The Marianne Gorge located in Blanchisseuse is one of the more popular hiking destinations. Most Hike groups usually visit the nearby Sapphire Waterfall and the Marianne Gorge in one excursion.
Getting to this gorge is very easy, you just follow the river upstream from where you park and you will eventually meet the rock formations and the deep pool. Its the perfect place to relax.
For the more adventorous ones, we swim through the gorge, emerge on the other side and then what follows is two hours of walking through ankle to neck height water as we make our way upstream.
There are several other gorges, some bigger some smaller and some full of debris and fallen plant matter to make you wonder what is hiding below. In some places you are swiming through fallen leaves and branches.
The walk upriver is scenic and beautiful though and is very refreshing.
The first waterfall you will meet is a small one, perfect for pictures and to refresh. After that back to the trek.
The second waterfall you will meet requires a climb to the top of some rocks and there, it falls vertically into the pool below. Again, a perfect spot for pictures.
To get to the the third waterfall you have to climb the mountain, guides should ensure they have alot of ropes to act as hand holds as a fall from there will cause injury or death.
You emerge on some rocks, then there is a ten feet drop to a ledge and you are on top of the third waterfall, the pool is deep enough for the more adventorous to jump into. Infact the only way down to the pool..is to jump.And you have to climb back up the same waterfall and mountain to head back out.
This hike is one you need to have a proper guide for, and proper safety gear because its alot of cold water and swiming.
