People love talking about the amazing blending properties of oil paints, but I would also like to mention that they are very good for „classic mini painting techniques“. Edge highlighting with oil paints is such a joy, because the consistency and flow is always the same. Also just a bit of paint on your brush lasts forever, no more constantly going back to your palette and cleaning the brush all the time. Painting with oils is not scary at all, go for it :)

@@afternoondelight6322 Windsor and Newton water mixable oils are a student grade paint. So are the Winton paints that he is using. They have less of a pigment load than artist grade paints. They are cheaper and not quite as much of a pop as artist grades will give you. I think both are a valid options for miniatures, especially if you are new to oils. Try the water mixable oils and then upgrade if you like them. I been using nothing but oils for 10 years.

If you cannot get access to odourless white spirit, use baby oil. We use it in the studio with 10-12 students and there is no smell and it cleans brushes and dilutes washes just as well :)

Hi Sam, I'm just trawling through Marco's comment section at the mo and stumbled upon your potential gem of info. Does baby oil reactivate oil paints in a similar way to white spirit? I'm interested as I've dabbled in oil painting, however I've been trying to use non toxic products wherever I can (like experimenting with lavender oil as a drying agent, it kinda worked and my miniature smelt great as well, haha). Cheers

I've watched this video very carefully, and it gives many important tips, and DEBUNKS some VERY COMMON and prevalent misconceptions, namely: 1) you HAVE to varnish acrylic coats before applying oils and mineral spirits... 2) mineral spirits WILL attack acrylic coats... 3) you CAN'T paint acrylics over coats of oils... these are all FALSE, as Marco points out time after time in his videos. If you watch most other videos about using oils on miniature painting, you see these misconceptions repeated time and time again. If they were true, I think using oils would be very troublesome indeed. It's good to have someone who actually knows what they're talking about. ;) Anyways, you CAN varmish acrylic coats before applying oils as it helps the flow (as Marco shows), but what do you think acrylic varnishes are made of, eh?

I recently did an oil wash for the first time to achieve a grime effect. What I loved was when i came back in with some GW washes, that the oil layer on the model actually was resistant to the wash. I LOVED the effect. It made it feel far more like the wash was hitting an actual plastic body, and the way it separated and pooled was super interesting. I had never considered how the acrylic would work ontop of the oil layer, but the effect was cool and interesting and instead of varnishing it away i kept it, and my final acrylic washes ended up having a great and natural pooling effect and not just seeping down into the layers below. I love finding cool interactions and oils have really opened my eyes to how you can use the various properties of both acrylics and oils to get a wide range of results that the mediums dont achieve alone.

I needed this vid. The clear laying out of a simple practical setup that works, and why helps. It may seem simple or obvious but I've changed how I work and it really helps. Watching it (just after the Wurmspat too) one thing really leaps out, it's important Marco. I understand the need to produce well constructed, well edited, professional quality vids. They represent you and the project, they need to be this great, they need the specific structured content in order to be teaching using a remote media. BUT Marco that section at the end of just watching you paint, just play around with tones, transitions, blends on the figure was marvellous, it had an enormous value to my oilwork in itself. Sometimes as well as absorbing the theory and the approach you just need to also see it at work too. That leg transformed five or six times, it was like watching really good closeup magic. I needed to see that by using just tiny amounts of paint I can do that to keep refining and just overpaint mistaken choices of colour into the better results I'd hoped for. Seems obvious but to a less confident painter it was transforming. So long as I just use sheens of new paint and don't ever cake it! I've a hand tremor from a spinal issue and I need to fix and rework my stuff a lot. The love of painting really doesn't suit it! Frustration and disappointment makes me put down my brush a lot. You teaching me a much more forgiving technique is an extraordinary gift mate. Please seriously consider a new class of vid, mark the category clearly to separate them from the main brand, but please just show us you painting. Whatever you're doing, and of course competition entries and other stuff needs to be private but you've said in the past you paint every day - please show us as much as you can stand to of it. As the painter you are I don't think the extraordinary value of it to learners would occur to you. Don't worry about the editing - it's the brushstrokes Don't worry about skipping the stuff where setting up the camera to cover another part of the process would waste time and be a pain. Just dump out all you can stand to, marked clearly as unedited, raw footage and entirely separate from your tutorial work. Putting them behind the patreon wall like you did with the Wurmspat would keep it from distorting outside impressions of the brand. We're all already sold on the Marco project! Please Marco, we just need to see and learn from/get inspired by the everyday magic. Plus I now have three glass palettes that came out of picture frames from the charity shop (had to burn the pictures of kittens as shepherdesses though so the binman wouldn't ever see them). That also means I can lay my bits of paper under them with previous successful tones and transitions to use as reference targets. From now on I'll record them on strips cut to fit across the palette! Practical evolution of my table by the power of NJM

