This is a staple in EVERY Hispanic home. When I cook them in my house the smell can literally bring me back to walking in to my mom's house, grandma's house, or an aunts house. ❤ Sometimes my husband is happy just to have beans, cheese, and tortilla for dinner

When we used to soak beans overnight we always used to add about a teaspoon or so of baking soda. That would help release some of the gas in the seeds making them just a bit more "burp-less" when you make food later from them.

They look delicious. I grew up in a large family with 12 siblings. Needless to say, we had beans almost every day in one form or another. After I was a man I discovered Great Northern Beans. I like them even better, Later in life I learned to cook them in the slow cooker. I think that is the best way to cook them with fat back and corn bread and fried potatoes. Thumbs up to your videos.

I have learned to make a simple pot and divide it into canning jars while hot still. I do add a small amount of sea salt to help preserve it. I allow them to cool on the counter. The jars will seal themselves this way. Once at room temperature, I store them in the refrigerator. They actually keep for weeks with this method. I am able to use smaller portions this way when needed.

@@sherrywilliams409 I make the roux with bacon drippings (you can use oil or lard also). If it’s a big pot of bens I’ll use 3 tablespoons of drippings and 3 tablespoons of flour. Always use the same amount of drippings/flour. Let it cook stirring it until almost gold color then pour the roux into the pot of beans. It will thicken them and make them creamy. Make sure your beans are still simmering.

I love refried beans but I didn’t know how to make them. I always just bought them in the can even though I use dried beans all the time. This makes all the difference in the world! I’ll be making them this way from now on and forgetting the canned beans. I actually have dehydrated all types of beans after soaking and cooking to have ready in less time. I’m going to rehydrate some pinto beans today and fry them up tonight! Thanks so much. In the past, I just tried to fry them without the liquid…….so they were flavorless and dry, as you can imagine.

@@marcyinspired1442 . Thanks. I use beans the regular way with overnight soaking if I think ahead. But I love to dehydrate them so I can ways just throw them in soup or a casserole or burrito at the last minute. (Well. It’s more then a minute cuz you have to rehydrate them if it isn’t soup! Lol.) Dehydrate slowly…..and long so they are completely dry. Then I just store them in any glass jar. They don’t need oxygen absorbers or anything special. It’s 10 am and someone wants beans and rice tonight…..got it! 😉Northern bean soup?….right on it! Cheaper and better then can. The getting beans dehydrated takes time….but not work. Soak one-two nights, cook during the day, dehydrate that night, put in a jar. I make a few jars of different beans a couple times a year or whenever they start to get low. Give it a try! Thanks for all your videos. I’m doing your enchiladas next!

It used to be that people made refried beans with a lot of lard. While delicious, they were also oily and definitely not healthy. Fortunately, we've realized all that fat is not necessary. Thanks so much for watching. Here's a link to my Huevos Rancheros recipe, in case you're interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gH3KmmV7e5Jseposi=p45iKBH4nhEl8smS

Melting the cheese in there is brilliant, thank you for sharing this tip. I like to make mine with browned butter or ghee and sauté a lil finely diced onion before I add the beans. Then I also add some homemade chicken stock.

Bacon grease! I tried making these for years before I figured out that the "secret ingredient" was bacon grease (in the skillet when frying them). Also some ground thyme when boiling the beans or 'croc-potting' them. I'm glad you mentioned the bacon grease :) . Also make sure you put the croc-pot on high (in case that's not mentioned in the video)

Try epazote. It is a leaf of a plant. You can sometimes get it at little Mexican markets in the produce section but more easily, you can get it in the little bags with the various dried chile peppers. The dried bagged stuff often has many stems as it seems they just chop the whole plant up. I remove all of the stems and put it into a jar. Anyway these are often used in frioles.

I’ll brown some onion and garlic in my pan then add my cooked beans. That adds a nice flavor as well. Thank you for your recipe.

I used to hate how gassy beans made me. Now, I SOAK them for 24 HOURS, changing the water and rinsing well about four times, about every six hours. Then, I rinse well, place them in FRESH water and cook til done without salt. ABSOLUTELY NO FLATULANCE. GUARANTEED.

If you need to speed it up your first soak can be boiling water poured over the beans. Cover and let them cool to room temp. Drain, rinse, and repeat.

I will have to start making my own refried beans. My grandson is part Hispanic and loves Mexican food so I try to cook him something nice and these refried beans will be perfect to make to go along with some of the foods I cook.
