There's quite a lot that appears outdated here (now, with 1.2 update (perhaps): * Convert-O-trons receive engineer multiplier bonus (like drills), and scale up energy usage accordingly (with 100% somewhere between 4 and 5 stars, oddly, at perfect thermal efficiency). * The separate Liquid Fuel and Oxidizer modes can (and so should) be run simultaneously with the "Lf+Ox" mode, for additional output. (Thought this was odd, but the Dev on the forum said it's intended and always been there.) * Engineer also improves thermal management (helping drills/converters settle on their perfect temperature), it seemed (I've not quantified this yet). * Your ratio of drills to converts seems like it would be a bit extreme now... Although I'm very unsure about that... I know you have only 2% ore concentration at your KSC, while I have 10%, which is a factor of 5 more drills needed. (I'd not realised they randomise the distributions such, and I got lucky.) It's a couple weeks ago I was experimenting and got a bit muddled between all the numbers and rates and how they vary and display, especially with the misleading in-game tool-tip info and the Wiki pages that are outright wrong... Anyway, nice video(s). I kinda wish I'd seen this before struggling with my own time-consuming launchpad tests (which looked a lot like your build, heh). Nicely condensed and presented information, with a bit of fun/explosions thrown in. Good effort with editing, etc. :-)

Thanks mate. All this is an interesting read and I'd need to play again. It was as you say 1.1.3 vs the current. That being said, I see nothing in the wiki about engineers increasing performance of the convert-o-tron units, only the drills as shown here. wiki.kerbalspaceprogram.com/wiki/Engineer If what you say is true here with bonus's for heat / conversion time, that's awesome (I hadn't seen such a thing). In general though, the drills are a massive bottleneck and the convert-o-tron tends to sit there not doing much. Agree that the separate LqFuel/Ox is odd and .. yea.. why. I tend to find the fuel type selection quite buggy. Sometimes LqFuel/Ox will only refill until one of the two is filled, then it stops both of them.. All very odd.
@ZeroGravitas8 жыл бұрын
For reference, here's the forum thread where I recently asked about this, and prompted RoverDude (who coded it) to explain a bit: forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/154845-convert-o-tron-isru-modes-produce-in-parallel-for-increased-output-intended/ Also, thanks for replying; looks like you're putting good effort into communicating with your viewers. :-)

Now this was a very interesting read. I didn't realise I was talking to the ISRU guru here. They certainly should update that wiki page otherwise no one (including myself) would know that without experimentation. Certainly does seem a very recent change so hopefully they'll update that soon. I now also better understand the reason for the separate LF/Ox as well. all very interesting. Thanks for the posts. Hopefulyl people find this little thread interesting. Will stick it.
@ZeroGravitas8 жыл бұрын
But experimentation is what this game is all about! :-p ;-) Seriously no expert, literally just done a bit of launchpad testing, and they haven't been called IRSUs since before I started playing (such a newb)... I was kinda surprised that the Wiki seems so neglected currently, with so many smart, technical players. But seems like a lot of interest left after the devs called it complete and the Wiki itself has apparently been labelled as having "migration issues" for years, so I hear: www.reddit.com/r/KerbalSpaceProgram/comments/5njh0k/is_there_a_heroic_kerbalnaut_who_will_update_the/

One thing to remember, when you have the tech, a large fuel cell array is much better than multiple XL power panels, for power generation. For one, they take less space and can be hidden in a cargo bay, to not mess up the aesthetics of your craft. Two, since your power comes from fuel, you can keep mining and refining during the night, cutting your refueling time in half. And due to that, you don't need so many batteries, which will save on weight. However this doesn't mean you should eliminate solar panels entirely. I always calculate power required by normal ship operation, like command, reaction wheels etc and add it in solar panel form, then add the exact power requirement to operate the drills and refinery, in fuel cell form.

I managed to get a "Big-Ass Refueling Truck" to the Mun and it worked well (demo video coming later on my channel). After watching this video, I was inspired to make a Mk. II starting from scratch. While I took some features of House's design (the Mk. 3 fuselage, batteries and converter in the cargo area, radiators and drills and panels everywhere), I added some modifications to the truck - like having the ore tanks in the cargo, for instance. I may not have as much energy capacity as this one (House's ~80,000 > My 36,035), but at least mine can keep running for a long period of time (radioisotope generators, ceiling panels that do not extend). Aside from that, here are some more useful tidbits of information: BIG-ASS REFUELING TRUCK MK. II SPECS (just the rover itself - no attached rocket boosters) * {2 x (15G Relays)} and {1 x (100G Direct)} * 6 x (Large RoveMax Wheels) * 5,005 Oxidizer capacity * 4,095 Liquid Fuel capacity * 3,000 Ore capacity * 2,110 Monopropellant capacity - if all systems are working operationally (at once), the Mk. II can have ALL its tanks full in less than 9 days (tested at airfield) I just need to make a transport rocket with enough Delta-V for the Mk. II (Mk. I already works, as you'll see later) to get to the Mun - Minmus requires less Delta-V. Thanks again for inspiring me, Marcus House.

@wkfYT8 жыл бұрын
Marcus House That's true about the gravity, however the inclination is a little bit annoying.

True. Picking the correct launch window helps there as you can usually get the relative inclination right down in ascent. In the vid I got it down to a little over half a degree.

Thanks for the docking tutorial too!

Thanks Tyler. No mods here. The Move tool is just a tool mode in the VAB/SPH that lets you move the parts up and down in interesting ways. There is also a rotate tool that lets you rotate.

