Even though West Side Story is classified as a musical, I think of it more as an opera. Therefore it is a joy to see a performer sing this operatically. This was beautiful. Thank you for sharing this.

There are some thing that you have have to take into account: 1) he's an Italian singing an English song, 2) To hit the higher notes in a healthful way, you have to simply throw the words away. That's the Italian way. 3) he's used to singing in the Italian "noble" posture so movement effects, 4) the breathing is because he is acting this out. It's a musical theater piece, not a typical operatic song. 5) he is incredibly young for a tenor. his voice is still developing. I could go on...=)

Vittorio sang this song beautifully and better on the two albums than in this live performance. He has a fine operatic voice and should have a bright future transitioning into classical opera roles.

If you like Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli, or Il Divo you will love Joseph D'Alessandro Jr. Joseph is an authentic Italian lyric tenor with an amazing voice you will surely love. On his debut CD on iTunes he sings classic tenor cover songs…in both classical and pop styles such as "When You Say You Love Me", "Nella Fantasia", "Nessun Dorma", "Mama", "E Lucevan Le Stelle", and "The Prayer" which he sings with the incredible soprano, Helene Lundstrom, who sounds even better then Celine Dion.

You have a point, JoshiesJem. I didn't word that very well. Perhaps I should have said that there have been occasions when I think he has been even more brilliant than here. But this breath thing is only a minor technicallity overall and if you start focusing on these things you can deprive yourself of a lot of pleasure. So ok - 9.9999 out of ten?

I think this is beautiful, and a very sincere performance. 1.44 - 1.58 are lovely, strong flows into soft 2.11 - 2.14 soft flows seamlessly into strong. 2.32 - 2.36 VERY powerful. Don't know what you're complaining about. Alvastarr - upload your own vocal before you start complaining about it being "horrendous"

I just found your post battycys. I have to defer to your being there, but perhaps we are agreed that this was not Grigolo at his best. It is puzzling that his breathing is so pronounced here, and scarcely noticable in other recordings.

@seannj427 I actually love it when this show is sung operatically. Tony's music essentially requires an operatic voice to be sung well. However, operatic tenors who have attempted it in the past such as Carreras and this fellow, have horrendous accents which detract from the words. Tenors like David Miller truly do this role justice.

Great rendition of this song. Puts the actors who've played in the revival of WEST SIDE STORY on Broadway, which is closing today, to shame. Grigolo's diction is superior to another tenor who did a studio recording of WSS - Jose Carreras. Even though Bernstein conducted that project, the vocals of Carreras and Kiri Te Kanawa were simply too much for such lyrical roles. Grigolo, on the other hand, fits the role of Tony quite well.

@OdYsS916 жыл бұрын

Theory number 2. The boy is trained to sing more or less standing still, and his running around up and down stairs and waving his arms about is wrecking his technique. Perhaps I am biased in his favour, I do quite like the guy, he seems quite a character; but he's not always this bad!
@seannj42715 жыл бұрын
I agree his operatic interpretation of this particular piece may be less than what is desired for some, but it's 100% valid in my eyes. Now if he were singing this IN THE SHOW he'd have to back off on the opera and let the tones come out, but for a single stage performance, he's fine. One thing he does that is less than appealing is allow his breath noise to be heard, however that is a minor flaw in a very fine operatic performance of this somewhat difficult piece.
@benbrunning8 жыл бұрын
Great performance. I don't think there is an issue with breath control here its just a habitual thing that he may need to work on. personally think he looked in control the whole way through until the last note. The last Maria is right on the break for a male singer and I think he lost the note at the end as he was not sure where to place it. Brilliant performance either way. It's easy for me to criticise.
@blakan311 жыл бұрын
Thats not a requirement for a singer. Sometimes everything counts as an element to add strenght or weakness to a song. Hes just adding identity.... this is too hard to explain. Basically if you play a metronome with ANY proper song you like, you will see how being flawed gives a certain good feeling and etc to the song.
@aarontenor17 жыл бұрын
Hi Cuninni, Well, no I am not a paid apologist for Grigolo. But I do get tired of reading severe critics of great singers. Can you name me one singer in the world that has a better recording of this song in terms of sensitivity musically while also singing with incredible vocal technique and fantastic diction? There aren't any. There are many singers on this youtube thing that are terrible singing this song. You should criticise the ones who need it.
@JoshRossJRO15 жыл бұрын
He's got a great voice, but he focuses too much on Operatic diction and tone..Some of the words are muddled because he wants to sound operatic..He is very talented though and the Bb was great
@chiaranotte14 жыл бұрын
This isn't true. I'm italian, I love opera and I've heard a lot of american and english singers. I've never heard a perfect italian pronunciation. In particular the "t" sound is often strange.
@moh67216 жыл бұрын
Proper technique comes through even with odd movements and walking. In fact, moving around should help with loosening tension. Unfortunately for him, he's not. He's incredible tense. When he hits his top note, look at how strained he looks... he's belting. Which means his airway is very closed. Thats why you hear the inhalations, because when he breathes his airway is constricted. that being said, i love his album, it's too bad he is only good when spliced and edited and post produced.
@johnstanton84993 жыл бұрын
Just enjoy it
@MariaCaIIas14 жыл бұрын
@chiaranotte there is a problem with "t" often... however, I can name quite a few legendary italians messing their language wildly... and getting away with it because of nationality...
@aarontenor17 жыл бұрын
Is that all you can think of saying; that his breathing is bad? Do you think you look smart or clever by adding the phrase in Italian? His breathing is fantastic. That is the best thing he has going for him, especially considering his wasn't in his best voice that night. His breath flows easily. Lots of great opera singers can be heard when they inhale. It is an easy easy correction and displays absolutely nothing in the overall breathing technique level.

"this piece of shit'? he might not as good as the past tenors, but he is definitely can sing and his voice has warmth! God. U should check your brain using MRI scan. i liked his album, his music is good so do his voive, but in this performance he is lame, he is not really singing, its a playback, plus the movement of his lips not same as the song lyrics, it would be better if he sing it standing still better than moving around.... thats what i think
