Because she was lip syncing since "and maybe I should have just held out a little bit longer" that's the backing track since that part. Mariah is my favourite artist and I love that song but that album and that era were so embarrassed. I only like 5 songs on that album: Cry., #Beautiful, You're Mine, Heavenly and The Art Of Letting Go. She was in one of her worst times of her life. She divorced, she had her sister Alison talking bad about her on media, she gained weight, she had a BAD manager, called Stella that almost destroyed Mariah's career almost 3 years later. By the grace of God Mariah is better now, she started dating Bryan Tanaka (one of her dancers) and she still dating him until today and she released her best studio album tittled Caution in 2018 since E=MC² (2008) and she was lip syncing so much during Me. I Am Mariah era but now she's not lip syncing that much and I'm so glad that she's in a better place now 🦋🙏🏼

The first verse seemed live, everything else was her backing track. This song is very emotive and I know Mariah could've taken it to a whole different level had she sang the entire song live. Vocal flaws and all, a full live of this song would've been everything.
