Trinidad and Tobago is an oil and gas economy and given recent global trends, I just felt that they were not well positioned to deal with the coming contractions in the global energy market.

When I lived in Trinidad life was hard. After graduating from university I found work in a bank that paid so little I wasn’t able to move out of my parents home. I was so frustrated because there was no opportunities without links and the cost of living rose year on year while salaries stayed the same. As much as I love Trinidad, I had no choice but to leave if wanted a better life. I moved to the U.K. in 2019 and I was the best decision I’ve made. I’m not going to lie, it was hard at first because I had to work at the entry level and London is expensive. Regardless, I was grateful for the job opportunity. 2 years later I got promoted 3 times and I am very very comfortable financially and looking at buying my 1st home.

My family and I moved to Canada in 1990 and I still remember that day like it was yesterday. My parents were retired primary school teachers, my dad was a primary school principal, I was fresh out of secondary school. My sister had a job at the TDSB and my brother was going to college on a student visa. I eventually went to college, I did Early Childhood Education and then Travel Counselling. I worked for a while in Travel, but when things took a downward turn, I was one of the many casualties due to downsizing. Today I work as an Industrial Cleaner. I love visiting my family in T&T and I love spending time in Tobago (great place to decompress and the beaches are pristine). I would like to eventually go back to Trinidad and Tobago once I retire, because the winters here are brutal at times and who wants to be stuck inside for 3 or 4 months a year?

Hey fellow Trini here too 🙌🏽 🇹🇹 (I’m born in London but lived Trini from 6-14 yrs of age) I love sweet T&T, and had the best upbringing there. It is a shame the state of the economy in Trinidad and it seems even back then, you called it right with Venezuela’s economic crisis too. I’m settled here in Scotland for a decade now and hope one day to retire partially between sweet T&T and Scotland, so I pray that our islands economic issues change for the better, especially for our Trini’s actually living there now 🙏🏽❤️

And in my decades on this Earth, I’ve travelled to some amazing countries, met some wonderful people, from lovely cultures, but no where as AMAZING as sweet T&T. I am from Trinidad and I do not want to diss this country but I am looking to leave as well because this country is full of crime for a small population of 1.3 million and the cost of living is like insanely high for instance a large Starbucks drink cost 42 ttd while in the US it's only 5 bucks and a family size pizza at hut cost 100-300 ttd while that only cost 20 bucks in the us, cheese cost 45 ttd while in Canada 10 dollars skinless breast cost 45 ttd while in USA 5 bucks for the most.

As a Entrepunuer Living here In Trinidad and Tobago, most of my business is out the country... Our island is anti SMALL business, but welcomes big business or international interests as long as its alligned with the corrupted politics. We have so much potential but we lose talent every year because we don't appriciate our own due to the goverenment agenda also to be frank, racism and tribalism. Recently they sold petrotrin and its a mess because it was sold to be sold again to someone who is the prime ministers friend *allegedly* Currently myself and my business partners are tying to start up something major in our island but smh.. tbh If it wasnt for that i would of been gone already cause this place sickens me to my core and soul.... People, this is a Trinidadian speaking about Trinidad and Trinidadians as "they" and "them"...this is self-hatred that you are seeing. He does not view himself as a Trini. He is not a man who can create opportunity, he has to attach himself to opportunities that already exits. I too packed myself up sir, and moved to TnT from USA. All I see is opportunity...and a chance for my son to NOT be discriminated against...or shot by the racist police because he is black, 6'5" and just a teen...glad you are happy where you are but your country is not a host, it is your homeland and needs solidarity, commitment and a return of its talent that leaves to "pursue opportunity"...just stupid.

Politicians likes to make the idea of income inequality a problem when it's a natural by product of a free society. History has shown us that a country can either have unequal distribution wealth or equal poverty for all. Every attempt to "fix" the wealth distribution has lead to the economic collapse. The issue with Trinidad is really not the lost or lack of natural oil or natural gas. The really reason for you leaving Trinidad. It's the crime In the country, always looking over your shoulder all the time. locking up your home and car with bars and alarms. Your curfew starts when the sun goes down. Please be fair and don't blame the lost of natural resources for your leaving. If Trinidad was that bad? All my friends and family will be asking for sponsor ships jumping on Planes and coming to Canada in droves. I live Canada since I was 5 yrs old and I go every year to Visit my mom and dad who retired back in T&T. 5 years now. So please do not give and impression that you left for that reason. Just say you left for a better life for you and family.
@BrookPotterUk
@BrookPotterUk 6 жыл бұрын
The rising crime situation is the result of the weaker economy. It is one of many byproducts of what I discussed in the video. None of that changes that fact that the root of all the problems comes from the shift in the global energy markets and the inability of the Trinidad and Tobago economy to adapt to the changing markets.

