In radio era, they called it "in it for the first 20 seconds to win it" i think, so that the audience doesn't change channel or switch song. Also the first half is more masculine and menacing so suit the image of the final boss more.

I was thinking about the whole "context" discussion the other week since it's something you bring up quite a lot in your videos, and I think the place I came to with it was: "Do you miss out on something listening to music without context? Yes.... Does that invalidate or even lessen your enjoyment of the piece? No." Because at the end of the day, we all miss out on a lot of things that others pick up on as we are all different unique individuals. The person who isn't a chef may not know what ingredients went into a dish and may not know if it is French or English cooking but they do know it's delicious. For me, I've studied Japanese for over a decade now so there are games (mostly from Japan obviously) where there are references or nuances in the Japanese language that get totally lost in translation and a part of me wants to shout out "IT'S BECAUSE OF ____!" when I see people talk about weird Japanese game trends... but that doesn't change the fact that the people playing without that knowledge still love the game and sometimes notice things I don't notice because they aren't distracted by the context... and to counter that there's plenty I miss because studying over a decade doesn't come close to the knowledge and experience you gain from growing up in that context. In the end, we all come from different paths with different levels of experience and knowledge that shapes our perspective of how we view the world (music included) and no two people will view the same thing exactly the same way.... but those differences and things we and others "miss out on" doesn't devalue our experience... in a sense it's part of what adds value to it. Much like how a recipe needs various ingredients working in unison towards a recipe, a piece of art needs multiple colours and textures working towards a great picture, and music needs multiple scales and notes to work towards a single piece, I think it's these variations between us and our experiences that truly adds beauty and purpose to our discussions about art. There is no "Right way" to experience art or "Optimal strategy" to get value out of it in my opinion =) Sorry for the long ramble. Keep up the great videos!

Always interesting to hear the perspectives from the other side of music. Two things id like to comment, first I wish game companies released versions of songs without loop, they would sound more complete to non player listeners. Second, finally someone gave Gravity Rush some love, both games have lovely songs.

When a song is emotionally jarring during an intense moment, it is not distracting, it is so intense that the awe pulls out some adrenaline and it often makes it easier to mentally focus on the experience. It simultaneously adds a sense of wonder, like "oh no, they have a melancholy theme song but are clearly an endgame boss, just what happened here?"

Normally I enjoy when they give insight with no visual context but I think it really would have given him a little more of an idea to the beauty of why Soulsborne music is the way it is. Perfect piece fitting of a finale. Great storytelling, I adore the implications of Miquella's story progressing and his emotions changing as the music plays. Like Miquella singing a gentle lullaby to heal the broken pieces of the world, turning into powerful and overwhelming order, then into a desperate plea. Not to mention the heroic, celebratory and regal style of Radahn's part. Fantastic piece.

Slow music in boss fights is usually associated with pain, regret, loss, failure, etc, and are usually heavily story driven. Like putting down a scared wounded rampaging animal, being forced to fight your best friend or family member, or being confronted with an angelic, graceful being who's motivations are pure but their methods are cruel and unjust. Because they're slow and emotional, they stand out more among the loud bombastic boss fights and stick with you longer (probably also because they're tied to intense story beats).

A more effective summation of Radhan the Promised Consort, is that you are introduced to a Demi-God of War, and then the ascension of a True God of love and Hope, and you oppose this duo, impossibly so.

The earlier conversation about context and lack thereof has got me thinking about something. The music of Final Fantasy 12 has a lot of thematic pieces tied to locales. When I first heard these many years ago they really made me feel like I was in these fantastical places. Hearing them standalone always takes me back to those places in the game. I would be very interested to hear what you make of them and how they'd make you feel given your lack of context. I think going through these tracks on some place like spotify would be best so you aren't spoiled by the visual element present on youtube. I'm sure there are games with locale music beyond ff12 that also grant this sort of feeling to other people, so it would be an interesting subject to explore more generally. Trying to derive the context from the musical piece itself via analysis of its motifs and effect of the progression and then seeing if what you guessed was close to what's present in-game. I think that would be really cool. You could even have guests partake if you find that sort of exercise fun after trying it out.

