As we reach out to artists along the way, we are just amazed at the outpouring of support that we receive. Who would have thought that Maria Brink of In This Moment was bullied when she was younger. Check out her message to both those that are bullied and those that bully others. Thank you Maria!

I was bullied my entire childhood. People don’t like to admit it, but that stuff stays with you. Even though I look back and laugh at how silly some of it was, I remember how much it impacted my self esteem and how hard it’s been to undo that damage. Social pain is devastating.

Bullying can have so much of an impact on somebody that they can actually loose the confidence to the point where they are afraid to speak to anybody who just speaks to them. I have experienced this and it was the most terrifying thing I have ever went through because people didn't give a fuck if I spoke or not in the school I was bullied in and or if I sat completely alone. But what was terrifying was when I had to move towns and go to a completely different school. At that point in my life I still was not speaking to anybody besides my family and it scared me when people actually sat with me on the school bus. I thought they were making fun of me like "oh look I'm going to go sit with the ugly girl" I was very happy to find out that there were actually people who are excepting of who you are. And there are cases of bullying where the victim is damaged for the rest of their lives with insecurities, worrying about being bullied again. It breaks my heart when I see somebody being bullied because I know how it feels and what kind of depression it causes. I have been out of this school 4 years and till this day I'm still in group therapy for what happened. It's not a fun thing to go through, and for anybody being bullied my advice would be stand up for yourself because if nobody else defends you at least you can be the person to have your own back.

The last bit you said- that last sentence- is probably the most powerful sentence in your comment. And it's so true. It might be hard but the one person you can guarantee will always have your back is yourself. So as long as you can defend yourself, use your voice and try your hardest to put an end to it and not let it get to you, you will be alright. YOU are the best person to take care of YOU. And I can only imagine what you must've gone through. People are absolutely cruel. It seems things are going much better and I am happy for you. I really hope group therapy is helping. I've been bullied when I was younger, just a bit, and it wasn't extreme or anything, but you could say I've dealt with different more abstract forms of it growing up. The ways are a bit less obvious. To put it simply, I've been let down an awful lot by people and not been taken seriously when I needed people to (and of course, they were my own friends). I have trust issues as it is but when I'm convinced someone is trustworthy I guess I get beaten down (figuratively). I too know what the depression feels like and am just beginning to see a counselor/therapist. I hope it works because I've been so skeptical about seeing one. But what I feel everyone needs to remember is that it's so important to get help. Even if it's temporary. Talk to someone you do trust, call your parents, or even speak to someone new standing beside you if you need to get something off your mind. Get out of it when it's too much. When so much stress and hurt builds up inside you, you don't know what could happen. Take care, whoever's reading this. And love yourself.

Yes, things are a lot better. I wish you luck in therapy and hope that everything works out for you. It's important to be positive instead of negative.

I love her so much... When i was in middle school, that was probably the hardest time for me as far as bullying goes, All the other girls had long hair and wore girly things and played sports, went shopping etc. I however had short black hair i kept to myself i had very few friends i had social anxiety to the point where if someone talked to me i would freak out run away and hide in the bathroom, I got called emo, ugly, i got tripped in the hallways, i got shoved into walls, people would push my head into the fountain if i went to get a drink, i got food thrown at me and stuck in my hair, people would tell me to go kill myself, tell me to "cut myself deeper next time" all sorts of fucked up shit. Eventually i had had enough, I ended up getting into alot of trouble in highschool because i started standing up for myself, I even started taking up for other kids who were getting bullied (which just made all the other asshles hate me that much more) I started fighting back but it took its tole, I had ups and downs... And shamefully one day i decided that i should just be a bully then maby people wouldnt fuck with me.. I felt horrible for it, but they broke me down i was just young, it didnt last long but eventually I came to the conclusion "fuck what anyone thinks" So i stopped trying to figure out what i should do and just went with the flow, eventually people backed off and noone picked on anyone around me because i started going ape shit on anyone who did. Ive been bullied, and been the bully. neither sides are good. Shes right though, it shouldnt happen at all, and gennerally the one doing it is fucked up too, they probably got pushed to the edge to think its a logical decision. Its sad, its a vicious cycle. But if you can EVER be the solution, even slightly, Do. one person can make a differance.

+zootedsuit I agree 100% but some schools would get you suspended, but if you're getting beat up, stand up for yourself, fight back, if you get suspended or expelled, bring it up in court, we have the right to defend ourselves.

So much love for Maria, wish I could have heard her say these words when I was in junior high, I was told too many hurtful things (that I won't get in to) that you would almost say that's not even bullying, that's straight up torture and harassment. But anywayz, Maria is so amazing and inspirational and beautiful, I have so much respect for her ♥

While a agree it's not right, it's not anywhere near the worse thing. Having your finger nails pulled out slowly, one at a time might be worse.

James, I know peo that have committed suicide due to severe bullying. I know many that fallen into very dark states bc of it. What an ridiculous analogy as the likelihood of someone getting their nails pulled out is miniscule while the likelihood of a person getting bullied at least sometime in their lifetime is 100%.

I don't understand why people put all this emphasis on the importance of bullying. It is not a really big deal, not when you compare it to the problems children who don't grow up in the wealthiest country on earth. We got it good, so good we feel the need to invent problems. Even if someone takes bullying seriously enough to hurt themselves, that's simply a sign of them being a weak person. People in other countries wonder about whether or not they'll get to work all day for a single meal and a few pennies. Compared to struggles like that, bullying ain't shit.

I hate to break it to you, but it's not our fucking problem if people in other countries can't get a job or take care of their five freaking children. They have WAY two many kids when they can barley take care of themselves. They shouldn't have kids if they're going to starve. That's just common sense. What bothers me is our government supports people in other countries more than people here. You can say I'm wrong but you haven't been there like other people. So don't mention people in other countries. It's their own fault they live the way they are. And yes bullying is a big fucking deal. Someone should never judge someone else and put them down and harass them. It's not in their place to say something.

Bullying is a problem. A big problem. And it's because of people like you that bullying still happens, whether people try to stop it or not. Sadly, though, there are those people, children with my more severe problems, you are right. Though no one tries to help them either. If we live in a world we no one cares about something such as bullying, then we don't "got it good".
