Margaret Pole the Countess In The Tower was born 14 August 1473, Lady Margaret was one of the few surviving members of the Plantagenet dynasty after the Wars of the Roses. In 1512, Margaret Pole became Countess of Salisbury. Reginald Pole her son warned of the dangers of the Boleyn marriage.
In 1537, Reginald was created a Cardinal. Pope Paul III put him in charge of organising assistance for the Pilgrimage of Grace a popular uprising that began in Yorkshire in October 1536 and without a doubt The "most serious of all Tudor rebellions", in protest against Henry VIII's break with the Roman Catholic Church.
With Reginald on the run, it would be down to Thomas Cromwell and Richard Rich to find suitable replacements! By May 1539, Henry, Margaret, Exeter and others were attainted. This conviction meant they lost their titles and their lands. Margaret Pole, now without her title was held for the next 2 and a half years in the Tower of London.
On the morning of 27 May 1541, Margaret was told she was to die within the hour.

She had a stronger claim to the throne than the Tudors; that could be one of the reasons Henry VIII had her executed disguising it as treason, like his treatment of Buckingham in 1521. He had to make sure there were no more Plantagenets around and secure the throne for Edward VI, IMO. Great video, thanks. 👍

Yes! A video on Margaret Pole, a true royal and gracious lady. Loved the rotating glass crown animation at the beginning. An eventful life marked by many many moments of heartache and loss. Such a kind hearted, strong and moral person who knew her worth. She was so loyal to Catherine of Aragon and the Princess Mary. Such a shame she didn't live to see Mary as Queen. We know Henry VIII to be a tyrant who did many a cruel thing but for me, sending an innocent, frightened and elderly lady to the block was the most heartless and evil of all. The thought of her horrific final moments would bring a tear to anyone's eye. I hope she found peace in the afterlife 🌹🙏💕

Thanks Shane, much appreciated! Glad you like the FX, did you notice the 3D pans too? As for the story, you're quite right she comes across as a really good person who tried very hard to bring up her family in the best way possible, yet Henry once again had to spoil everything!

Margaret Pole lived a truly traumatic life. Her father was executed for treason. She and her brother had a greater right to the throne than even Richard III not to mention Henry Tudor. Her brother was permanently imprisoned and she was treated like a poor relation by both kings. I’ve always wondered what Elizabeth of York, Henry VII’s wife and Margaret’s first cousin felt about the way that her two cousins were treated. If she did speak up on their behalf would either man have actually even listened to her? Or, after the experiences she went through, especially when she, her siblings and mother were forced to go into sanctuary twice during the on again off again kingship of her father, did she stay quiet and hope for the best? The way that Henry VIII turned on Margaret when she was old was beyond evil. Her only crimes were being a York by birth and being the mother of Reginald Pole who was a religious fanatic who loved to goad Henry on after the break from the Catholic Church and a highly placed member of the Catholic priesthood. Earlier Henry had trusted her to raise his daughter Mary. Talk about a position of trust and honor! Then he decided that she was Public Enemy #1 and attainted her for treason! I’m sure that he had her attainted because if there’d been a public trial the citizens would’ve been on her side. There are absolutely no adequate words to describe poor Margaret’s execution. Shameful, sick and wrong only barely begin to describe what that poor woman suffered. May Henry VIII reside in the lowest and worst level of hell forever!

Unfortunately you don't get to choose your family. Many of my ancestors were punished for things prior generations did. Stripped of titles, land, sent to other countries, executed. Even nowadays your family name can get you into trouble (or out of it). I have a pretty unique surname, and a younger brother who's angered every cop and judge in a 3 city radius (which is pretty impressive since our dad was a cop himself lol). The second someone in my city hears my last name they have an opinion of me, without actually knowing me. I'm just glad we don't get executed for our siblings stupidity anymore lol

Why do they rarely ever tell us what the money or inheritances ( such as Margaret receiving 2,500 pounds ) would EQUAL IN THIS DAY and AGE ? Is that not equal to perhaps 2 million or more ? It would be interesting if from now on we are told what the money equals in these modern times , otherwise there's no real context .

Margaret was deliberately married off to a man of low rank; a Tudor retainer, and a relation of Margaret Beaufort (Henry VII's mother). This was to diminish her status as a royal. Margaret was arguably the true Queen of England - her father was heir to Edward IV for some time, and Edward IV's own children were bastardized. Not unreasonably, in the latter case, as Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville married in secret, and the marriage wasn't announced until four months later, when marriage negotiations with France were underway (Edward's court didn't know what Edward had done - and why didn't he tell them?). Robert Stillington, Bishop of Bath and Wells, and Edward IV's former Chancellor, claimed that he performed a prior wedding between Edward IV and Eleanor Talbot, thus invalidating Edward's concurrent marriage to Elizabeth Woodville. If Edward's marriage was invalid, so was his children's status as heirs. Henry VII didn't claim a blood right to the throne. It was through conquest that he justified his right to rule. However, if one can challenge the throne and win, why can't anyone then move to claim the crown? Even so, some tangential inheritance was a prerequisite to making a play for the crown - as it was for Kings William I, Stephen, and Henry VII himself (he was a descendant of Edward III, although via an invalidated, bastard line). Both Henry and his wife, Elizabeth of York, had the taint of bastardy, whereas Margaret was the trueborn daughter of a Plantagenet (her brother was the last direct-line male Plantagenet), daughter of the richest heiress in England, and granddaughter of the paramount lord in the kingdom. Compared to a scion of Welsh squires and his wife, bastard, and daughter of a woman from the petty gentry, Margaret Pole was overwhelmingly regal.

Which, combined with her truly stupid sons, is why she died. She might have well been innocent of treason but neither of her sons were. In fact, her youngest even was bold enough to make a vocal claim to the throne. This doomed the entire family.
