WOW. I just fell in love with Caput Mortum after trying your tutorial. My peony came out looking like one big red mess, but Caput Mortum color sets everything off. My Quin Red looks different than yours, so I tried Carmine. Another beautiful color for flowers. Every manufacturer uses different pigments with the same name, so it can get overwhelming. I was jus surprised to see Caput Mortum in my Sennelier set and had to try it out.
@mariamorjane7 жыл бұрын
Hi Bethany, thank you so much for your comment. Caput mortum violet is one of my favorite pigments right now and I use it/abuse it haha but yes, different companies create different shades of quin red etc but you don't have to match any of my colors, as long as you like the ones you have.. you can use here any pink or red, and caput m.v. is a great addition to those no matter how pink or red your pigment is :)

I’m hoping your Patreon site provides some information on painting on hot press. You make it look easy, but it’s very different from cold press, and frustrating for a lot of people. I’m pretty good at cold press, but hot press has been disappointing. I’m definitely interested in joining, but I’ll wait until the start of the month because I know Patreon charges that way. As everyone has already said, your work is beautiful.
@mariamorjane Жыл бұрын
Hi Anne, thank you for inquiring about my classes. Just fyi, Patreon charges you on the date you join, and then 30 days from the day you joined. If you join March 15th, next month you will be charged is on April 15th (not on the 1st) Each Patreon creator has it set up differently. Also, these peonies are a very old video of mine. This would a real time video from maybe 2017. Today, I have detailed classes on Patreon, and VoiceOver tutorials. Here's an index to Patreon's tutorials and classes. Www.mariamorjane.com/patreon.html I started painting with watercolors on Hot Pressed - then in 2017 I started painting on Cold Pressed and Rough. In my humble opinion, Hot pressed is not good for beginners because there's no texture. You are forced to work on details. Cold Pressed, or rough are the forgiving papers. Much easier to learn how to paint on. Hot pressed dries 10X faster than CP or Rough. And to be honest, in my opinion, watercolors look much better on Cold pressed or rough, with texture.
@annewatman677 Жыл бұрын
@@mariamorjane Thank you for responding so quickly. I was taking a course on Domestika, and that particular one used Hot Press. I found myself really disliking my results, and quickly lost interest. Now, unfortunately, I have a block of Fabriano hot press that I’ll probably never use. Oh well. I paint with watercolor as a hobby, and because it’s fun, and the colors are beautiful. If it’s not fun, then what’s the point. I happen to have plenty of cold press! Thanks for letting me know about Patreon. I thought they had changed to the starting date being the date a customer signs up, but it’s not clearly stated anywhere. I don’t do as much painting during the summer because I don’t have the time, so I’m going to sign up now, while I can get in at least a month or two.
@mariamorjane Жыл бұрын
Hi Anne, you are very welcome. Patreon offers this option to some Patron creators only, so that's why with some other creators - you may still see that everyone no matter when they join - get charged on the 1st. Yes, I totally understand about Hot Pressed... It was my first watercolor paper ever. But, after years and years of teaching how to paint with watercolors, I know that this is NOT the right paper for the beginners. I was just mentioning this to a friend who's my student too, you have to be careful out there. There's a lot of unexperienced watercolor teachers out there, and even tho their works may attract someone, that person doesn't necessarily understand watercolors, techniques, and it's not only easy to pick up on their bad habits, but also, it may be hard to get honest opinions about papers and what's best for a beginner. It was during the pandemic, 2020-2021, when the most creators ever joined Patreon. There's a lot of articles about this on the internet. Anyways, I hope to see you there, if not, I wish you all the best and I hope you will enjoy painting on Cold Pressed 🤗🌹

Maria, is there a brand of watercolor paint you prefer over another? and if so why?. I cannot belive you are self taught and only been painting watercolor since 2012. beautiful work. If I can suggest something to think about and experiment with. I thought to myself what would happen if I painted a watercolor using the old flemish technique of doing a grisaille first, I did it using sepia and paynes grey as a underpainting color. The results will amaze you.
@mariamorjane7 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, thank you so much!! that's really flattering :) I prefer using watercolors out of tubes, that really makes a difference in my opinion. I'm still testing out different watercolor brands but will be sharing some more of that soon on my channel :) I don't think I have ever seen the old flemish technique, it sounds really interesting. I am going to have to check it out as I like exploring new things :) thank you so much!
@mariamorjane7 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, thank you so much, I did look up the painter and I couldn't figure out how he does the background but then I thought to myself.. this is actually similar to my style of painting... because when I paint animals, I always create dark background first and then work with white gouache to bring out the light, I often mix white gouache with other colors so I have these opaque lighter colors over darks.. instead of creating a background: sepia, payne's gray, I do that on the actual animal .I looked up the grisaille technique and it works when painting with opaque watercolors (gouache) thank you so much for your comments. Btw whenever theres a link or names mentioned in comments, it gets flagged so these comments don't get posted but I still saw and read it. thank you!

Thanks so much! Such a wonderful tutorial. I have never used gouache before. Instead of gouche could I just use the lifting up technique or masking for the white? One other question I had is does gouache white make the colours duller or the painting dull overall? Can we retain the transparancy of water colours even after using gouache over it?
@mariamorjane7 жыл бұрын
Hi :) In this video I haven't used any gouache, it's just transparent watercolors: quinacridone red and caput mortum violet. But in general I do use sometimes designer's gouache - color permanent white which is an opaque watercolor. It depends on a video you are refering to. In some like "Watercolor jellyfish" you don't have to use an opaque white like I do but just like you said, you can lift up the colors or use regular transparent watercolor white. I don't think the opaque watercolor white I use (designer's gouache) would make colors dull. It's definitely creamy, cloudy like watercolor. If you paint one of my night scenes with Milky Ways or "Watercolor Northern Lights" you may need an opaque watercolor for the Milky Way part but I have a video where I just lift up the sky and didn't use it. There's ways around it. You can still have the transparency of watercolors even after using designers gouache white, it all depends on how much you are using. And basically yes, if you don't have it you can lift up the colors, the effects are going to be different but you will get your result either way :)

Maria Raczynska Thanks ever so much for taking the time to clear my doubts on gauche. I love your videos and the way you teach. I'm going to try the peonies but using whatever colours I have. will let you know the results!

I was just wondering what the difference was between water color colored pencils and regular water colors. Thank you.

Hi Lauren, with watercolors (in tubes or pans) you need a brush to paint with. And watercolor pencils - imagine regular pencils/crayons but you can use water with them, so once you draw with these watercolor pencils you can use a brush to go over the areas. I have painted with watercolor pencils before, I will try to make a tutorial on that :)

I'm wondering there was a garden in the painter's heart... otherwise, how could the flower be drawn so smoothly?
