I love how Marco is encouraging critical thinking when approaching art. Often it's easy and safe to robotically copy what's in front of you. Marco, on the other hand, understands how to interpret a scene in an artistic manner - and with purpose. It can be quite challenging and unnatural at first, sure, but is a necessity in any of our art.

Can we just appreciate how well done and edited this video is?! It's not just a drawing while him explaining. There are visual animated lines to help explain his point. There's the repainting of the "good" paintings into ones without the "difference" element to help prove his point.

@AmanaHB3 жыл бұрын
This is one of the most important things that artists need to know. At first I used to thini that as long the drawing is realistic or matches the reference it's perfect. But in reality design is essencial. It can happen by making relation between what we're painting and abstract shapes/colours... Etc
@Silbusia3 жыл бұрын
This is so true! I started with realistic painting and sticking 1:1 to a reference because I was learning how things look like and how to paint them first but I got stuck on it and not so long ago I realised how much it's messing up paintings instead :D Designing while using references - that's the goal, because that's what makes paintings amazing :) (plus storytelling for illustrations and that needs a lot of designing :D)
@princessthyemis2 жыл бұрын
Yeah! I never even thought of it but now I'm SOOOO glad I found this video. He describes it so well. This will be essential for the background paintings I want to make!

I love how today's artists are adapting to Painterly style , it gives so much personality than the smooth renders in my opinion... Was afraid to go with this style as people might think of it as incomplete and not rendered enough but then I came across martin and marco and now am confident about and don't render that brush strokes that I leave intentionaly... Thankyou so much for making it a standard .

I always recommend people to get into more than one artistic hobby. I never really got these concepts for drawing until I started playing guitar and trying to construct riffs and songs. Music helped me realize that's a fine balance of creating a pattern and altering that pattern into new and unexpected things. Drawing and guitar have both helped me significantly with writing to, especially when it comes to pacing and "trimming the fat".
