it.

I am for expanding to 15 for finals BUUUUUUUUUUT still 12 finalists that are scored and then exhibitions for All-Age A/Open/World and Open Class Champion and the last place corps from prelims. We have intermissions in finals that we can put those champions on display. Last Place Prelims Exhibition All Age A Open Class Champion Finalsts 12-9 Intermission All Age Open Finalists 8-5 Intermission All Age World Finalists 4-1

You hit it on the head as the years before they ran to a place then did a trick. Then ran to another spot and did a trick, etc. This year they did some to match the music. It was more fun to watch than just tricks…which ignored good body work.

15 corps Finals would diminsh the exclusivity of being "In Finals." A reduction to 10 corps would increase that exclusivity and lessen the time needed for Finals and Retreat. Just sayin... 😎

The quality of shows in 12th place is now comparable to what used to be in 10th place. With so many groups collapsing over the past few decades, the talent level has increased significantly beyond 12th place.

I would agree from a logistical standpoint that finals shouldn’t remain top 12. Semifinals and quarterfinals receive more airtime these days anyways.

I never got into boston - the show was a series of moments that really didnt connect for me. Coats - had a show put together that was so well connected to a theme. there was nothing extemporaneous to its audio visual concept.(i.e. no more dance breaks)

For years I have been searching for a single recording, 1974 dci show of the 10th place finisher and fifth best horn line of the Auburn Purple Lancers. Seems to be no account of this show anywhere (a shame). Last year this corps existed. One fine corps.can anyone help relive this once in a lifetime event. Thanks.

I've always respected how you give your criticisms free of judgment for the artform today. I see too many people just say the nastiest things about the performers, the staff members, the shows, and the activity as a whole. Its nice to have people like you and the rest of the crew who have that personal experience, but still just as much love. Thank yall for another great season. Cant wait to tune in for 2025!

Not sure there was anything weird or particularly funky about scoring for Boston's percussion section as they hit their finals week stride. Frankly, there's been a lot of much deserved hype about their line over the last three years. However, they have a tendency to choke once they arrive in Indy. I was there in 2022 and observed it with my own ears. They played well all summer, but not as well as some other lines when it was showtime in Indy (and, yes, Bluecoats deserved to win the Sanford that summer no matter how many amateurs on social media suggest otherwise). Just my eight cents on the matter. As always, thanks so much for sharing...

Blooo's connection with the audience is so strong that they might be the only corps that could have done this show successfully... Anyone else would likely have received a reaction more like that of Star '93...
@squillz8310
@squillz8310 9 күн бұрын
This is an interesting point. While I don't fully agree personally, I do agree that the way Bloo connects with the audience is second to none. The only other corps that had such a reaction and connection was Phantom, which makes sense. But yeah, if BD or Boston or Crown or even Phantom put this show on, it would've been such a departure from their norms. I think it definitely would've been met with even more adverse reactions than it did with Bloo.
@michaelgwfrogwelge
@michaelgwfrogwelge 4 күн бұрын
@@squillz8310 Phantom's connection is only year-to-year, largely due to the show they are doing in the year. Bloo's connection goes all the way back to DCM '87, the time the "Blooo, Blooo, Blooo" began. (I was lucky enough to be there and be one of the first to call it out.)

That Guard soloist at the end of the show is a 4 year veteran and is only a Freshman in college. Mike Townsend and Heather Graham are absolutely amazing. Also props to that brass soloist what great control I think it’s only a matter of time before Boston wins gold and it will be very soon.

The Pokémon section is the section before the percussion feature. Starts with the big brass run. The percussion feature is Streets of Rage. Now that I think about it the high brass feature after that is also streets of rage.

It was indeed an amazing show, brilliantly executed, they simply got outdesigned by BAC and BLoo this year. IN a sense, that is a dice roll every year since you dont know what others are doing. Ive adored the fact that Troopers decided in 2022, that they didnt GAF what anyone else was doing, they were gonna go thematic and do a whole story.

Using the Diablo III Openign movement music to open this show is AWESOME.. as a 11 year player of Diablo 3 I was ecstatic. I know Russell Brower and it had to be a big ego stroke to have them use taht music. All those dissonant and minor notes just make your hair stand up! It would be fascinating to see how much game traffic this program ended up sending to Diablo if there were any way to quantify it. And of course the small Diablo leitmotif appearance between Pokemon and the Ballad.

I’ve watched the Blue Devils show twice and neither experience grabbed me. Both times were on my small phone screen, so I came home to watch it on my full computer screen to give fair feedback. The band was a big blob of dark colors (black/purple) throughout. The capes did not add interest but added to the darkness. This BD show visually was not interesting at all. Thank goodness for the color guard and their reveal was fabulous. Their filling out the field with colorful flags gave interest to this show. If the Color Guard instructor comes out of the university system, the focus isn’t the basics of ballet/tap/jazz anymore - it’a all Modern Dance - good observation. The ballad section was lovely. Great soloists and percussion. After the piccolo duet, BD sounded like a copy of Carolina Crown. Bottom line, this Blue Devil selection did not emotionally or visually pull me into this romantics' storyline. The audience wasn’t reacting that much either. Was there a storyline or just a bunch of unique music selections thrown together? This visual mess didn’t feel like a 3rd place win to me, more like 4th or 5th place. - Theatre Director for 35 years, Instrumentalist for 50+ years

I pretty much agree with your assessments... on MY sheets I had Phantom in 3rd and BD in 4th, but MY sheets are not the ones that matter unfortunately. Their guard / visual designers are not from the university pipeline however ... Visual design is Scott Chandler and he has been doing the choreo / design for BD for decades and guard is headed up by TJ Doucette who has been full time with BD since like 1985.