Normally I'd recommend having a main NERV based space station that has one or more descent/ascent modules attached. This way you can descend with the small lightweight vessel, then refuel back at the space station. Try creating the smallest vessel possible for the descent and ascent, then incorporate the space station after that. Might do an episode on just this thing soon actually. Sort of imagine a lightweight apollo style eagle lander that comes back up to dock.

Hey Marcus, thanks for the awesome video! Any reason why my replica of your refueled can't turn. Built it exactly like you did and didn't mess with any of the large rover wheel properties. It refuses to turn (even a little bit) so I messed with the properties of the wheels and still no luck. Hoping large rover wheels get some more love in the future. Any guidance or tips would be well appreciated. Thanks and am looking forwards to more videos!
@MarcusHouse8 жыл бұрын
The large rover wheels kind of suck. You can't accelerate and turn at the same time which is painful. Keep in mind that my videos presenting this are in many cases quick highly sped up. So it may look like I'm, turning much faster than I am. Believe me though, it is indeed very slow to turn. I wouldn't have used the wheels at all if there were other alternatives that will support the weight.

I need some advice. So first thing: what's the best way to level up an engineer fast? Secondly: Isn't the converter a big bottleneck in this design? should i go for more converters and/or less drills instead? I'm planning on making a mobile science collector for minmus that uses flight instead of wheels, to visit all biomes. I know I could do it with a fixed fuel amount, but It would be fun to try it with a small fuel tank and refueling system.

A neat concept, you might want to add the m-700? short range scanner as well, as it shows a map with density of the ore in a 1 km radius around your vessel, extremely useful in tracking high concentrations of ore. Also solar panels are actually quite inefficient, space wise, much better to fill your cargo bay with large fuel cells. Number of drills might be quite high, that's enough drills there to feed 2 refineries. Here's a similar vessel I built a while ago: Mk2 version: image.prntscr.com/image/9e212f5fb7604759820f7c1a993d8009.png Mk3 version with refueling truck: image.prntscr.com/image/ff6818e8208d49fd981ed7fa3d7db055.png

So, if I put a mine on the mun. How much battery should I bring for 4 drills and 2 ISRU to work at the 'night' there?
@Zamolxes778 жыл бұрын
2 Isru with 4 drills is a bad combo, one ISRU will be completely out of ore while the 2nd one will barely be half way full. 10 drills can support 1 isru easily. If you want to use 2 isru, you need 20 drills. Instead of solar panels, use large fuel cells, that way you don't have to carry a billion batteries with you. You will need a small battery and a pair of small solar panels, for insurance.

Why not instead of 2 empty cargo bays use an empty fuel tank? Refuel while not in use so you have that much fuel when you connect to a lander, making it quicker? Of course I could test this myself, I'm sure you have your reasons. Great idea though, I should do something like this. I should also learn how to re-enter and land near ksp

Thanks for the question. In this design I wanted it to contain and hide away the Convert-o-tron and batteries. You can certainly fill that empty space with tanks and do exactly what you are saying. I really just wanted to build a fast refueler that could drive around. If you loaded it with fuel driving around would be much more difficult I imagine.

Built what you built, empty wt. 64.7t, cost 324,448, top speed 11.5m/s (I'm running 1.2 pre-release). Replacing the 2 empty center cargo spaces and putting in Mk3 fuel sections (same size as cargo spaces, empty wt. 65.8t, cost 326,858) when full on fuel I got 11.0 to 11.1m/s. I'm sure more testing is needed but so far so good. You did a great job building, it's very sturdy. I just was curious about filling faster than 24 days or whatever it was lol

This is a nice option. From memory (and I was running in 1.1.3) the wheels kept busting when I had it with fuel tanks. I think the wheels in 1.2 are loads better so this would be a nice option.
@Remaggib8 жыл бұрын
That would make sense, the wheels in 1.1.3 are garbage lol

i got an idea to have a moon base where i produce fuel and then i launch it up to vehicles in orbit, this would extend their range... sort of similar to NASA's lunar gateway

Could someone perhaps launch a vehicle will little fuel use a drill to mine ore and refuel it and then recover it for a profit?

I don't see the need for a "refueler", if you want to print money, just create a hugh "vehicle" with lots of ore in it (you can load the ore in the editor), lots of empty monoprop tanks and convert it to monopropolant. Can print money like this easily. You don't need any propulsion for that vehicle, just have it stand there on the runway for a few days, bam 500k money. That said, money shouldn't be an issue on that stage anyway.

Having a refuelling base on the Moon would be fantastic I believe. You can send a much larger payload to the Moon and to Mars if you can fully refuel and relaunch from the Moon. It would be a great thing to try in Realism Overhaul.

Marcus House But is it possible? Is it possible to convert ore into fuel without remains of ancient life? (Fossil Fuels I Mean)
@MarcusHouse8 жыл бұрын
Yes... there have been a lot of proposals. One is to mine water from the Moons poles and turn it into liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. This is a reasonable explanation however there are many more resources if you Google around. www.inverse.com/article/7062-does-the-quickest-route-to-mars-include-refuelling-on-the-moon

"So we're going to add the large convert-o-tron..." HOW DID YOU GET IT TO JUST ATTACH LIKE THAT?! In my game it will not attach anywhere except out the side at a wonky angle, as though it just fell out of a tree. I've been fiddling with the stupid thing for 15 minutes. EDIT: Finally made it happen. There is exactly one camera angle, and at that point exactly one pixel where the mouse can be put, where the convert-o-tron will attach. Wth!

Too bad that only works on easy difficulty since you can’t fuel crossfeed with a clamp o tron.

This is an earlier version of the game. You now need to use docking ports.
