This has been a conversation since my dad was at Howard in the 1960s. It’s becoming clear to me that we need to have a different framing of this issue to actually make a difference.

Great convo. Brother Parks had excellent commentary. Byron makes a great point, there’s many traditions of hazing in many social groups. Not to say it’s right, just more accepted.

I know these organizations do good charity work and raise money for education but on social media I more often see Founders Day recognition and social events.

I would even go as far as arguing that spaces like these black Greek organizations, are the foster spaces for lukewarm liberal politics that’s more of photo ops and not really revolutionary ground work, at least not like they were . I mean raising a million a day for HBCUs is good, but attacking child poverty and hunger in YOUR inner cities and rural locales is much better.

Could it be that the shift away from political activism is due to the fact that much the struggles in the African American community are not structural but cultural and activism needs to shift to the messy work of community work.

👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Couldn’t have said it better. We look for external factors to constantly blame for the issues in the community ignoring the cultural issues that hinder our progress

Nah, the structural issues were never adequately addressed. African Americans were just defanged politically and swept aside by the political establishment. There are certainly cultural issues that we as a community need to deal with, but those problems and the inability of the community to address them are also a result of the political landscape and our consistent disenfranchisement.

Does this mean that black students can still opt to join a non black group and are non black people allowed to join theirs?

The young want a rite of passage experience, and if the org doesn’t give it to them they’ll make one up. If you had doctors and nurses pledging, it should be obvious that the issue is bigger than Black and Old Gold, Pink & Green, Crimson & Cream, etc.
