What amazes me though is that he had to learn the lyrics (even in a foreign language in this case), pitches, rhythms for all the songs he sings all by just listening and without anything to look at. "over the past 500 years". At the time of (my) writing, in 2020, the opera had been written only 157 years ago (so, for the OP, only 151 years). To be fair, the previous 349 years would have (trivially) held no better recordings. So there is a sense in which "the past 500 years" is true.
@ursmue19375 жыл бұрын

Disappointed to see a lot of opera snob comments attacking Bocelli, who, IMO, here sings in an adequately operatic style and pulls off this difficult tenor part perfectly well. Some people said he shouldn't do it because he's not an "opera singer", because he doesn't sing in whole operas - but he's not trying to sing in a whole opera here, just perform a piece in a concert, so what's the problem? I also saw someone saying Domingo singing the baritone part was gimmicky - they obviously didn't know he's performed as a baritone a number of times in the last few years, as, at his age, and never a high tenor, he now finds it easier, which is perfectly fine too. I actually fine it quite humble of him to do this popular piece and leave the showier tenor part to his less highly thought of (by opera fans) partner.
@orlando09810 жыл бұрын
***** I already said that. What I meant was it could be seen as quite humble for him to do this piece, which tends to set off the tenor voice particularly well (whoever is singing it) - when he has always been known for his great tenor singing in the past - as opposed to just doing baritone solos or singing duos with female partners etc.
@Knightoftheorient8 жыл бұрын
Bocelli couldn't perform in a full opera even if he wanted to because of his blindness. He can't read music so he has to feel the music out with his hearing and interpret it as best as he can. In the upper register he is amazing, he has the Lyric range that Pavarotti had but less powerful, however his mid and lower registers develop an unauthodox wobbly vibrato and his voice becomes thin and strangled. I found opera elitist snobbery the lowest of the lows, most of these so-called expert critics have never sang a note in their lives never mind attempt to sing opera so my advice to them is unless you can go up on stage and sing better then someone like Bocelli or any other Tenor you like to scrutinise then shut the hell up!

Holy crap! This has to be the best concert performance f this duet that I've ever seen - and then some... A world class tenor dropping down a bit (natural range?) and a blind tenor wo obviously cannot read a score. They SING and when the fine coordination is necessary, they touch. A challenge at best, these fellows pull it off with heaven-given class. Well aware of Mr. Bocelli for many years and well aware that he could sing, I had No Idea that his voice was that clear or powerful. Mr. B. Can lead the pack and he obviously has the voice. Mr. Dominigo, we know and well love...over 40+ year he has demonstrated that he can sing ANYTHING - and well. The best, most versatile voice if the current century. The gentleman can make any tune unto a symphony. Some ill informed fans still cling too the wonderful voice of Pavoratti. I get it. and he was among the best. He NOT a musician in Mr. Domingo's 'SS, but simply a gifted and powerful singer. Mr. Domingo has those assets as well but can also play piano and a professional level, compose and duct and even manage TWO opera companies! ' If #45's policies are executed in full, eve the talented U.S. citizen may get tossed out... Is this what we want? #45 has a lot in common with Adolph Hitler, pre-1933. ENOUGH That #45 fool simply must go.. The terms or means do not matter - just Get Him OUT! What do I REALLY Want? More classical tracks and less about the truly sad #45. An airhead at best.

Pav was a great singer but not a musician. Domingo is a great singer plus great musician. Neither is the best of all time, but they are outstanding. I prefer Domingo's voice, as it is fuller, richer and more versatile.

If any one says that Placido should quit his career, the may I suggest asking the people that he has worked with like Anna Netrebko and Rolando villazon how long he has been in the opera industry. By the way his voice is still good that's why people still work with him and Andrea.That just goes to show you that even though they are getting old, they still have the voice that can get people to come to their shows.

Amara B That´s true. Maestro Domingo is lucky AND wise enough to find some magnificent music he can sing now, as an elderly gentleman. Switching to baritone, if need be, but with the grace and excellence we know from his tenor days.

One of the greatest operatic duets ever composed, the beautiful and powerful duet from "The Pearl Fishers" by Bizet. This is an outstanding performance by two of operas greatest tenors, Placido Domingo and Andrea Bocelli.

A better version of this is the recording with Jussi Björling and Robert Merrill. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4G8pWV-oaeor6s

There is always going to be opinion differences on just about everything including this duet performance. I have heard the other one that you believe is superior and really it’s just a matter of taste. In this his case I don’t agree or disagree. Both are excellent.

You think Bocelli is one of opera's 'greatest tenors'? You obviously haven't listened to many then?

@@Brace67 When did I say I was an expert - although I obviously know as much, if not more than you about the subject? Everyone is allowed to express a personal opinion, which is really what we are talking about, even me. How many of the great tenors have you listened to, incidentally? Could you name some of them? If you have really LISTENED to some of the greats you would know that Bocelli's voice is poor by comparison. By the way the word is 'whence'.
@wildizer8 жыл бұрын
this is a good performance. what everybody is failing to notice (this is common among non-music technologists) is that the quality of the sound recording in this clip is extremely poor, not the performance. It is not mixed well and it is compressed to buggery. The uploader is probably blissfully unaware that they have ruined the soundtrack of the clip by applying all kinds of conversion and filter nonsense, rendering the soundtrack into an awful state. If any of you have this original recording form the original broadcast or the DVD, please play it back to back with this and you will notice the significant quality difference and the improved mix of voice and orchestra. this will make the aural experience a much more pleasureable one. Alas, most people are not aware that fucking about with audio like this completely ruins the soundtrack and you end up with comments like below where people blame the artist, rather than the technical sound issue..

Just a great piece of music and if Andrea Bocelli helps to bring more people to classical music, good on him. It's not a "who's got the greatest voice competition". Bocelli is no Pavarotti and Pavarotti is no Jussi Bjorling. So what ?!! There all beautiful in their own right.
@FelizNAVIDad2939 жыл бұрын
Well said John. All their voices have unique qualities. I'm 18, and opera and classical music is my favorite genre to listen to. Been to two operas in my life, once by Bocelli
@AstriaICOW9 жыл бұрын
+John van der Steeg It's not a good comparison really. Both Bjorling and Pavarotti are considered the best tenor of their generation. Bocelli is good but he mostly got famous due to his disability, there are much better tenors out there than him. Of course each singer is unique, but there are standards that can be measured.
@RonWylie-gk5lc9 жыл бұрын
+AstriaICOW : I agree Bjorling and Pavarotti are indeed two of the finest but it's difficult to say who is the absolute finest, there have been so many wonderful tenors including Domingo of course but to say one is the finest? . If I was pushed I honestly don't believe I have ever heard another human being sing like Bjorling, but arias by all the great tenors are so different and wonderful in their own way I could not chose one
@johnvandersteeg9 жыл бұрын
+Ron Wylie : What amazes me most about Jussi Bjorling that he never really has to push and he sings so effortlessly.
@carolina19549 жыл бұрын
+AstriaICOW Beauty, whether visual, or in a voice, is still in the eyes of the beholder, or in this case, listener. I love Bocelli, but I do understand he is not the best tenor in the world, even though some of his fans would argue to the death! If people are talking about technical ability only, then they do not appreciate what is beautiful.

The first time I really heard and listened to this duet, I realized what it was all about. Bizet's magnificent score and the rising tenor voices, cut through all the burdensome weight of time and of the pretense of musical hype, to touch the real meaning of the struggle and rewards of life that can be shown through art. This is why there is a form of music known as grand opera, and why I love it. Yes, the performance was sublime, but so are so many we might listen to. Deny yourself nothing, simply enjoy!
