00:00 📚 Margins historically served to organize text, aid reading, and frame content, originating from blank edges in scrolls and later evolving in books. 01:17 🏰 Margins transitioned from practical separators to spaces for commentaries, aiding comprehension, aesthetics, and protecting texts. 02:40 📝 Marginal notes, or marginalia, in commonplace books include annotations, subheads, references, glosses, summaries, visual aids, notabilia, "maniculae" (hand symbols), corrections, questions, and ideas. 05:52 🖌 Visual illustrations or sketches in margins aid in highlighting key information or interpreting content, similar to medieval manuscript decorations. -06:43 👉 "Maniculae" or hand symbols point out important passages, emphasizing their significance within the text. 07:37 ❓ Adding questions in margins aids further investigation or explores additional aspects of the topic being studied. 08:33 📖 Marginal notes can be as valuable as the main text, providing hints, clues, and aiding comprehension, making annotated copies sought after for learning and review purposes.

This is beautiful. When I was at school, many years ago, I spent quite a bit of time doing title pages etc. One of my parents always told me off for wasting time, but it gave me so much pleasure. I've actually saved all those pages - not many of the books, just my drawings etc. I think I'll dig them out and incorporate them into my commonplace book. You've given me so much to think about.

The notebooks that I used in school had ridiculous pink margins. They still do. I hated it. When I started journaling I made a point to avoid notebooks with margins. But you made me realize how useful than can be in some situations. Probably, I will still not use them but the video is great and gives me ideas to consider and maybe use someday.

The beginning of this was particularly interesting to me because just last night I watched a fascinating video called: "Learn how to read Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs with Ilona Regulsk." I always love your books/journals. It's great to have a record of your life and experiences. I liked the part about Corrections! Making an error is always a fear when working in ink. But it's better to accept that, despite our best efforts, it will happen sometimes. It makes sense to incorporate corrections into the book, instead of freaking out and tearing out the page, or quitting altogether.
@journaldesylvie
@journaldesylvie Жыл бұрын
Hello Yesica, your comment about Ancient Egypt Hieroglyphs is interesting because I am currently summarizing same topic in my CPB (great minds 😉). As for the Corrections, I used to be guilty with this myself. I regret tearing many spreads in the past, but I finally overcame this illusion of perfection, specially when I look at DaVinci notes 😂. Correcting mistakes was quite normal back in time where manuscripts were hand copied. Thank you for your feedback - always appreciated.

What a gorgeous book you made!! It is really stunning and it looks to me as the most beautiful history book. Making history more fun then boring, your book is the best thing I have seen ever. I love history, especially of the Great Masters, pitty you wrote the name of Vincent van Gogh wrong, my fav painter and Dutch like me. I have always had the idea of starting a study, but now I know what the most gorgeous and efficient way would be. I just strated this last week my first commonplace book, ofcourse all about art, but it is nothing like yours. I love what I have done so far, but your video gave me al the information I needed. I have seen so many videos about commonplace books, most are just writing with evey now and then some pictures etc, But your gorgeous book is such a great inspiration. especially all the info around the margins, so helpfull. I am on my way, love what I have done and with your video I know how I can make it even more me then it allready is. Thank you so much for this great video, have a nice day.

Hello, Good question 🙋‍♀️ so in reality the classic way to is to have one margin for every single page However, you always can customize your notebook as you see fit, depending on the content In my other commonplace book I have more writing and I needed the margins at every page kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6CkaKR8lN2Hra8

Beautiful. But why do only some pages have lined margins?
@journaldesylvie
@journaldesylvie Жыл бұрын
😉 it depends on how you wish to arrange the pages as long as you have a margin as a concept. In some commonplace books I keep one margin for every page. In this particular one, because it contains a summary of a general knowledge, I was able to compile what I need in one margin and leave more space for contents and visuals.
