Al Davis knew well the wear and tear that RB's experience playing in the NFL. If you don't think that Al knew every aspect of having Marcus Allen on the roster then you don't know Al Davis. I'm talking Al in his prime. Not the ancient Sith lord he became. Everybody wants to criticize Al today but he genuinely cared about his players more than any other coach in the NFL. Until he looked away from Oakland. At that point the Raiders lost their mojo. They haven't got it back since. Money changes everything...

That was one of the best episodes of A Football Life.. if you ever played the game on an organized level, Marcus summed up in a nutshell, and in one sentence when he said the biggest reason that he was great was because he understood what everybody was doing at any one time on the field, because he had played fullback defensive backfield and quarterback after that if you have the physical skills running back will only come natural to you. The vision that's needed would be automatic. One of the top 20 goats.

I remember when Marcus ran in a TD for the Chiefs in LA and there was a banner with Al's portrait and 'Commitment to Excellence' hanging on the wall. Marcus ran over to it and spiked the ball right off of Al's face. I don't blame him one bit because while Al benched him his stats could have become legendary. I was SO excited whenever my Chiefs took Allen-and coupled with Montana it was great with our vaunted defense. I still remember my Dad yelling "GO MARCUS!!!" every time he touched the ball. (Alas, the 'Indian burial ground Arrowhead Stadium was built on' always bit us hard-even harder with poor Marty.) He never showboated-even after a TD he'd simply throw the ball to a referee and quietly go to the sideline always looking up at the clock/scoreboard. So intelligent, articulate, and a class act any parent would want their kids looking up to.

I've been a Oakland Raiders fan since 1979. And AL Davis did foolish things like his vendetta against Marcus. Look at what happen to them after the early 90's. Losing more way more than they were winning. Wasting millions of dollars on mediocre players. Signing a 1st round qb and giving millions because he had a cannon for an arm. But nothing else to show for. He flamed out before he caught fire. Or wasting more money on players that had a history of knee injuries. The list goes on and on. A team that would find ways to win. For years now it's been finding a way to lose. I hope w/Gruden the Raiders get back to finding ways to win.

Marcus Allen is one of my favorite raider heroes and I love what al Davis ment to his team but he was pretty for doing Marcus Allen like that he would've had every rushing record if Terrell Davis got in the hof after 6 or 7 seasons just imagine what Allen would've done in those 6 seasons he was benched still a class act
