To me, the first part feels like being onboard a massive fishing or merchant ship as a storm arrives. You don’t think it will be so bad, but you see the dark clouds on the horizon. The accordion hits as the first flash of lightning streaks across the sky- and the passengers realize just how bad it is. They try to secure cargo and prepare for turbulent tides… Then the hull crashed into jagged stone, and the phase shifts as the captain realizes: This ship is going down. The waves crash and toss the ship as water breaches the lower levels. Sailors sound the alarms and bang on the rails of the ladders warning the people below to get above deck and get on the life boats before they are sealed with the rushing waters below as they attempt to slow the rising water. At some point, the passengers realize with shear horror, they can’t save everyone, in fact, many have already been washed overboard and dragged beneath by the undercurrents. There is no sadism to this music. Sadism is a human trait. This is a shear force of uncaring nature. The music lulls as the perspective shifts to those who have already escaped, watching in numb horror the spectacle of destruction before them. How many of their friends have managed to escape? How many are gone forever? They know if they haven’t escaped yet, it’s too late. Then as it crescendos, we shift to the perspective of the ship itself, careening into the deep. It tilts up, flooding exponentially faster as the rush of water creates a whirlpool, dragging in all surrounding humanity that hasn’t escaped its reach. And then… quiet. As they rest forever more beneath uncaring sea.
@ventithedrunk9506 Жыл бұрын
Yeah i like how they properly textured it to tell "your not in urgency, he is." By making it not sound menacing, its faint and in the background. It's like even with all that power, and aura of complete menace, it tell you someone is secretly worried and hiding it. This why it's faint in the background and only noticable if you hear close enough. Just like Tartaglia, he may be cocky, but he has his own worries if you look hard enough.
@whistlegirl57262 жыл бұрын
A note on 1st phase: at that point Tartaglia doesn't quite take you seriously as an opponent just yet, so he keeps things fun and lighthearted - he doesn't hit quite as hard, his attacks aren't that hard to dodge. However, he still moves around the arena quickly and attacks a lot and just as quickly, so you have to chase after him, and dodge his attacks, and look for openings to strike back, all at the same time, so the whole resulting action looks less like a fight and more like a dance between you two.

Something interesting about that is that the tension and fear in the music is actually entirely representative of the protagonist's feelings. Tartaglia himself is delighted to have finally met a worthy adversary and revels in being able to let loose for once, and continues to value them and consider them a friend probably primarily if not solely because they're someone strong enough to help him continue improving himself.

Childe is definitely someone who will wink at you right before stabbing you - he's dangerous, but still young and the most charismatic part of his character for me is how he would do anything for his family. The dangerous part comes from him being a high-ranked soldier in his homeland, and his lust for battle. He will fight even if he knows there is a chance he will lose, because he only sees it as an opportunity to learn and improve, not as a failure. What I also love though, it's his honesty - he never tried pretending he is a friend who will help you from the kindness of his heart. No, actually, one of the first lines he says to you is ''I'm not a bad guy... Okay perhaps I'm kind of a bad guy, but I'm not here to give you any trouble.'' He dreams big, even says that he wants to 'conquer the world'. In one second, he is able to dare you to fight him to death, and in the next second, you might see him running around with his little brother. He comes from a place which was designed with Russia in mind - in one of his lines, Childe actually says ''Where I'm from, if we didn't keep moving, we'd freeze to death. Literally.'' His boss fight comes in 3 parts - in the first one, he treats it as a game, using mostly bow (which is his worst weapon, as he says ''I am the least adept with a bow.'') In the second part, he is starting to have more fun, but there is some seriousness in it, changing forms and weapons - now using mostly double swords/spear, his movement is faster and some of his special moves can kill your character with one strike if he hits you (I think any player can relate). His final form, he changes into his Abyssal form (one of the coolest scenes from the game in my opinion) and his moveset is a mix of the two previous parts. He used it after getting serious, even angry, after thinking he will have to defeat us to finish orders he was given. Hence the name 'Wrath of Monoceros Caeli'', which is the name of his constellation - 'Celestial Narwhal'. One of his moves is actually summoning and slamming a large narwhal made of water onto you, which I always thought was an awesome idea for a boss move. There might be some better themes in the game at this point, but I just love his character too much.

