The apples aren't frozen. The actually get closed in a special chamber where they remove all the oxygen. That way they remove all the factors that would cause the apples to decay. Preserving them this way, the apples can last for at least 2 years.

Sweet potatoes is the only vegetable I fell in love with when I moved to South America. After that I returned to Slovenia for 2 years and I saw it in the store (when I was growing up in Yugoslavia I don’t think it was available anywhere) but it was very expensive because it was imported from USA. I asked around and someone told me that they tried to grow it locally, but it didn’t grow well. I miss the variety, quality and prices of fruits and vegetables that are available in Slovenia. Uruguay is not as bad as USA, but is not great either. I shop at a weekly farmer’s market or sometimes at the specialized fruits&vegetable shops because the prices in the supermarkets are just crazy. Supermarkets in Slovenia have a good selection and a reasonable price. The trick of course is to follow the seasons and not buy the off season stuff because that usually means those are imported (or from a storage) and that means not as fresh and more expensive.

At the end of March I planted three fruit trees called Indian bananas or Asiminas. They taste like banana, mango and ananas all in one. They're fruit trees which are perfect for our climate because indians had them in your US of A up north. Now they're slowly getting popular here. I wish I knew sooner about them, because it takes time to wait for them to grow. I always wondered why people in the southern hemisphere or near the equator have the luxury of growing so many different exotic fruits and we have just apples and so on, but two years ago I found out we also have the equivalent of a fruit that tastes like a banana, mango and ananas, for our climate here and it's these fruit trees, Asiminas/Indian bananas (however they don't look like a banana, they just taste like one). To taste the first fruits I'll have to wait 4-7 years for these babies to grow up. I think this fruit in a few years will also become known and popular here and sold in stores, because people are slowly finding out about Asiminas and are planting them. Then for example you also have an equivalent to American blueberries (which require acidic soil to grow in), they are called Haskap (comes from the Japanese word Hasukapu) or Lonicera Chamchatica, but they're mostly known under the name of Siberian blueberries and they don't require acidic soil, so they're much easier to plant in your backyard. It takes eight years for an American blueberry bush to give its full yield, which is 8-12 kg to a bush, compared to 4-5 years that Haskap needs to give full yiled, which is 3-6 kg to a bush. They're also known as May berries (because they're all-ready ripe in May) or the berries of eternal youth. They are not round like American blueberries but more like a cigar like shape, but they have the same color (and of course lots of healthy minerals and vitamins and other stuff). So we can look forward to have these fruits also in the stores one day here in Slovenia when they get more popular and the wider public finds out about them.

I like my apples slightly soft to the touch with strong aroma. I plan to eat them that day or the next. Eating hard apples is like eating turnips. I don't care for it. I love beets, and not just the below ground part. I also always use the leaves. Great source of vitamins and minerals. One interesting thing about parsley, it's natural mouth wash. Chewing on a sprig of it will remove mouth odors. Good if you just ate out, and had garlic or onion prepared food. My favorite Summer lunch remains BLT or CLT (cucumber, lettuce, and tomato). Good bread and good mayo are essential. I make my own mayo and bake my own bread. Yes, I have my garden full of veggies I love... It's worth it.

Apples are not frozen, if you have apples at home they can last for 5 months in a proper basement. Fruit farmers have specialized "basements" where the temperature, humidity and ripening gases (that are naturally in 90% of the fruit) are controled. So it is a natural way to make fruit last longer. It's true the vitamin levels drop but they are still healthy. Drugače pa super video ❤️

Apples are naturally waxy. The apple is one of the fruits that produces its own wax. Hofer does the best avocado's, albeit, smaller than the Cali ones (as you know). I also love Beetroot's taste/color. The best tomatoes you can buy are the very red, juicy Lust variety, also sold in Hofer, although for some reason, they are more expensive than the same Lust in Mercator. The parsley you are talking about in California is the curly parsley which in England we only use for plate decoration in restaurants usually. The parsley is flat leaf parsley much better flavour that I use in everything. I just wished they had a better selection of herbs here...I miss cilantro and melissa as well as tarragon.

Apples have natural mechanism of protection from getting dry which makes their skin waxy. This natural wax protects further drying of an apple under stress conditions (not being stored properly). How waxy they get depends on the apple sort. Some sorts get waxy faster and more than others. As far as I know, nobody treats apples with wax. Apples which feel waxed are all good, only a bit stressed.
@mickakovaceva15 жыл бұрын
Apples are stored at app. 4C (so not frozen) under controlled atmosphere so all their natural ripening processes are stopped or minimised. Therefore, you can get apples in stores all year long, otherwise they would have been available only until December of the same year in a good quality. Freezing would turn apples into apple mash. Bad apples in stores are over-rippen apples. I hope this comment will help to increase the understanding of how apples are stored and what buyers get in markets to all viewers.
