Fabuleux ,fabuleux , fabuleux !!!! Personne n'a jamais chanté cet air avec autant d'aplomb et de prise de risque .C'est maîtrisé de bout en bout et très très spectaculaire .La légende de Callas trouve ici sa justification et on constate que cet femme est unique .

The 55 Sonnambula sounds more childish, girlish ( also due to the lower tempi used), but the 57 Koeln and more so the Edingbourgh ones sound more veiling, longing and “sleepwalking”... not sure if i can trully exprime what i mean... anyway Maria was the only one to have both ends of the voice artistry so well managed : girlish voice and ravishing scorned woman voice ( Abigaille, Medea, Armida..). @@arboretum1153 there is no such recording! She sung it only with the Piccola Scala on tour in 57 in the UK, not in 55! She sung it 4 times and then left. They contracted behind her back a 5th night which she never agreed to and it all turned into a scandal because of it…

A more expensive gown or not at least it was still “period” accurate. What goes on today is hardly the same. Stark minimalism, post modern outfits, and the inside of a Dickensian schoolhouse for La Clemenza del Tito hardly makes even the vaguest sense. At least Visconti’s vision was pretty…

That’s an interesting take. I always took that decision by Visconti more as ‘presenting the diva’ than as promoting a concept though. In any case, I think he took Callas’s acting style in a stylized classical direction. The pictures of her in his productions are beautiful. The singing here is tremendous! Better than in 1957.

@@ER1CwC presenting the diva as in, a play within a play concept. It was done again for Devia in 1993. Even Callas was puzzled at first but he persuaded her and the rest is history. Her Amina was wonderful, especially the melancholic scenes. The joyless care compagne gives me the creeps a bit but the technical brilliance wins. Her scales are phenomenal.
