@@Nightwing-es2wf I don’t know exactly what caused the deterioration in her voice. It may very well be overuse. All I do know is that it is an absolute shame that she lost the extraordinary voice that she possessed in the early ‘90s. She was incredible back then.

@@a32tl well she still has her voice but it just naturally went deeper with age, however it’s not as easy for her to hit those notes anymore due to her overuse. if you think about it, her voice has been working nonstop even before she debuted when she was still a backup singer. While she was recording albums she was also doing live performances and tours. Her voice is still there but it’s less likely to be back like it used to cause it hasn’t had a proper break in 30+ years.

Her voice sounded raspy since the beginning of the performance because she was sick. There were some pitchy and flat notes here and there. Her belts mostly sounded tense. She was quite under the weather during this performance, and growling helped her reach the higher belts better and clear her throat. Her Arsenio Hall and Des O'Connor performances were miles better because she was healthy during those performances. Nonetheless, this was an outstanding performance!

This is why, when people say “the next Mariah Carey” it’s annoying. She is literally a once in a lifetime generational talent. Just because someone hits a whistle note they are not the next mc. It’s how she transitions seamlessly through her ranges, how they convey the “emotions” of the songs, and the fact she is always on melody and pitch. Girls who try to do Melisma don’t do it effectively like her and Whitney and many others, this is why they sound bad and like they’re over singing. Mariah mastered transition through her ranges without detracting from her songs. You can sing a long to most any of her songs even when she goes for a run or something. Brandy and Whitney are the same, impeccable tone and pitch. The gift of melody.
