Finally got to hear Marcus Miller play live after 40+ yrs of hoping to. Surprised I didn’t knock that off my list way back when I saw Miles Davis in 1984 or David Sanborn later that decade since Marcus seemed to be attached to both their hips (or vice versa) around then…nor at any of the 20+ NAMM shows I worked back in the day with all the musical luminaries I’d catch at that convention. As a bassist, song writer or producer you’ve also heard his work with the likes of; Aretha, Luther, Quincy, Withers, Chaka, Roberta, Elton, Ferry as well as far too many jazz/fusion LPs to list on top of his session work for so many R&B/Soul/Pop artists on major label releases.
Cool bonus for this set (Marcus played 4 nights in a row with 2 separate shows each night at Yoshi’s this weekend) was special guest Larry Braggs sitting in for a few songs (so not sure if he also sang other sets/nights). Larry is an Oakland native who was the lead singer for Tower Of Power for 14 years, before leaving to join legends The Temptations for another 6 years.
