esteban rada basically Mariah is talking about the trauma of her childhood and the defense mechanism she developed in response to cope "growing numb to the madness, blocking it away" and to move forward "close my eyes, steady my feet on the ground raise my head to the sky" the first part of the song is reflective, sad and depicts how she almost lost herself. The second half of the song is about how her faith and inner strength "woke her up in time" to escape the inner turmoil that was bringing her down. While the lyrics of the second half of the song are positive and uplifting. The song still remains in a melancholy, somber place. For one she states she'll never feel "quite stable". My personal interpretation is that although she's come through those bad times stronger, she's still sad for the little girl in her that had to "grow up too soon" and the scars that will never fully heal. Which is why the song never truly takes an upbeat turn although there's an obvious shift lyrically. Sorry for the long explanation lol hope that helps :)
