Love it! Had never heard this song before. As I watched the performance, though, I suddenly realized that Andrea Bocelli (my favorite tenor) has had to memorize everything! I know most singers etc. do, but seeing Placido Domingo use music sheets just reminded me of it.
@indigohasegawa23 сағат бұрын
I think it's because Domingo is singing the baritone part here even though he is a tenor. He would know the tenor part by heart having performed the full opera before. Just my guess though.

My message to the "expert" critics is that instead of analyzing and criticizing the different aspects of this performance and tearing it apart ask yourself just one question: Do you enjoy it? Does it gives you pleasure? If no, than just turn it off and listen to something else, and be quiet.

"over the past 500 years". At the time of (my) writing, in 2020, the opera had been written only 157 years ago (so, for the OP, only 151 years). To be fair, the previous 349 years would have (trivially) held no better recordings. So there is a sense in which "the past 500 years" is true. But it might as well have been "the last 4 billion years".

Love it! It always amazes me that most singers/opera singers need to look at lyric sheets, teleprompters, etc. but since Andrea Bocelli can't, he always has everything memorized perfectly. He's incredible!
@emmavink4 жыл бұрын
Um, no. The vast majority of opera singers are word perfect by the the time of performance. They don't use teleprompters. Where there are screens its to see the composer in the orchestra pit.
@stefanierohan6674 жыл бұрын
Well, to be fair, Domingo will have the tenor part memorised, having played the part in 1964. And at this writing he has memorised the baritone part, as he played that role in 2018.
@sonnyyu88934 жыл бұрын
What amazes me though is that he had to learn the lyrics (even in a foreign language in this case), pitches, rhythms for all the songs he sings all by just listening and without anything to look at. And to be fair, extremely rarely had I seen Bocelli forgets about lyrics on stage. Considering the wide range of songs he sings, that is an accomplishment in itself.

The first time I really heard and listened to this duet, I realized what it was all about. Bizet's magnificent score and the rising tenor voices, cut through all the burdensome weight of time and of the pretense of musical hype, to touch the real meaning of the struggle and rewards of life that can be shown through art. This is why there is a form of music known as grand opera, and why I love it. Yes, the performance was sublime, but so are so many we might listen to. Deny yourself nothing, simply enjoy!

@AstriaICOW8 жыл бұрын
+John van der Steeg It's not a good comparison really. Both Bjorling and Pavarotti are considered the best tenor of their generation. Bocelli is good but he mostly got famous due to his disability, there are much better tenors out there than him. Of course each singer is unique, but there are standards that can be measured.

+AstriaICOW : I agree Bjorling and Pavarotti are indeed two of the finest but it's difficult to say who is the absolute finest, there have been so many wonderful tenors including Domingo of course but to say one is the finest? . If I was pushed I honestly don't believe I have ever heard another human being sing like Bjorling, but arias by all the great tenors are so different and wonderful in their own way I could not chose one

+Ron Wylie : What amazes me most about Jussi Bjorling that he never really has to push and he sings so effortlessly.

+AstriaICOW Beauty, whether visual, or in a voice, is still in the eyes of the beholder, or in this case, listener. I love Bocelli, but I do understand he is not the best tenor in the world, even though some of his fans would argue to the death! If people are talking about technical ability only, then they do not appreciate what is beautiful.

Absolutely spectacular. I’m ashamed to say I’ve never heard Andrea Bocelli’s voice until now. This was a very emotional and beautiful piece of music. Plácido Domingo - my god, I could listen to him all day. I’ve always been a big fan of music. Italian opera, classical, Baroque, Renaissance- it never ceases to amaze me. I got chills listening to this.

You haven't missed much - Bocelli doesn't compare with the operatic greats.
