The CRAZY thing about Mariah Carey is that if anyone else casually inserted as many runs as she does into their songs, it would sound like they're simply over-singing. However, Mariah's musicality is so intact, her sheer amount of runs is hidden behind the overall phrase of the melody. Basically, she uses the amount of notes she's singing to steer the musical phrase literally any direction she wants without seeming "extra." In turn, she knows she's a technical beast but still chooses to never let that overshadow her words. I just love this woman.