I totally agree. Ive watched all your videos but the most I learned from you with oils is youy brush strokes and palette. James Wappel does a lot of work with oils as well in a long 3+ hour format he initially started on KZbin but moved to twitch because of the difficulty with live streaming. All he does now is live stream his painting session, then posts recordings of it for his patreon supporters and sometimes to KZbin to build up his audience. You both work very differently with oils. It's especially neat to see the different styles.

I've been encouraged to try oils a few months ago, and lately I've been experimenting with using a 100% oil workflow on my minis haha. I've started incorporating canvas techniques and adapting them to minis to see how well they work; stuff like "staining the canvas" with a base tone, doing a value sketch prior to applying colors, etc. It's been quite the journey but it's so fun and satisfying when you find a technique that works for you and produces unique results! Thanks a lot for the inspiration and the great tips as always :D

I'm so glad I came back to watch this again after a year. I've really struggled with painting smoothly or in detail with oils, because I was following advice from others, leaving my paints out to drain the oil. It turns out that different preparation is needed for different techniques, and for detail, you need to thin the paint (I now use 10/90 linseed oil and solvent) not thicken it. Thanks Marco!

The "drain the oil with cardboard" advice that goes around is *really* bad advice. It's just going to cause underbinding. I have no idea where it came from, but I really wish people would stop parroting that one.

When I learned to paint figures, I learned with oils, as there was a great figure painter in my area who used them. I find them much easier to use and think about than acrylics. It's much easier for me to blend nice skin tones using oils than trying to glaze and blend and layer acrylics.

The tri-layer style of painting was in regular use in the Wargaming hobby 40+ years ago - as is evidenced by photos in Military Modeling and Miniature Wargaming magazines.

Very solid video with extremely useful information. The one thing I would add is that you really don't want to just throw the wipe rags into the trash and discard them. The drying process that the oils go through is exothermic and if confined the rags can spontaneously combust. This can make for really interesting stories, but is otherwise contraindicated. 8-) Set the rags out to dry before discarding them. When dry they should be safe.

Thanks nice thorough video. In my humble experience, though you don't "need" to varnish over acrylic before using oils. It is still a very practical way of proceeding. For example if I use an oil wash or other oil weathering techniques, the oil and solvant themselves might not damage the acrylic layers, but the brushing and/or rubbing does create some damage. Also be careful of the varnish type. As mentioned, the same oil wash will leave less tinge on a gloss varnish than on a satin varnish.

Thanks for the video :) I have used winton for oil washes but found painting with them frustrating. This video convinced me to buy some artist M. Graham paint I can buy locally. WOW what a difference! The artist oil is smooth and silky and blends on the model so much easier! Using oils are actually fun now :)

I love oil paints. I literally use everything painting miniatures. I'm more on the historical side of things. And i will never go away from oils. And yes i use Vallejo acrylics for specific things

Thanks for this, Marco. I'm one of those guys who learned to paint with oils back in the early 80s. It wasn't until I was hired as a studio painter for Ral Partha that I learned to paint in acrylics (they wanted me to paint with their paints). I transitioned mostly to acrylics after, but your videos have got me hauling out my old oils again! A quick comment on drying time ... if you have a crock pot or slow cooker, you can turn it to its lowest setting ("Hold" or "Keep Warm") and put the freshly painted mini into it for a few hours to greatly speed up the drying time. Be careful with plastic figures. Usually they can handle the heat, but put them up on a small wooden plinth so they don't come into contact with the hot crockery surface.

