I'm a composer and orchestrator, and I'll be honest: I hardly ever include the trumpet in my music, even for orchestral works. Most of its comfortable range is also fairly doable on the horn, and I prefer the mellower sound of the horn generally, so the trumpet usually seems kind of vestigial in my mind, except as an alternate tone color. These covers are softening that view. Bravo.

The trumpet is very nice in context for its bright sound, especially in a piece like this, but the trumpet, when taken from the wrong approach, by the player, can become overpowering and poor in tone, which just kinda sux sometimes.

Something that helped me is working on low longtones. it's fast air and embouchure control. pick the lowest note you can play, and hold it for as long as you can. go a half step up, repeat. then start trying to transition between the low notes using a single breath and keeping them as connected as possible. then start doing single breath lip slurs. its all about the control

It quite high dude. Normally people plays until “high” G and A. Well, professionals doesn’t have a hard time hitting high C and D with softer volume(not blast). Much respect!!
@trenchiano4 жыл бұрын
Horns having decent tone and intonation on a high c is the equivalent of a flute section tuning to high f while running
@Brian-ey4xt4 жыл бұрын
Caitlyn, that C is high but not terrible for a professional player (in case you ever write/arrange anything for horn). It would probably be considered high for most hornists at a pre-university level. Most of the standard solo literature regularly goes up to the Bb a half step below that (the Mozart Concerti come to mind, as well as stuff like Strauss, Glazunov, etc...). The big horn solo from Wagner's Siegfried ends on that C, for example, so it's very much expected that professional hornists can play in that register with confidence and reliability. There's a lot of modern orchestral lit where the 1st horn is going up to the Eb or E above that (Symphonia Domestica by Strauss is one example). There are a few pieces that go even higher, but they are few and far between. Horn has a pretty wide range overall ~4 full octaves for professional players, so we need to read both treble and bass clef.

Yeah.... High Bb is basically the end of my range as a horn player

I highly recommend these works to others. Marc has great ways of arranging to keep the hard, just a bit less so to read, while keeping the pieces at the cinematic level. Sad you left out the horn solo to the high C at the beginning of your transcription. It's what made my son fall in love with the piece. It's no big deal, he has those 8 bars memorized, lol. A nice cut of the chariot race BTW. My daughter plays trumpet (9yr old) and son horn (11 yr old). They love your work! Thanks for keeping them challenged. My oldest plays Euphonium (17yr old) and played both the trumpet and horn parts (whichever has lead) on a chariot from your sheet music, which got the younger kids interested.
