Yulian Sitkovesky (Юлиян Григорьевич Ситковетский) may not be a household name but is not unknown to music lovers. My father was on a business trip to Moscow in 1977 and one of his presents for me was a set of 5 LPs of Y. Sitkovetsky. Unfortunately, Glazunov's violin concerto was not included. Sitkovetsky's life ended prematurely but was lived at its full. During a live concert translated on the radio, he broke a string. For some time he played on 3 strings and during a short pause in his part borrowed a violin from nearby orchestra violinist. Sitkovetsky finished the concert without anybody on the radio (including his teacher Prof. Yampolsky) noticing. In his final days, being already gravely ill, Sitkovetsky started learning the First violin concerto of Shostakovich. He couldn't stand anymore and had to strap himself to the headboard of the bed. Nevertheless, he played the concert amazingly well and was acknowledged by Shostakovich himself.

One of the best examples of the Russian School of violin playing. This recording to me is the best out of all of them!!!!. Better than the well known first recording made by Milstein.
