Why I Zoom? Well, before I started filming bands, I spent 8 years as web developer, graphic designer and band photographer. I created and coded Blackcollegebands.com (1998), which eventually turned into Marchingsport (2002). Site wise I’d set out to create a site that covered games every weekend then post the work online right after the games happened, kind of like an ESPN for bands. I spent most of my time then physically in the stands and on the field photographing Black College Bands. I also captured audio of the Post Game battles. At the time it was MUCH easier to get photos and audio on the web then video (1998-2005). I started filming bands by happenstance. It was kind of the right time and right place for where the internet was at the moment. Broadband connections were starting to become common place in households as opposed to dial up connections. I started integrated video more into my work in 2005, then launched the Marching Network in the Summer of 2006. For those who remember it, the Marching Network was pretty much what KZbin is now for the Band Community. A place where people went to upload and watch our culture. It was also as I would like to call it “a reverse engineered television network” in that the primary content was Internet Video On Demand, but I also actually had a band television show that aired in several local markets. That first year of doing video wasn’t as exciting compared to what I’d been doing for almost the last decade photographing bands… My objective as a photographer was to show the grit and intensity of the Band World… Capture it as bandheads actually see opponents. It was definitely a trend at the time to simply set a camera in front the band, hit record and walk away. Artistically that wasn’t me. I eventually found a way within video to merge what I was doing via photographer. As a photographer, you are always looking for where the action of the shot is happening at that particular moment. That’s what I’m going for. It seems like a lot of people just think I’m “randomly zooming in”, hopefully this gives you context and a better lens through which to view the work.
