Well my friends we have got so much to dive into today around all things space. Starship’s Next Move Is Coming Sooner Than You Think. Not only are we already seeing FCC hints for Flight 8 by Feb 24th, we are also seeing rapid Pad B work with Chopsticks Installed, and associated work screaming along. I tend to start off the week thinking it may be a little bit slower, but of course, as I try to wrap things up there is so much more breaking to dive into. Indeed, it has been a gigantic week, and I’ve got it all packaged up nicely for you so as you settle into the weekend. Lets not forget Boom just flew the XB-1 First Supersonic Flight, the huge work being done by Vast / Haven-Demo / Haven-1, Spacewalk 92 with Butch and Suni, Intuitive Mission IM-2 & Firefly Blue Ghost updates, and Falcon 9 action with SpainSat NG I Mission, and Starlink Group 12-7.

So @ 21:44 we get the shot from Blue Ghost passing by Earth and giving us that BEAUTIFUL fly-by video... but there is something in that clip that is confusing me a bit... Above the Earth, travelling down and then behind it we see a small grey dot illuminated by the Sun, and I am assuming that is the Moon.. right? Well that's the problem... it'd so small!!! Is that really the moon?! I just didn't expect it to look that small I actually zoomed in on it with an app I have for windows, AND I slowed down the video speed to only 25% and if you look closely it KINDA looks like it changing shape! t looks almost as if it is being squished around a bit, but I know that this is most likely the video compression... WHAT A CRAZY VIEW OF THE MOON!!! If that ISN'T our moon then what could it be??? I'm at a total loss if it isn't!!

Hey, just a fyi, I'm not sure if it has been commented on, but that utilities trench has a 'detour' some way along the trench. If you're not aware, the reason for that is that as the liquids travel through the pipes, they move the pipes. If you have pipes connecting A and B, and they are in a straight line, the forces holding in the pipe at the ends can get astronomic. It's crack or crush anything. So what you do is put four bends in, and allow the pipe to expand and contract. The material stretches, but it's only minor lateral movement by changing an angle from 90 degrees to 89. That's how they manage the forces of the pipe in the trench without requiring 1000x (not exaggerating) more concrete. In water it is really important, because water is heavy. When you pump that at speed, and you don't manage its forces, it will crush anything. Anyhowz... great video again. Love your work.

since you seem to be familiar with the topic: is there any specific reason why they go back to the original line the Pipe was in rather than just having two 90deg turns and alternating them left-side, right-side. to clarify what i mean: currently: ### ############ ############ # # # # # ### ### ## what i think could be better: ### ############ # # # ############ ######## and afaik this is not for the movement of liquids in there, but rather to account for thermal expansion (or in this case better contraction, since the fluids in there are cryogenic)

@@unitrader403 math and cost. The site work and concrete work would cost more but the performance of the expansion loops wouldnt be any better, possibly worse, I don't know the math. Building in a straight line is cheapest. The loops are sized to be as small as possible while still being effective to minimize cost of construction. The less deviation from a straight line there is, the easier and cheaper it is to build

My favourite call is from the Currawong. Because it reminds of waking up in Maffra - Gippsland region, Victoria at my pops place. My second and third favourites are the Bell bird call and the Lyrebird because of all the cool sounds it can mimic. Other cool birds are our birds of Prey like the Wedgetailed Eagle and our various coastal hawks & kestrals. Also are our extraordinary billabong/wetlands birds especially those of the farm north in the Kakadu National Park, like the Jabiru.

I came from NZ to do a course at a remote location in the Dandenong Ranges East of Melbourne. I was amazed at the size of a Kookabura on the porch in the morning, tapping it's beak on the ranchslider window of the kitchen, wanting some scraps to eat. Made our New Zealand Kea look like a sparrow. As a kid on my Uncles farm, the Skylarks were fascinating. Like they were announcing the daily news, compressed into 30 seconds. It is good but there is a long, long, long way to go before they have a commercial product. It is not a big technological achievement to make a small supersonic plane using off-the-shelf engines, especially as being a prototype you do not have to care about production efficiency, fuel efficiency, noise, durability, reliability or compatibility with airport infrastructure. I would not put my own money into Boom shares.

Marcus, following your family back to England must be a massive issue in Australia! Every time I run into young people, I have to educate them on the most common name in Northern Ireland. They jump to the conclusion that I am English, when my family is from Antrim, Ireland. The problem with tracing families back is when families changed their names to blend in. The DNA test allowed my family to learn their history, which was lost 300 years ago. The neat part of family history is when you find family members in Australia, USA, and Ireland!

A great update on Vast, thanks. I was really surprised to see the sketch of the Vast module mounted in a fairing. Wouldn't a simple disposable nose cap be sufficient during launch leaving the remainder of the module to handle the loads, as originally envisioned with Dreamchaser crew variant.

