He was bordering on pretty hostile at points during that interview. And as his interviewee kept her composure he looked a bit silly at times. All with hindsight of course. You’d have to go back to 1989 to judge whether it was reasonable for him to ask that same question 8 times and maybe it was. Of course Paxman famously asked Michael Howard the same question 12 times but that question was about due process. Walters’ question here is much more personal.

Brian was by far the best interviewer full stop. He never resorted to anger or insults unlike the weasels we have today. His calm persistence and analytical style was a real joy to watch. I admit to being a great supported of Margaret Thatcher and felt she was betrayed in the most despicable way by her fellow MP's. This interview is perfect example of two of the best at their respective professions. I always watched all his interviews because they were so good. I loved when he got the weasel MP's into a corner with no where to go. His expression "I don't want to put words in your mouth but is this what you are saying ..............?", when he did this they were doomed. I did admire David Frost but Brian had tenacity to expose the weasels with his skill before they realised they had shot themselves in the foot. He also admitted a failure of a policy he got passed as a Labour MP which showed great humility. Sadly missed.

This is an impressive interview from Mrs Thatcher. It was a tenuous moment for her as she had become more isolated in the cabinet regarding Europe - difficult because the party itself included a spectrum of belief on a very emotive and fraught question. However even in this tricky moment Mrs Thatcher knew how to remain within her convictions, which time was to tell were on point regarding the importance of the Madrid conditions. In my view Brian Walden was the best political interviewer of the day, however Mrs Thatcher was more than a match for his interrogation. Though Brian Walden is very forceful and accusatory in his questioning here I think it is not difficult to see his amused respect for Mrs Thatcher's ability to bounce off him. Mrs Thatcher had something she wanted to say and knew how to say it. I am by no means a fan of all that the Thatcher governments did - far, far from it. But I have to say the intelligence, competence, sincerity, quick-wit, and even humour in Mrs Thatcher's delivery were formidable. All are on show here.

Most people wouldn't want a system where politicians decide such things. Whether the police and cps failed in their duties is a separate matter. For an example of why we do not want politicians putting their beaks into such matters read about Tom Watson and Carl Beech. Having done that ask yourself whether Tom Watson knew with any more or less certainty than Thatcher may have had, or if it even mattered.

@lancechinnian404315 күн бұрын
Wow! Now THIS is how you do political interviews. And as much as it pains me to admit, Thatcher does actually manage to hold her own pretty well here.
@JohnSmith-xw6pq7 жыл бұрын
"I like strong men and women around me, that's how we make a strong government", Thatcher worked so hard to turn this country around, she would turn her grave to see the Conservative party led by Cameron, Maybot, insisting on surrounding themselves by imbeciles, paid £billions to keep Maybot in power, not even able to face live debate during the election that Maybot requested herself. The labour alternative is no better. Now, they are negotiating Brexit. Sovereignty can only be withheld by strong leadership, Thatcher and Churchill were. Thatcher understood economy and executed in full force. I love watching her interviews, strong, decisive, facts based.

Thatcher had quarreled with the monarchy, the House of Lords, the Church of England, the Inns of Court, the University of Oxford and the Chiefs of Staff-every ancestral prop of the British state. Detestable though she was, she was a radical and not a reactionary. She has not been removed for any of her offenses against democracy or decency. Rather, she has been deposed by those who worship only opinion polls and their own skins and who yearn for a quiet life and business as usual-living gallantly off the fat of the land.

Vladimir Putin - "Detestable though she was..." ONLY to Lefties, Vlodya ! Although even Michael Foot - when confronted with a bunch of braying Champagne Socialists at a cocktail party - said, walking away in disgust at their stupidity, "at least, she's got GUTS !" She was a Giant(ess) deposed by MIDGETS. And it isn't usually possible to bring about major-but-necessary changes in one's country's internal affairs by being 'nice' to everyone. She was a Politician - not a bloody Pop Star.

Unlike Frost Nixon, the set up for this lasted years. This is like watching the final bit of an interview with Maggie softened up and made comfortable with easy questions over several years. Meant she was completely caught off guard when the questions immediately went for the jugular.

Did anyone figure out her explanation as to why Nigel Lawson resigned ? Walden summarised it as she didn’t know, and she didn’t correct him. She said that Lawson’s position was unassailable (from her point of view) meaning that she wouldn’t fire him. But, he fired himself, and she tried to worm her way out of explaining what his motivation was for doing that.

Brian Walden was one of the most incisive and tenacious interviewers we have seen yet here in the UK; and it'll be interesting to see how Steve Coogan's 'take' on him goes down in Channel 4's 'Brian and Maggie' (Wed/Thurs this week, end of Jan 2025); I was 30 when this 'original' interview went out, and had previously admired his tenure on 'Weekend World' -essential viewing in the late '70s and early '80s under both Walden, and before him Peter Jay.

You can see Thatcher is rattled and annoyed despite her apparent composure, blinking several times as he frames his next question. She then accuses Walden of being domineering which is amusing and ironic. She recites the litany of achievements under her government: privatisation of nationalised industries (for the benefit of shareholders), home ownership of council housing, reform of NHS and education, outsourcing of public services to lowest bidder. Doesn't need much hindsight to realise her legacy looks pretty shabby now.

This was a pivotal moment in the fall of the T Lady. Walden had been very sycophantic to her in previous years but this time he went after her with both barrels. The "off her trolley" remark stuck in the minds of the public and if one looks at her distant expression to Walden's badgering it certainly inspired confidence in her detractors in her own party to go after her and dethrone her in a very Conservative coup the following year.

One interview where Thatcher didn't get the better of her interviewer. She came off worst here and she knew it. In hindsight this was the beginning of the end. Compare this to today's garbage with Johnson having selfies with Holly and Phil and hiding in fridges. Imagine if Walden had been let loose on Starmer and Abbott or Farage or Johnson or Patel or Gove?