I like how the three phases represent three personas that Childe could be divided into. First phase is Childe, who fights for Snezhnaya but also loves battling itself. Second phase represents Tartaglia, The Eleventh Harbinger, who solely fights to accomplish the Fatui's goal. That's why there are Snezhnayan motives, but the whole feel gets more serious and cold. And the third persona, Ajax - A man who fell into the Abyss and wanted to fight to keep himself alive and constantly get stronger so he can protect his family. Hardly any Snezhnayan motives, only his own will and the Abyss.

The whale song in his last phase is a callback to his representative constellation which is a lone narwhal. Tartaglia is tainted by the abyss in game , so he’s condemned to loneliness because nobody else can understand the darkness/madness that is now irrevocably a part of him. Although his facade is really charming, his real self cannot make real connections any more because he’s no longer even fully human. The only thing that excites him now is the bloodlust in battle and climbing to the top of the food chain. He disregards everything else as trivial amusements.

In terms of raw power he's the most frightening of the Harbingers so far just because he mastered his Foul Legacy - an abyssal power - before he gained his vision, not only did he get blessed by the gods with a vision he was also given a delusion by the Tsaritsa. He seems down-to-earth in a way. But then, in the last phase of combat, he uses an ability (he transforms (again)) that is exceedinly reckless and forbidden, something you did not expect of him. The game uses different terminology, but the power he starts using in his final phase originates from a faction strictly opposed to the gods of the world. Secondly, those notes most definitely mimic the sounds of a whale song. There's no way this isn't intentional as Tartaglia's flashiest attack is arguably the one in which he summons a giant whale made out of water to splash down into the arena. Definitely the "some sort of like violent move where he comes up and slams on the ground or something" you were theorizing about.

I love that in one of the first phases of the fight he teases you with "all you do is run", while we dodge his fast attacks. And it's fitting that the first part is called "Never-Ending Performance", it's like a play or dance for Tartaglia to entertain himself. They say in his character story, that he loves to participate in plays and just loves attention. The last part of the fight is just his pure rage, when he thinks we, the player, pulled one over him and he unleashes a power that is to great to handle for him.

I like how you described him as demonic or possessed. In Genshin, a vision is what give characters the ability to use elements. It is given to them by gods. A delusion do the same thing, but saps away at your life force, basically the opposite of a vision, so if a vision is something “holy” then a delusion that Tartaglia use in his last phase would be considered “demonic”.

It brings me such UNBRIDLED joy to see you ABSOLUTELY spot on you are about his character. Also I love how you brought up the fact how they used accordion!! Tartaglia (or Childe) hails from a region in Teyvat called Shneznaya (directly translates to “snowy” in Russian) and it heavily relies on Slavic culture, and being a slav myself, accordions are a big part of our culture, and are seen as a more “goofy” instrument. It amazes me how spot on you are able to describe Childe’s character, seeing as you have never played the game before!! I would definitely suggest to listen to Qilin’s Prance (Ganyu’s character theme) and Rex Incognito (Zhongli’s character theme). They are songs that i definitely can listen to all day. Love your content and cant wait to see more!!

Im actually stunned at how well you read the character as he appears in the game. Good lord. Seductive, devious, playful with a sense of danger, charismatic, light on his feet, changing shape, going from a duel to a true fight, the demonic vibe, his twisted nature. You even got his story spot on as he's initially our friend. Incredible. I'm no musician but one thing I did notice was how his final form music sounds like a whale - an animal he's associated with. He even summons a magical whale in the battle. I always thought I was so clever for picking up that one but apparently I still have much to learn about how music communicates.

Great analasys! You pretty much nailed the character. Tartaglia, aswell as La Signora, are both part of the "11 harbingers" of the games antagonistic organisation called the Fatui. More of these harbingers also have names from the type of opera you talked about, such as Il Dottore, Il Capitano and Pantalone. Since Signora and Tartaglia are both part of the fatui they also share a certain melody in both their themes, which was played in the beginning with the accordion in this one!

