🎸THE GUITAR I AM USING IN THIS VIDEO
Since you ask all the time, guys, I decided to let you know which guitar I am using in each video. Today I have been using my Eko Massimo Varini Signature. (THIS IS NOT A SPONSOR).
🎸ABOUT THIS GUITAR LESSON
Hey guys, in this lesson, I am going to show you a simple exercise that should help you with fret memorization.
I started playing guitar when I was a little kid. My first teacher was bad and he taught me the guitar for two years. Fortunately, after a couple of years, my dad took me a better one.
So, in my first lesson with him, he said, "Ok, you have been practicing for two years. Can you please play the note F starting from the low E string up to the top E string without skipping a string?"
It took me about twenty seconds to play all the Fs, and I was already sweating!
Now, he was a talented teacher! And, in one moment, he showed me two things:
First! I wasn't able to navigate the fretboard with confidence.
Second! Playing the same notes on adjacent strings gives you a pattern.
In this lesson, I am going to show you a simple exercise that will help you with fret memorization. We will be playing one note on each string with the metronome (no time to think).
This exercise can drive you crazy! After years of playing guitar, I am still messing notes up! However, it will help you a lot with fretboard navigation and fretboard knowledge.
Good luck guys.

🎸FAQs:
Are you a full-time KZbinr?
Yes, I am on KZbin as Marco Cirillo, and I promote my videos on my website BlitzGuitar.com. All the courses I post online are available on my Patreon page bit.ly/2rMAPYG
How long have you been playing guitar?
I started playing guitar when I was 10 years old, so it has been more than 20 years. I have always loved fingerpicking guitar, so this is why all my tutorials focus on this topic.
Why are you on Patreon?
Patreon is great! It allows creators to make money doing what they love. On Patreon, I can share my guitar lessons with my Patrons and get paid for it. As a creator, I feel like Patreon really made a massive difference in the way I share my content :)
Do you do concerts?
I used to do a lot of gigs in the past. London is a great place to play music almost every day. When my KZbin channel started to grow, I decided to go all-in and try to help as many people as possible learning guitar. This goal takes all the time I have available, so I am not doing any gig or concert atm.

I remember back in 1984 when my guitar teacher made a mistake in my lesson. He made two within a couple minutes. It was actually helpful to know he made mistakes and was actually human on the guitar. I think it helps.

I used this exact same exercise years ago and it is actually THE best fretboard memorization I've come across. A very cool variation I used to practice was playing a note on all strings and then jumping to its perfect 4th or perfect 5th. Play all strings again and jump to the next one. This reveals a lot of patterns on the fretboard and it's also perfect as ear training for the perfect intervals.

An easier way to memorize is to remember that the difference goes 7-5-7-4-5 going from low to high so take F= 1on Low E, 8 on A =7; 8 to 3 on D = 5; 3 to 10 on g = 7; 10 to 6 on B = 4; 6 to 1 on high e = 5 so whatever note you start on with the low e add 7 for the a string and so on with the 7-5-7-4-5 but if u start C and go high to low the pattern is 5-7-5-4-7 so c would be 8 on low e; 3 on a = 5: 3 to 10 on d = 7; 10 to 5 on g = 5; 5 to 1 on b = 4; 1 to 8 on high e = 7 just remember which pattern up or down depending on where u start and the next string will be correct low to high 7-5-7-4-5 or high to low 5-7-5-4-7 this may sound confusing but walk through it once and you will see

An even easier way is to notice that the F is 1 from the start point of the lower section (nut) on the low E and 1 from the start point of the upper section (fret 7) on the A. Then you just continue going up 2 frets from the previous note in each section until you come to B which is 3 frets up. The high E is just the same as the low E.

Nice lesson, an interesting variant is change the notes in 4ths or 5ths i.e. start on C and find all C's, then F, Bb, Eb and cycle all the way back to F. Or C, G, D, ..., C. Also, reverse the string order i.e. high E to low E.