Hi! Nice to meet you 😊 I love everything from Real Partha so I'm absolutely sure to have seen a lot of your works!!! Cool idea!!! A lot of the historical painters in my old paint club used a wooden box with aluminium foil on the walls a lightbulb inside; I absolutely need to try the crock pot/slow cooker solution!!! Thanks a million for the idea

Hard not to be a Ral Partha fan. Their minis set a very high bar back in the day! I did a number of boxed sets for them, including Dragonlance Villains, Silver and Steel sets 1 & 2, Ravenloft Denizens, Dr. Mordenheim's Labroratory, and Castle Forlorn, plus a lot of loose figures featured in their catalogs. If you squint you can see my name of the backs of the boxes and listed in the catalogs from the early to mid-90s. In those days painters weren't really celebrated like they are now. I believe I was the first US painter to ask for and receive credits on the box, and every painter after me benefited from that. As for drying the paint, I've seen those lightbulb boxes before, too, but had forgotten about them until you mentioned them. Probably more gentle than a crock pot, so safer for plastics I would imagine (though you can leave the lid off the crock pot to dissipate the heat somewhat). The nice thing about a crock pot, though, is you can make dinner in it after. Multi-tasking FTW! ;)

Ohhh.....I am in America and used white spirits to thin my oil paints to make rust streaks, etc. on models, plastic military models. I had taken a break from miniatures and acrylics and thought how useful using oils could be in blending and creating shadows, etc. in miniature painting. There are several famous painters who do that already (using a gloss varnish to have a smooth surface for the oil wash to flow into crevices' easier. Anyway, I thought turpentine and white spirits were the same and ended up using turpentine to clean up a little bit of my model where I had made a mistake with a thinned oil paint (thinned with white spirits)....well, that turpentine stripped ALL the paint and wrecked everything!! There is a difference between between white spirits and turpentine, I learned that hard lesson!

I already use oils for washes and dot filters, and enamels for some weathering effects, metallics, and anything that needs blending smoothly with a brush (I'm crap at blending acrylics) but I might just give oils another look after watching this!

My first experience with oil paints (I did use oil washes before) on the model was when working on the P-51 I thought that I can try to reproduce wood floor (which supposed to be pressed wood lousily painted over with some rubbery paint what was always robbed off by pilots' feet). In acrylics it was taking forever to make the wood like texture where oils were extremely easy. However during my first failed attempt I found out how easy oils to blend and (since I did not needed a perfect blend but feathered wood like lines so I had to start over) how easy it is to wipe out what you do not like and start over. Since then this is the only way I draw wood decks on the models (for example all those IJN aircraft carriers) as well as some tone transitions. Now I need to try to use oil paints using your tricks on the miniatures.

Marco, have you ever tried Alkid paints, quick drying oil paints. Winsor and newton makes them. They fully dry in 24h and use use the same linseed and mineral spirit like oil paint.
@elskanko1
@elskanko1 4 жыл бұрын
Griffin Alkyd is the paint range. In my humble experience of running a chain of art stores for 14 years and being a painter (not brilliant) they are not a popular range of paints as a general concensus. They fit within the student quality of paints because of their pigmentation levels and range of colours. Alkyd is a drying medium that some brands sell as a seperate medium (additive) for your oil paints. Daler Rowney does a flow alkyd medium that you can add to your oils as you wish. I know that Daler Rowney has gone through a lot of financial issues of late and isnt as widely distributed as it once was so may not be as easily found in your local store depending on location. Marco is demonstrating a technique very similar to glazing and because of the high white spirit - oil paint there is very little reason to add a further drying agent. Sure you can of course there is no "right way" just a few basic techniques to make oil painting easier. A very popular medium that is used by a lot of very fine detail oil painters is the Archival odourless classic medium. If anything the Griffin Alkyd is great for your initial base coats because of its speedy (for oils) drying time. But again generally speaking the thinner the oils the faster the drying time.

Hey, I just switched to Oils last month. Buy Old Holland Or schmicke mussini/Norma. Winsor Newton is not good enough. Add quick drying medium instead of buying the Alkid paints. Dmitry Fesechko has the premier video on oil painting miniatures. He does it in 3 steps. There will be some growing pains of course. It's not cheap, so be ready to make a commitment. You only need about 10 colors, Mineral sprints, and optional mediums palette and palette cups. I love it. I still use Acrylics, but in a lot of ways you can pull off ultra advanced techniques in minutes. You no longer have to spend an hour on putting down 7 glaze layers. Good Luck.

Some Questions: 1) What is that female archer mini, it looks awesome and I kinda wanna add something like that to my pile 2) How do oil paints and lacquers interact? 3) I was told from several people in the gunpla community, that panel lineing with oils/enamels makes plastic brittle and that you want to varnish it first, what are your experiences with plastic getting brittle with oils? 4) Is it possible (no matter if hard or easy) to just buy Red, Yellow, Blue and mix the tones I want/need? Would I need to get linseed oil to make longer mixing processes work better? Awesome video! I only skipped the last few bits when you worked on the mini, because I wanted the final information.
