I also saw this Norma on January 5 1956. Even though I was only 15 years old it was a unique experience. It was the first time I saw Callas live and the first time I attended an Opera at La Scala. A completely unforgettable experience!! I have seen several Normas since that time but no other Norma came anywhere close to this. No other singer has managed to sing Norma adequately in my opinion. Now I don't go to see Norma any more. It is not worth it. Especially these last 15 minutes of it.

I never saw her live, but after hearing this, I'm spoiled for all other Normas. I hear singers such as Angela Mead or Sondra Radvanovsky get hailed as great Normas, and I listen to them and wonder what the fuss is all about. Even presumably the next great Norma after Callas, Joan Sutherland, never came close to what Callas achieved. Everything sounded the same, without any nuance or shading. Cabelle's Orange performance was beautiful, but still only a pretender to the throne of Norma. Callas set a gold standard with her Norma, just as she did with Lucia, Macbeth, Abigaile, Bolena, Pirata, Tosca, and Traviata. But if I had to take one role with I don't think any singer will ever achieve what Callas did, it would be her Medea. Her Medea and Norma will never be equalled.

My only problem with this recording is that I will never enjoy Norma or feel completely satisfied with any other performance; it's too much, it goes beyond belief. I might listen o others and like them but never like this. I think Pasta and Malibran must have had this kind of effect on their audience; everything had a meaning, every silence, utterance with a purpose. A true soprano sfogato.
