Remember that this film is a portrayal of the last year tours which were a great gift to us from Callas but certainly a great burden to her artistry. What Jolie must convey is the tentativeness of the voice, the anxieties about whether she could satisfy both her own demanding sense of the art she loved as well as the audience expectations and hopes. This clip seems to show just that particularly the cutting between Jolie and Callas voice in its prime. Callas was unique, formidable always, and a consummate vocal artist who sacrificed greatly to bring one more experience of her art to the public. Jolie is a courageous talent for taking the risk of doing this film and should be judged on her acting of the role not on her vocal abilities by themself. I saw Callas on that final tour and the sense of anxiety that Jolie is showing in this clip was there in Callas demeanor. It was only as she began to sing each aria that it disappeared and the character that she was performing took over

Her energy is way too weak and overly emotional to be callas. Even when feeling unwell and defeated like in the hamburg concert callas maintained composure and restraint and a level of grace that Jolie just cannot convey. Really bad lip synching too. How could they rewatch the take and not feel uncomfortable?

I agree. The cast of Wicked doing their own singing (and live) really made that film come alive. Watching this lip syncing festa made me realise that singing roles should just be given to actors who are great singers. Excited to see the Bob Dylan biopic.

I studied classic singing and like all those who did and are in the field ,know that i takes at least 4 to five years and more to be able to sing even partly opera songs..an ooera voice needs time to grow slowly Even the most taelnted of the great voices in opera can not achieve doing it otherway,and certainly not with some so-called intensive lessons for a moovie! The voice used with the piano, is not Mrs Jolie's voice... which remooves nothing from her talent as an actrice.

And if you think Jolie managed to sound like the "bible of opera" in 6 months, I would go test your IQ, because it's clearly dangerously low. They've got her to sing just enough to Oscar campaign around that, and the fact that they had to blend her voice with Callas (basically overlay it) tells me everything I need to know about Jolie's "singing".

@@blackforest825 you cannot compare average talents and having someone to actually sing Callas. The moment they will put someone else to sing callas, it s JOKE! NOBODY can sing like Callas, EVER, they did exactly what they should do to save them from great embarrassment. Any other voice would sound ridiculous. There is a reason why there is Callas on the right and all other opera singers on the left. Jolie is perfect for this, lip singing is the only way to make a movie about Callas.
