I was a 13-year-old in the summer of 1997 when the videos of the Butterfly album came out. That was when I started to pay extra attention to Mariah Carey. I will always like Butterfly because the video symbolizes breaking out and finding freedom when you feel trapped. I felt seriously trapped socially at that time because at that age, others at school were always finding excuses to spread rumors about me, and my parents were, to a degree, "parenting too much." It was extremely difficult for me to trust anyone, because society would not allow me to be myself. Things improved during high school, but after graduation, I've only been able to keep in touch with friends online, and it doesn't provide me that same type of feeling that I had during those years. I feel emotional about this video because while my life has improved since then, I still feel socially trapped because it's hard being a 35-year-old single in a world where(from my experience, anyway) seemingly every woman is already with someone, and those who aren't with someone either don't care or they seem to have a desperate mentality. Because of what my life has gone through socially, I will always consider this my favorite music video of all time.

The last 30 seconds of the video are emotional. You can see the pain in Mariah’s eyes. It’s breathtakingly beautiful as the piano plays, yet, so very somber. Mariah wrote this song from Tommy’s point of view. Mariah wanted Tommy to let her go. If it was ‘truly meant to be’, she would return. I believe Mariah lost her youth when she was married to Tommy. She was essentially trapped and wanted to break free like a butterfly. I do believe Mariah cared for Tommy deeply but that all changed after this album came out. It’s very sad how Mariah was treated in the subsequent years after this album was released. Everyone seemed to turn their back on her and they tried to ruin and destroy her. It’s clear that she made the right choice in the end.

Wow, I can't believe she got hate from this song, I grew up in the 2000s I don't really know the drama part of Mariah's life I'm just now uncovering her songs and really enjoying them. I know so many artists that sing break up songs casting shade at their ex, they describe how they got hurt and all that. So I really don't understand the hate this song got. There's no shade being thrown or hate, the song comes from love in the heart, at least to me. It's also from like you said the ex's perspective and the song ends with hope that she will come back to him. Beautiful and poetic telling of complications in a relationship threatens someone's carreer. Everybody turned their backs on Mariah, especially during the early ‘00s, and Tommy was so evil, and vindictive towards Mariah, he did everything he could to decimate her career, told the radios to stop playing her songs, tried to make JLO, a Mariah duplicate, but there’s only one Mariah Carey, and he intentionally butchered up the promo for, Butterfly, and Rainbow, and also rumor has it that My Heart Will Go On was supposed to be given to Mariah but out of spite he gave it to Celine instead, so all of these events and trials led to her 2001 exhaustion, and breakdown, even the public flagged her off in ‘02 with Charmbracelet, but boy I know they wanted to gag themselves in ‘05 when she became the top superstar once again…

Totally true I'm from New Rochelle NY I remember when she moved in with Tommy to a town in upper Westchester county. Yes he was abusive a "control freak" and didn't also want to loose this amazingly talented young beautiful gorgeous woman who was his " cash cow". Genius can mildy describe Mariah's talent; her mother was an Opera singer.
