two things among the many that are striking: 1) various people here are commenting on Karjan's "control," but in fact there are many many places where he elects not to conduct precisely, but instead to rely on the orchestra knowing how the music goes, and in effect inviting the players to listen to the stage and go along with the singers. 2) the great majority of the time, he does what conductors are taught to avoid, i.e. "mirroring," showing the same thing with both arms at once. It feels natural, and is probably helpful to players watching from the extreme ends of the pit. Obviously he felt no need to "score points" by giving a demonstration of by-the-book maestro technique. Personally I would not say that this shows him at his very best, but it definitely shows him as an "old pro" of the opera house, leading a secure performance, trusting his singers and players, and ready to get specific when specificity is needed.

I am astonished at Karajan’s total control, and how much he communicates technically and expressively with his beautiful gestures. The body was frail, but the mind is frighteningly alert, and his powers of memory and utter self -confidence would have been the envy of Toscanini. I am subscribing immediately to the channel. I don’t know how the uploader got access to this, - but I’m sticking around to see if there’s more. I’m also saviing this immediately just in case the Karajan estate have it taken down. To think he passed away just four months after this performance... May he rest in peace. No doubt this is the result of Karajan's independent, voluntary and greedy learning from his first job as second conductor at the tiny, seven-meter-wide stage shed of the Ulm City Opera. What a positive change in Karajan's thinking! After the performance, as they were leaving for the dressing room, we could see the members of the Berlin Philharmonic in tears. At the time, Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic were in the midst of a conflict over the joining of the clarinetist Sabine Meyer, but the issue at hand was on a completely different level from what was happening on stage. Here we can get a glimpse of the psychological structure of the members of the orchestra, motivated by none other than the greatest maestro of his time, Karajan, who played the entire piece by heart without even having to open the score, keeping an eye on the stage and maneuvering with agility. Because he himself directed with supervised the operas, he had to constantly watch the movements of the singers on stage, so Karajan's belief was that he should conduct the performance completely from memory, and that was his normal way of doing things. A genius. He was truly a genius of hard work. It was Karajan who brought his Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra into the orchestra pit for the first time in the orchestra's history. I experienced their performances in Japan tour in 1979, 1981, 1984, and 1988. It was as if he was surrounded by a halo. Your presence will never fade. Rest in peace.🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹

It is extremely interesting to see his gestures and because I am a singer, I can tell how much he respects the breathing and expression of the stage performers. It must have been quite "comfortable" for the opera singers to sing under his baton. Also his gestures induce a very melodious flow, and careful to pinpoint the dramatic pivots. Puccini would have been nonplussed probably. It s an amazing performance. I am discovering Dame Barstow in Tosca and she is absolutely stunning.
@atsumoritokyo1101Ай бұрын
Very thanks!❤I’m understanding your comment for me. It can be said with confidence that Karajan's conducting technique is the pinnacle of conducting art, walking the true path of inaction and nature. The breath of the singers and the orchestra, the presence of meaning in the momentary segments. If anyone else tries to imitate it, they will soon find their own flaws.

What happened at 1:12:02? Right after Pavarotti sang "Vittoria!' for the second time, it seems he lost his place and didn't sing the next line? Or maybe it was the sound? Curious. Check it out. Also, the lighting in the pit of von Karajan makes his face look misshapen!
@mediolanumhibernicus33532 ай бұрын
You are absolutely right. Pavarotti doesn’t sing the four bars after a wonderfully sung ‘Vittoria!’. When he does come in on the fifth bar, he rushes ahead of the orchestra. Karajan’s calm and control here is awesome. Most other conductors here would have panicked. Karajan remains completely impassive. Already shortly before, at ‘m’hai tradita, maledetta!’, Karajan comes off the notes and is dodgy rhythmically. The truth is that,- for all his magisterial beauty of sound and unmatchable text projection, Pavarotti was what they refer to as a ‘mine vagrante’, - a ‘floating mine (as in landmine’). The Italians use this term to describe a musically unpredictable singer that could ‘go off’, or ‘explode’ at any moment. This is in no way meant to distract from Pavarotti’s awesome talents. Few could deal with this issue as effectively as Karajan, and it shows how much he valued this tenor that he was prepared to deal with this defect, which with any other singer he simply would not have accepted.

@@mediolanumhibernicus3353 Interesting. I did not know that "mine" expression. I do consider Pav the greatest singer of the 20th century, altho just two days ago a friend said he didn't care for Pav, preferring Domingo (the old debate... I myself used to cringe when Domingo had a high note coming up). I wonder what happened to Pav when he lost his way there...

No, Pavarotti turned down the notes, singing "l'alba vindice appar" with low tone, so he could improve his breath to sing with full voice the remaining lines... Pavarotti had this behavior often in "Tosca"... If you watch other Big Luciano's plays in "Tosca", you'll see this particular thing I told you