I'm confused? It's the fairing on top of a rocket. All payloads going to space are enclosed in a fairing. They have to be, or the dynamic forces will just rip them to pieces. And the control of the rocket would be very difficult as well. A nose cap would put all the force of the rocket directly onto the Vast Module. The Fairings distribute the forces along the outer skin of the rocket. I seriously don't think the Vast Module would last very long otherwise. The Vast Module is not a rocket, it's an habitat.

@David-yo5ws but Dreamchaser crew doesn't sit in the fairing and when you look at how flimsy the fairing is, it's hard to imagine the payload itself couldn't be designed to avoid damage from aero forces.

@ But the Dreamchaser is a designed vehicle for re-entry so is constructed differently than a VAST module, designed only as an habitat in orbit. Two completely different vessels. As for the Fairings, at US$3million for each half, they are much stronger than you give them credit for.

The reason most crewed vehicles, like crew Dragon, Starliner, and the crewed Dreamchaser, aren't launched inside a fairing is because they are designed with launch abort capabilities and existing fairings are not. Since the space station segment will launch without crew on board there is no need for a LAS and the the spacecraft can be encapsulated in a standard fairing.

For reference Spaceship 1 & 2 are both supersonic and civil built but tbf they are rocket planes and not designed with civil airliners of the future in mind. Great video Marcus!

Love your videos for many years, the ideal mix and very informative about what’s going on in space! This is probably pedantic, Marcus, but it was a thing for me when I was young, and a very common misconception. So I thought I’d share. There’s no real thing called the sound barrier. That term was coined when we were trying to have manned supersonic flight, and they encountered physical problems with going that fast, as well as some of the math returns as limits (that is, the solution of an equation goes to infinite negative or positive values when the variable(s) approach(es) some value) when the variables approached the speed of sound. It is equivalent, more or less, to how we look at the speed of light now. We would call the speed of light a speed barrier: the Light Barrier, perhaps. They did so with the speed of sound then. Really, there’s only supersonic, transonic, or subsonic flight. Transonic means that the speed of the airflow over the vehicle has some subsonic parts and some supersonic parts. Shockwaves are being continually formed whenever there is any supersonic flow. It’s like wakes from a boat. If the boat is going over a certain speed, it always produces a wake. It’s just that, we experience the shockwave “wake” as an abrupt explosive sound instead of as a slow moving wave that we watch as it comes ashore. The sound is not, as I once thought for a really long time, from the plane (or rocket in this case) “breaking through” the sound barrier, as if the plane was a bulldozer pushing through a brick wall. It is simply how we experience the shockwave wake that it is constantly creating. If you got this far, thanks for indulging me.

I have read comments like yours almost 5 times in the comments section now. My point of view to each one is the same. If you are going to look at Elon like that, then maybe you should look at the business world of other manufacturers. You may end up buying far less products, because Elon's just a newbie when it comes to some draconian men and women in other companies. How much of your precious time, do you want to invest into research in to every product that you buy, just in case the manufacturer is a child slave driver or immigrant exploiter or religious group that exploits not paying tax and those that steal other peoples patents? That's just off the top of my head. Your 'morality' may be an honest attempt, but the reality of the world just makes it look a bit weak. Still, in life we have a choice. Well, almost. Thanks! Glad someone pointed that out. It was actually bigger, faster and came before Concorde but that’s cause the KGB stole the plans lol. Also the intakes are so much longer because they didn’t have the engine or intake tech and to maintain supersonic they had to continuously run the engines with burners on. It was so loud the only way to communicate were paper notes.

Is there any info if launching modules for Vast will use the larger fairings SpaceX has been teasing? Would allow them to get larger modules which are apparently pretty light up there. Thanks!

Not sure what you're on about Marcus with the comment "it fired off that landing burn under forty metres away from the target". 40 meters is 267 bananas, and the booster was heaps more than that when it relit its candles brah.

Question about the payload bay... Once they open the pez dispenser, deploy, then close the door, how do they repressurize for reentry?

@MarcusHouse, the FCC license application is for a 6 month window and i recall hearing it is not a great indicator of a launch date. Any idea if prior FCC license requests lined up with the IFT'S?

Marcus, thanks for a great show, in the interest of accuracy I have two comments. 1- you report that the booster fired off the landing burn less than 40 metres from the target and if you freeze at 1:37 it's clearly visible the the engines are ignited with the booster in the low hundreds of metres away, using 70 metres of the booster for scale. 2. The condensation cones you mentioned ( shock waves ) do not coincide and are not related to breaking the sound barrier ( you can check it out) so editing the soundtrack to coincide with them is erroneous. Otherwise I love your show.

The target is a point in the sky above the tower. Not the tower itself. SpaceX posted this on their X. It was less than 40 meters on the targeted burn location.
