It doesn't seem to be a certain scale. It's the learning the way Petrucci uses vibrato and how he uses sweeps and the certain way he chooses melodies and rhythm. That's why Marco is so good. He understands all the little stuff about Petrucci.

It's used for Legato playing, and different tapping stuff. As the other guy said it's used to dampen the strings so when you are tapping or playing Legato, you don't get string buzz from the other strings ringing.