Just FYI, the burst and skill generally don't have a lot to do with the characters in-lore power level. Lisa, a 4 star, is supposed to be incredibly gifted with her electro arts and terrifying when she gets mad, supposedly the very air around her electrifies. Ninguang also is an incredibly gifted Geomancer, we get to see some of her true strength in the Liyue questline against Osial. Tarty's playable kit doesn't reflect his true power, what we fought in the boss fight was first his vision, then his delusion and finally his foul legacy, the last two considerably increase his power by multiples at the cost of his life force and humanity respectively.

It's so refreshing to see a singer get SO much of the characterization from the orchestration! Us vocalists always get some flack for not having the best ears lol, but I think singers can innately pick up the emotions behind music pretty quickly. And your comment about Childe's playful machismo is spot on -- from the moment the main character meets him, that's exactly how he behaves until he's really challenged. Side note: if you got any Russian chorus vibes, it's intentional; Childe is part of the Fatui, an organization from Genshin Impact's iteration of Russia, Snezhnaya.
@saturn4462 жыл бұрын
You seriously nailed Tartaglia's character. In the first two phases he doesn't take you so seriously; he's confident he'll win the fight. He's playful and teases you. He is harder to dodge in the second phase but it's only in the 3rd phase where you really feel that things get serious; he's finally unleashed his full power and you're fighting him at his best while in the story, your character has already been battered from the first two phases. The fact that you're able to glean so much about his character from the themes shows both how knowledgeable you are and how amazing the composer is.

Excellent exposure to the deeper language of music as always! And of course, a nice demonstration as to why learning about music and theater can give us a far greater window into the media we consume today. If you go into his visual design, you'll want both in-universe context and anime visual design context. The former is perhaps too lengthy to go into, but the latter is used relatively simply here, the most important component being the usage of a scarf to denote a classic Japanese superhero-style protagonist. This is the outward appearance that he uses for his younger siblings, who he as a concept feels a strong justice to be a role model for. Hence, the Madrigal quartet is quite possibly a straight play on holy justice, at least within his heart; he does evil, especially that opposed to the heavens, but it is a relative good to his family and people, and thus he pulls his blade on you. A solemn admittance to the manner the world of Genshin Impact is inverted (at least as far as my current interpretation goes). In the end, Tartaglia wants you to delight in the fight itself, and to the thrill of combat. And so his song returns to whimsy at the end. The devs really know their themes - I could perhaps even describe this game as a meandering symphonic poem. There is a lot for you to delve into if you start to look at the soundtrack as a whole. Be warned - it is hours upon hours of listening!

If you ever get the chance to get and play as Tartaglia imo he's one of the most fun units to play. And it matches pretty spot on with your descriptions of him in both character and playstyle. I love analysis videos for game music, and one thing about Genshin music that gives props to the composer is that you got the characterization and even what is happening during the battle pretty much spot on. The last 'phase' of the song where you described as 'demonic' is basically Tartaglia tapping into the 'dark side' of power and powering up to face off the MC with their true power. You got that spot on! The initial part where you mentioned the character being 'light on their feet' speaks to the fact that Tartaglia is supposed to be good at many different types of weaponry and fighting and changes weapon types during the fight itself (as well as a playable character).

Oh my another amazing reaction and breakdown! You really got Tartaglia's personality down as well, a child who fell into the abyss and fought tooth and nail to get out only to come out with a bloodlust for battle, to the point of being called "The Tsarista's war dog". He is destruction hidden behind a sly smile and this piece reflects it beautifully! It is true he was playing around more in the first score, only using his own power (his vision, a gift from Celestia/the heavens) and even offering to be gentle should we surrender. the second section is when the fight gets serious. He starts to use his delusion, a gift given to him by his archon, and there is no more playing. This is also reflected in the piece gaining the almost holy sound as he is using his Archon and Queen's gifted power. The third section is when he releases his power gained from the Abyss, turning into a towering beast of a person. The abyss is known as a place where monsters are birthed and nightmares created and it reflects in the last section and his design very well. I may not fight him much but hes got a very interesting theme that I enjoy listening to!