You are an excellent teacher Marco, and your courses available on Udemy are world-class; I know, I've bought 'em all ! - You've jumped a step on this (excellent) exercise perhaps? My rule is ... 1) find the note on low E string, then... 2) just count up 7 frets on the next string ie A; if you 'hit' the 12th fret and still have more counting to do, zing back to fret Zero (the nut) and carry on counting 3) from G to B strings, just count up 8 instead of the usual 7 frets 4) from B to high E, count 7 frets up Soon as that's all figured out, then I'm gonna do your exercise til I go crazy ! Wishing you continued success in your teaching and playing

Love this exercise. So many videos are titled how to learn the fretboard and all they do is show you how to identify notes on a particular string by talking about intervals. In the end it comes down to repetition so that your hand does it automatically in a split second. Learners don't get intimated. Essentially it's 120 note positions. Most people can do it quite easily but like everything it takes work and practice. The more you work and practice the quicker you will get there. Always bear in mind the brain is a learning machine. I think it actually learns better from mistakes than when you get it right so never be afraid to make mistakes. You are training your ear and your eyes as you are going along.

It is a great exercise! I've learned in the same way the notes on the fretboard but also moved from the high E to the low E string - in this video you just go from low E to high E. Also, I've changed the note when I turned back from high E to low. If you are using metronome and keep drilling this exercise, you are going to memorize the notes on the fretboard, guaranteed!

Similar to another one I found earlier, but you break the neck into 2 sections. No matter what anyone comes up with,, it all boils down to repetition until you know the notes. Much as we would love to have a simple (no work) method to learn the neck of the guitar, it's usually going to take a fair bit of work to finally get it under your fingers. Well worth the time though because knowing the neck of your guitar opens so many doors.

Playing scales all around freetbord from root to root..Ocatave root notes is how i learn to SEE it. if u can Not see it u can not play it at least in time. My opinion For beginers : learn slowly 5 position of minor pentatonic.always learn with metronome when sliding from one position to another..Maybe in the begining isnt very musicaly but having fun learning playing..pentatonic diatonic scales u will open doors to music..just my 2 cents

This is the easier way to remember to memorize the fretboard as a beginner who just learning guitar for about 50 days. I figure out each note in same string first then same notes in different strings after all I start to use metronome for A, B and go on at 60 bpm and increase everyday, now just about 20 days I can play any different note in 6 strings at 95 bpm. BUT the only problem is if you point out any note in fretboard I still can't say it out in 1 sec

Very good Marco but I have a question. It is a question I seem to have to ask with all the videos about "Memorizing" the fretboard. To say I have memorized it, then if someone says, for example String 4 (D string) fret 8 I must respond immediately A# (or Bb). I can't. If someone said "Find all the A#'s" I could use the system . If I am on the D string fret 8 I can use the system to find A# on the 5th and 3rd strings quite easily, but if I am on the D string 8th fret and I want to find say the closest F# I can't. So I will not have memorized the fretboard. What I have done will to have learned another method how to negotiate the Fretboard.

I've played the guitar for 10s of thousands of hours.. Many different styles. I have only watched 1/2 of the video. I am going to try it cold..In my head I know it will be an amazing performance. NOT SO.. Point is well taken. I am totally cheating. I already did this partially mentally.. There will only be 22 Frets on the average guitar . My strat copy has only 22. I had a duh momrnt.. I already know that my E string Electric only has does not have 24 frets.(2 octaves..24 semi tones) Electrics have only 22 Frets..Your mentor picked the hardest note. But actually one the best notes too. A LITTLE THOUGHT .This actually is very eye opening. The A string the same. It would need 24 frets.. D to D same.. Pretty much note than 2 octaves on any string on a 22 fret guitar. So I mentally cut to the chase.. The middle of the octave is 3 full tones or the tritone or the flatted fifth I'll do this in the key of C first.. Whole tones ... C to D D to E E to Gb. G is the five chord of C. Gb- Ab Ab-Bb Bb-C. We just proved that the tritone splits the octave. So in just about a minute..I see that s 22 string guitar has no three octave notes. Looking at 22 notes or semitones on a piano is 12 plus about 9frets. I don't think it is possible to have any note repeated more thantimed on a string. So 12times would be the max and it will be equal or lower than that.