Especially "Brother" to me is incredibly beautiful. I think the first game had more impactful "dramatic" music, though. "Big Sister", "Grieving" very slow and dark, "The Inquisition" looming and threatening, "Beyond the Horizon" like you are expending your last bit of energy in a desperate struggle. Brother from the sequel is my overall favorite single piece, but as a whole I think the first soundtrack is more impactful and on a higher level on average, so to speak. I missed the "dark violin" as I call it in Requiem, it was largely replaced by choir and orchestra, which had less character and depth in my personal opinion.

I see that ''The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices'' or in French ''Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares'' has been mentioned. I'd like to add that the song from The Witcher 3 - ''Steel For Humans'' is in fact Bulgarian in origin, it is a song about Lazarus. So that gentleman has a good ear since The Witcher 3 composer uses Bulgarian motifs in some of the music for the game.

24:42 Amazing, he ripped the thoughts and imagery right out of my head. Because I was just listening to the music, my mind immediately conjured up Belle walking through that village. How the bloody hell did he know? Edit: I do wonder how Garth and Greg would have reacted to the Promised Consort if they had heard Starscourge Radahn before or after. Because I remember during the ranking of ER’s music that you re listened to both and decided that Starscourge Radahn was above The Promised Consort as a track. Would Garth and Greg have thought the same thing perhaps? 46:51 When I was in the boss fight myself for the first time, I will be genuinely honest. I barely noticed the start of the second phase. I was way too busy fearing for my life. Subsequent runs I could hear it, but didn’t think it out of place knowing exactly who I was fighting. It enhanced the atmosphere significantly in my opinion. Still below Starscourge Radahn in my opinion, but that was a completely different kettle of fish. 1:23:33 reminds me slightly of The Weight of the World with how he described that

Listening to their piece was a nice addition into the video. I went through enough classical music classes to get a minor degree, but even to this day I don't go out of my way to really listen to these performances. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy them, however. In context of relating to video game music, I could easily close my eyes and imagine a bustling street festival in your classic RPG with this playing in the background. Very fun movement.

@SolitasRuisu2 ай бұрын
I believe you get your music for these videos from youtube right? I would be a bit careful when choosing like this because often times the channels uploading the tracks don't properly inform you when they have edited long loops into the music, and can give the wrong impression when out of context. In particular Vendecentre, looking at the track in the official soundtrack on spotify, it's only really two minutes long, but I have the impression the track you've shown in the video was edited to be much longer. So it probably wasn't intended to be looping this many times when listening out of the game's context.

Interestingly enough the promised consort has a grab attack where he kindly embraces you it does no physical damage but it does put half of a crown on your head and if he does this twice you get on your knees and pledge yourself to him and it will say heart stolen which is a unique death animation...... And it just really fits that the solo child singer sounds quiet and kind as they embrace you.

Garth and Greg's piece reminded me of the uplifting and sometimes ethereal tracks used in older Monster Hunter games as story completion pieces and special village event songs. With or without the vocals, it would be a great fit! For song recommendations, (though not similar) I'd recommend pieces like Monster Hunter Tri credits theme or the Diva songs from 4. Dance of Flames / Flame Dance from God Eater Burst is also a piece with fantastic rhythm and melody!

I think something that needs to be added, when you present The Promised Consort, is how broken the world is. The lands between, and the lands of shadow by extension, are a broken world. They're a place of conflict, of struggle between great powers, of tragedy, of wonder, of horror, of greatness and of depravity. And the music reflects it, from the funeral march of Starscourge Radahn's theme, the cosmic wonder of Astel's, the ambition of Radagon's and then the nostalgia of Elden Beast's. The music is varied, but like the world it lives in, it does not have any true heroic figure (theme). And that's why, in my opinion, that Promised Consort's theme (especially the second half) is liked so much by those who played the game. Because for the first time, maybe for the entire soulsborne series, the music doesn't just tell a tale of conflict; but one of heroic triumph, of hope.
