*It's not like she can't hit her chest voice anymore. I do believe singing on her falsetto mode was her artistic choice and NOT because she can't belt chest voice anymore. This year alone she came back from Asia doing tour here and her supported belts was Eb5 and it was amazing because there's many of pop girlies out there can't even produced a supported C5s in their entire singing career while she's pushing to 50s right now and consistently belting a supported Eb5?! You are so right. Ive been listening to Mariah since her first record, seen her live and I'm a lamb. She has a hard time belting in the upper register of her chest voice. She has to be really well rested and comfortable. The thing with Mariah is you can tell right away in her voice when she is nervous about her performance. I miss that tone so much but she is Mariah Carey, shes done it all already.

I wouldn’t say her vocals are “over done”. She comes out of the 90s R&B category. That’s how you showcased your abilities back then, and she is one of the best. As you said, most do runs and they sound a mess because they don’t know where to go with it rhythmically. Whereas Mariah executes every note decisively. And if she can’t hit it that night the improvisations are iconic.

Mariah was criticized for doing exactly what you said (whispering and hiding flaws) when she did Charmbracelet and then gave us Emancipation with all the belts years later, it’s choice more than incapacity. Mind you when I still believe came out everyone was saying she had lost her voice from all this hissing which was unusual at the time and due to her growing lack of warm up and nodules which actually help create her trademark sound. The ad libs that you refer to as too much are part of the original Brenda K Star song. She didn’t add them.

No surprises that Mariah cannot sing like this anymore. Her songs in the 90s and early 2000s were huge ballads and she sang huge all the time, it took such a toll on her voice that nowadays we have the softer Mariah instead of the belting one. I still love her but people need to realize she sung so hard back in her - what I call "her glory days"