I left Trinidad when I was about 17 years old. My mother decided to send me to Canada, I already had an uncle and aunt living out there. I was born and grew up in Couva, county Caroni. I understood very well why my mother shipped me out to Canada. I was by nature a trouble maker, of the worse type. I use to get up to some real nastiness. One time I remembered, down by railway road Couva, pushing my little step brother Johnnie, into the biggest picka-bush I ever seen. He was only about 7 at the time. Talk about bawl, he was bawling all the way to De Gannes street. I was born wicked. In a way, after all those years living in Canada, I still retained that wickedness. I am grateful I had the opportunity to leave Trinidad, especially Couva, so many narrow-minded, small-village people. The only time I miss Trinidad is when it's wintertime in Canada.

Nice video Brook. The strategy seems to be hunker down, be fiscally "responsible", protect the TT$ and wait it out. Unfortunately I've been saying that fossil energy rentier economies like TT's should not expect 'more of the same' - there'll be no sustained future price rise (barring war..). Unfortunately, textbook diversification strategy in rentier economies DON'T WORK. Game over.

I think it has its pros and cons. I miss the laid back, family oriented way Trinidad is. I’m half Trini on my dads side (English mother) and when I go to Trinidad, even though I’m born in the U.K, I always feel a sense of ‘being at home’, in Trinidad ☺️My kids absolutely love Trinidad, the culture and the food plus enjoy spending time with my dads family out there. Yes we may have access to more money living and earning in the U.K. and nicer material things…..but to me Trinidad has a warm, friendly, loving vibe, that can’t be replicated anywhere else and will always be seen as home to me 🇹🇹🥰 God willing it’s where I will retire 🙏🏽

I do not hate you, nor am i coming here to attack the valid points you made about the country. Your opinion is yours and goodluck out there.. its easy to list the problems that exist in a small society like ours and even easier to come up with solutions "on paper." However, what is anyone doing to solve these problems? For some reason people seem to think that a mixed economy means that the government does everything for the people and they are entitled to everything. With that being said thanks for listing the problems AGAIN but what we need right now is a revolution, a total upheaval of the political and economic systems because they have not worked continuously for 55 years. People that tuned in to watch this video either persecuted you or agreed. But no one is willing to go the distance to change internal affairs, typical Trinis talk talk talk. Unless anyone here is working towards doing so save your time. Dont bother to comment.

@BrookPotterUk

Alpha581 anything is possible. What lead to Venezuela's collapse was government price controls over foreign currency, the destruction of private property rights and the printing of money leading to hyper inflation. Any country, that follows these steps will have a crisis.

Well for the last year and a half or so the Government through the banks have taken steps to restrict access of citizens to foreign cash (especially US$). In addition the Government is pushing hard to implement anti-privacy legislation including a harsh property tax structure and a Revenue Agency which many observers/experts are suggesting could open up a whole world of corrupt practices. In adiition the availability of resources can become an issue with the uncontrolled influx of people from other islands, Africa, China and lately Venezuela.

I think you made a smart move! You are taking a proactive rather than a reactive approach. You were able to objectively review an research the factors that keep Trinidad & Tobago financially sound. I agree with you, partnering with Venezuela, while they are on the verge of collapse, is not the most advantageous move for Trinidad & Tobago to make, considering their own financial stability. If anything, T&T, should align themselves with a country that is in a position that could shore them up "fiscally" should the need arises.
@BrookPotterUk

Thank you for your feedback. Trinidad and Tobago need to start thinking outside the box. It's even more grim now given a potential economic collapse in China, that could result in a world wide slow down, and drop the demand for oil even further.

@@BrookPotterUk China is position all over the country world especially in Africa, they have bought land in every country. China is very discipline and consistent. They are also good savers and copy cats along with helping each other. Gun violence is low but natural disasters are high collateral counts. Trinidad needs to get classy and sharp, great roads, water supply, environmental healthy, rapid Transit, rebuilt port of Spain, underground utilities, excellent drainage systems, and energy efficient housings, pride in landscaping and trash pickup. The politicians are weak and self serving. Just my disappointment.

Brook, you leave the T&T frying pan and walk right into a hard Brexit, bro! Plus you forgot that geopolitics can drive oil prices in EITHER direction. And, you are also forgetting about the impact of the US dollar on oil prices. Yes, the long term trend/outlook for oil prices is down BUT that will only happen over many years because the world is hooked on oil. Look at the price of oil today, man! You jumped too fast.

Since then, trinidad growth has slowed, petrotrin had to be sold, the energy sector has been in decline, globally not that long ago west texas crude prices went negative and now Guyana is coming online to bring even more oil to the market. I'd say not bad for a forecast from 2016 that's been right for almost 6 years. The downward trend has been temporarily interupted now, due to a conflict that no one saw coming in 2016. None the less, thanks for watching.
