The increasing distance between Margiela's shows and the rest of Paris fashion week makes a nice metaphor for his confidence that everyone would eventually have to come to him, he wasn't going to compromise and move closer to anyone else. In fact he was going to keep moving out and they'd have even further to come to catch up.
@BlissFoster

Andrew Baker the first three continued to move farther out. This location was slightly closer than the third as the crow flies (idk about traffic and stuff tho). Your point still stands tho.

I've done some digging and this wasn't just a normal post office it was a sort of rail freight office ran by the French national rail company so that probably explains the memorial plaque on the wall. Around 1,500 French rail workers were involved in sabotaging the rail system during WW2.

Andrew Baker I was wondering why they put such emphasis on it in the video. All that footage is official MMM footage. Why did they linger on it so long?

@@BlissFoster Well I might be reaching but possibly it's the expression of something very dramatic on such a sort of dull and almost tawdry way. Maybe it was just unexpected to find something like that there. Maybe it just caught the eye of the videographer aesthetically.

I AM LIVING FOR THIS CONTENT! btw I saw the Margiela exhibition in Paris 2y ago and bought that book too, full of precious infos. I just wanted to add a curiosity about that cool punky sweater that Martin's mum did: instead of needles, she uses pieces of broomsticks, whittled down by the designer’s father, to produce an open, irregular stitch. With the assistance of few friends Margiela’s mum produced 40 such articles in 3 colors: sky-blue, madder rose, black. Love your channel xx

Another passionate and precise dissection - wow - thank you. I love the Fugazi-style "I'm not looking pen catch" The jacket at 22:30 is remarkably similar to Westwood's Eastwood jacket - a piece designed for the A/W 1984 collection (her first independent from McLaren). However, that jacket was based on a mad costume worn by Clint Eastwood (obv) in the 1976 film Outlaw Josey Wales...

That test shot on the models coat is so interesting too bc we saw with the Raf hero’s collection that Raf almost took that idea and ran with it, using bts photography of his diff models from over the years and put them on his ready to wear garments. Just another example of how margiela influenced menswear, consciously through Raf seeing this show and thinking that would be a cool piece to wear or unconsciously, inspiring future designers to play with the idea of the behind the scenes aspect of fashion and championing not just the designers but the models as part of the art of fashion

Just discovered this channel and have been binging everything. Now I’m deep into this Margiela series and loving it. One thing that’s interesting to me is how people got so up in arms about Marc Jacobs showing grunge-lite in 93 for Perry Ellis when Margiela had been glorifying the beauty of cheap, re-used and everyday people clothing since 89. Do you think it’s because Perry Ellis was already this established brand and people thought that Marc Jacobs was bringing the brand down whereas Margiela came out of the gates as an avant garde grungey house without any airs of pretentiousness? Or do you think it was because Margiela was recontextualizing and deconstructing and in that way elevating used and cheap clothing? Maybe a mix of all of the above and other cultural elements that are hard to understand without being in the fashion industry and understanding the culture in the early 90s.

I should also say that I know almost nothing about the fashion world other than what I’ve learned the past few weeks from watching this channel, so any thoughts here are very welcome. Really love learning about this stuff and didn’t realize how much I would be interested in it all before now.

Strongly suggest you read Experimental fashion: performance art, carnival and the grotesque body by Francesca Granata. Two chapters are about Margiela, analyzing in great detail some of the collections. Some details I had never heard of about the collections and a very interesting focus on his work. It focuses on his work relating to Bakhtin theory of the grotesque body and carnival. A bit also about his focus on time and how it is related to the work of Derrida. Also includes a chapter about the 1997 S/S by Rei and another about Goergina Godley original Bumps and Lumps collection.

Amazing analysing as usual! On one note about the lining dress, lining could be made out of viscous, silk or even cotton. These fibres would become satin, for its comfortability as mentioned and its shininess, luxury. Viscous satin normally would be the choice on jackets, especially men’s jacket because it is more durable than silk. Then the dress shown would be even more interesting because it is borrowing the elements from men’s wear!

Thoughts on the flood of models at the start, the street musicians playing at the side and the whole mood and setting off the show. There seems to be this trend in these shows of mundane normal settings, so maybe this is the attempt to create almost like a fashion show that just happens to be taking place in a completely normal setting. Like you're just at the post office then the people walking past you are all of a sudden models showing off a collection. Streetwear in a very pure iteration of literal the clothes people are wearing on the street
