”A longing for belonging. Soft Moon EP was made during a few days in late January when the world was dark and still. I had just mentally let go of my October album-release Love Everything and a new year had begun. And like the story goes, saying goodbye to one thing opens the gate for something new to pour in.
While listening to Sade and Mark Hollis,, reading Ursula K. Le Guin´s Earthsea-novels and taking evening strolls in the forgiving nature around my cabin, the necessity came to write a few simple piano-based songs. Around that the music evolved, towards the pale light of the moon. But just like the moon is all alone in a dark sea dotted with stars, a thin flicker appeared in me. The mix of solitude and longing for others. Or being among people, still feeling lonely.” // Mariam Wallentin, March 2018
Soft Moon EP is the second EP in Mariam´s instant creativity -series, a follow up to The Wind EP (Repeat Until Death, 2014). As a way to record and spontaneously create in-between full-length albums, to keep the mind curious and the music brave. Like Wallentin puts it: "Instead of following the sometimes ridgid patterns of the music-industry, the rythm of the heart should take the lead."
In addition to her solo work as Mariam The Believer, Wallentin is one half of vocal-and-drum-duo Wildbirds & Peacedrums. She is also a founding member and composer in the big band mayhem that is
Fire! Orchestra. With musical roots partly in improvisation, partly in pop and soul, her career path has crossed diverse musical territories - from choir compositions, drum circles, free form jazz constellations to a lead part in a modern opera by Ben Frost. Equipped with her courageously uncompromising approach to music-making Wallentin started Mariam the Believer to focus her expression into a pop project. And two full-length albums has been released by MTB so far; Blood Donation (2014, Moshi Moshi) and Love Everything (2017, Repeat Until Death).
On releasing her self-written and produced music via her own imprint Repeat Until Death, Wallentin says: “Music is a sacred place where all dimensions of me can exist simultaneously. I have a will not to be reduced but to be set free.”
