Being the genius that she is, I think she thought ahead that she'd have to remain in that key for the verse. Maybe it would have been uncomfortably high for her to sustain? What she first sang sounded great but I appreciate that she made that choice for herself.

seems like she is more comfortable to sing some old songs which is recored when her vocal cord is in good health. Probably she can remember the healthy technique on those songs. But for some newer songs, even less difficult, she cannot reach the notes as in the studio, probably she wasn't using the healthy technique when she sang it the first time.

can't reach the highest notes like before, again, just like in case of Whitney Houston, these divas have lost their prime. Whitney was gone, RIP, Mariah's voice is on some level of Whitney, somewhat less powerful, has shown signs of degradation due to over singing and improper care, lacking of healthy lifestyle. Interestingly contrasting is Celine Dion, one of the three divas , is still kicking really good. Celine rarely talks when she does not sing, routinely following strict eating, maintaining rigid lifestyle as manager and husband René Angélil constantly watches.
