I could not have watched this video at a better time, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Just an enthusiastic amateur at the moment, on furlough, but have been wanting to take a chance and start a long term reportage/documentary project(s). Now, after watching this video by Daniel, I feel inspired to do so. Just simple, every day, no nonsense advice from a talented guy, just priceless. Oh, and a good reason to watch "Under Fire" and "Salvador"!!! Many, many thanks...

I am big fan of getting prints, not a photographer, can't afford a camera for now so I do with whatever I can using Smartphone, before that I had very basic Point & Shoot. In my graphics and web designing days my portfolio was in form of a magazine. I still have one next to me. Printed and bind at home. When everyone started using Laptops and Tablets to show off their Portfolio, I formed a printed book of web designs. My partners and everyone else laughed good at that act. We secured over 70 projects within 2 months in times when not one company was getting their websites done. And yes in days when everyone using papers, I was using CD and USBs too. And these are great gifts. I was a part of social group, we used to go to hospitals and shelter homes, I took pictures and videos of friends. Then the lead person who started all of that had a birthday and I printed a book of those pictures to her.

Watched from start to finish, playlisted it, and will definitely refer back to it over the course of my third project, which will definitely NOT be rushed. I'm giving myself a deadline of summer 2023, rather than the 12 months I gave for my first two projects, which were fun, but in retrospect too rushed. And the fact that I won't now join Instagram should save me some aggravation too, so thanks for that advice as well.

Thanks for depriving yourself of sleep so we could watch and learn (be enterTRAINED?!) with some well considered tips and non-sugar coated advice. The giving of prints - as mentioned - is absolutely paramount. I was in Sicily in 2018 in a very small town called Randazzo (not too far from Catania). Down a tiny side street, I came across two women during siesta. I mumbled my way through some very basic and butchered Italian to introduce myself and ask permission to take their portraits. They were neighbours and had been best friends for 142 years or something like that. Their English was worse than my Italian but hand and facial gestures speak many languages and I took two frames. When I got home to Australia I saw the image of these woman clearly showed their address. I mailed them two 5 x 7 prints (a copy for each of the women). Three months later, I received a hand written letter from the son of one of the women to say my letter and print had arrived and was proudly on display on the table in their hallway at home. He apologised for the delay in writing to me but wanted to emphasise how pleased and chuffed his mother was to receive my photograph of them. A long winded explanation why I make pictures but I write it to emphasise your point(s) and to applaud people like you for keeping it real. Cheers, David.

As always, very wise words. Agree 100%, particularly with your feelings about instagram. I was not even thinking about doing any long term project but with these two videos I am really excited about some ideas that came to my mind. It has been critical to realize about something as simple as the fact that "I'm not in a rush no one cares". Liberating. I've got a question that maybe you would like to answer. What happens, from a legal point of view, when you photograph people in a project that you wants to publish/share? Should you ask for publication permission? That would be a great hurdle in people-involved projects. Again many thanks for these videos that are awesome!

Hi Daniel, I really appreciate the time you have spent on educating me/us on the essence of photography. Your views make a lot of sense and have changed the way I see and use my camera. While I've owned a camera for as long as I can remember, your inspiration has given more purpose and direction to my hobby. Unfortunately, my question is a technical one here. I've heard you mention many times that all you take is a 35mm and 50mm into the field. For me, shooting mostly digital with an APS-C sensor this would equate to 55mm and 80mm focal length due to the 1.6x scaling factor. If you are talking about your Fuji X-T2 is this the same for you or do you reduce to 22mm and 35mm lenses which would scale up to 35mm, 50mm on an APS-C sensor? Again, sorry for the technical gear question, I know you must be crying inside as you read this. If it is any consolation I have started my first test book and am looking forward to sending it in for printing.
