Doug Hepburn the first man to bench Press 500lb never used Steroids,Paul Anderson .Reg Park was the second man after Doug Hepburn to bench Press 500lb he did it by copying Hepburns 8x2 routine .The russians wrote to thank doug Hepburn for this routine and called him the Grandfather of Weightlifting because he did it without the use of Steroids, his System is still used to day.John Davis used a similar system and was world champion and did it without Steroids. All of these routines can be found on the web.Natural Powerlifters can Deadlift 700lb and Bench Press 400lb and Squat 700lb

+John Lain Much evidence indicates Reeves was natural. 1/His 214 lb weight was quite light for his 6'1" height, even by the standards of his era. He looked big because his waist was so tiny. 2/ His photos at age 16 are of kid almost as muscular as he ever got. 3/It's been proven by work-records that Reeves was not on the same continent as Kurt Marnul at the time Marnul accused him, (not to his face), of giving him steroid advice. 4/ Modern estimates of Reeves' FFMI, ( Fat Free Mass Index), list him at 23, the _least_ "muscular" Mr America ever, comparing back as far as 1939. Most old-timers were c25-26. Modern guys can reach 40. 1/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7496846 (Note the highest FFMI at the time was 30. This study was done in 1995) 2/ www.alanaragonblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Aug-2014-AARR-Eric-Helms-Article.pdf (Scroll to mid-page for Mr America FFMI's from 1939-1959

In addition to having been blessed with great genetics, Steve Reeves was a pioneer and innovator of various exercises and equipment that allowed him to develop his body and surpass his fellow bodybuilders of his day. He strove to create symmetry and a classic physique over a large bulky muscular physique.

I just watched Steve Reeves in the original movies "Hercules" [1958] & "Hercules Unchanged" [1960] last week. Not only was Reeves one of my life heroes, he was the one major influence that kept me completely away from steroids, when I lifted weights in the late 60's/early 70's. Knowing that Reeves didn't even have the benefit of nutritional supplements (only good food) to build his incredible body, I just laughed at all of the other weightlifters who believed steroids were necessary/mandatory.

Argue who is the strongest. Debate who is the fastest. Steve Reeves had the most perfectly proportioned, best looking body in history. CASE CLOSED. Like Apollo descending from Olympus. The bodybulkers of today are descending down a more tragic path. Size and mass have transcended the beautifully sculpted body of Reeves in his era. Even more amazing Reeves may have been the best looking guy ever as well. Nature was overly kind to this man. He made sure he returned the favor.

There were many bodybuilders with a great and awesome body. But I think that the difference between them and Steve Reeves is that in the first case their bodies seem like "human bodies", while the body of Steve Reeves was so perfect in his forms and full of absolute beauty that his images seem like the images of a "demigod statue", not a human. Every detail is flawless. I have never seen another man like him.

Steve Reeves literally worked his ass off to get this Body. He trained intensely, he ate big meals, he rested properly. He adapted very well to the Gym life, training seriously everytime he entered. Untill his peak at 24 Years old. He achieved everything in Bodybuilding. He believed in Natural Bodybuilding, because at his time nobody used Steroids, so for him it would be TABOO to use illegal substances. Hope this opens your eyes for all people that think he was on some Drugs. He really wasn't and he should be an example for today's Generation.

According to Debbie Reynolds , Reeves was so overpoweringly good looking other mainstream hollywood leading men refused to appear onscreen next to him in the small bit parts he was offered in the US. I beg to differ. My coach who knew one his friends personally back in the 40s said that Steve hardly even trained. His recovery from workouts was unreal so he hardly needed to hit the gym. He was already genetically predisposed to being big so it didn't take him a long time to get to the physique he wanted to get. That still doesn't take anything away from the Legend that he is! Just means that us mere mortals need to train twice as hard or even more to get anywhere near what he looked like!

I know for a fact that Schwarzenegger and Zane used steroids, and most probably excessively compared to the average user. Schwarzenegger used steroids from a very young age infact. The reason people use so much nowadays is because they want to push their bodies beyond previous champions of the sport. If you think modern bodybuilders don't put the same amount of work in at the gym and with their diets because of steroids, then you can't have very much knowledge of bodybuilding or steroids.

Reeves built his physique working out MultipleXPrWk. When he achieved what he desired, he -avoided- more size. When muscles aren't dependent on drugs or supps, you keep them w/less training, especially if you dont want further gains. When he resumed training a couple months before each contest, it was w/a vengeance. From middle-age on, Reeves went back to training multipleXsPrWk. (Recovery means you're ready to work again, not that you dont have to. Novices recover faster than elites.)
