At 11am the next morning, on 16 October 1793, the executioner Sanson appeared. Marie Antoinette, clad in simple white so different from her signature powder-blue silks and satins, accidentally stepped on Sanson’s foot.
She whispered to the man:“Pardon me sir, I didn’t mean to.”
Those were her last words.After the blade fell, the insensitive executioner, who had shortly beforehand cut off and pocketed locks of her hair, to be later sold for profit - held up her head to the roaring crowd, which shouted “Vive la République!”

History has had plenty of young monarchs, including those who were monarchs before they were born. Yet many of these, such as Peter the Great and Maria II were successful, so blaming their age is not an excuse particularly since they were well into their adulthood when the revolution occurred.

When it came to the government of France at the time Louis and Marie had little power. They may suggest a change to something such as a tax law but they could not force it through the government. I wouldn't say it was the peasant populace that lashed out it was the political parties and governmental persons who acted out. The peasant populace, whom most were just trying to make a living, had very little impact in what happened in the revolution. The years during this time is called the reign of terror for a reason. Most of the people who died in the revolution were not the wealthy. When it comes to kids on the throne there is always the eventuality of them being manipulated by their parentage, those close to them and those with powerful positions. The biggest examples are the child emperors of late han dynasty and in the case of Louis and Marie.

I always was fascinated with Marie's story, and felt bad for two young people who lived, grew to love and actually like each other. It was a very tragic, and sad end. I admired her how she never broke and kept her dignity. I'm glad your online art purchase turned out well, it could of ended...ummm...badly. Sorry but I don’t blame the French peasants for what happened. I blame the aristocracy who hoarded money and supplies from them for decades prior to the Revolution. I don’t agree with murder, but the rich murdered plenty of the poor prior to that. If you make your bed, you will lay in it.

Only saw this video today, but I wanted to say you are absolutely right! As an historian who has focused much of my work on this period, I have directly witnessed how the horrors of the French Revolution have been downplayed by those whose ideologies are more important to them than the truth. There has never been perfect government and some of the greatest evils have come at the hands of those who claimed to be doing it for "equality". Life doesn't happen in a vacuum and, oddly enough, in many cases kings and queens had less power than the nobles and wealthy surrounding them. Louis XVI and Marie are by NO means anywhere near the top of the list when it comes to terrible rulers. Their missteps were made out of youth and trying to please so many fronts. It is ironic that such a great deal of France's financial problems came from helping the American colonists in THEIR revolution. As for Marie, it is a myth that she lived excessively beyond what would've been standard for all European royalty at the time, especially in the halls of Versailles. In fact, in one of her earliest letters she expresses discomfort with the lavish excesses of the French court and it was only after being told that she should "act French" (in so many words) that she acted so. While it would be grotesque to believe that the peasantry should have accepted their suffering with grace, it is also true that they were easily manipulated by those with ulterior motives. The narrator is absolutely correct when he says that the second estate and those in the merchant class, were actively seeking to discredit and destroy Marie's reputation, knowing that Louis was often influenced by her and he was easily swayed to their interests when she was out of the picture. They DID attempt to change the tax system, to which the response was basically, "Good luck trying to get it". Many of these men wound up quietly backing revolutionaries, like Robespierre, believing they would control a civil government. Unfortunately for them, it wouldn't be long before they lost their heads as well. Barely a year after the King and Queen, Robespierre himself wound up meeting "Madame le Guillotine". The terrible bloodshed and tyranny that passed for "Fraternité, liberté, egalité" in France is often dismissed as unimportant in the "struggle for social progress" or outright ignored altogether. The inconvenient fact that the terror didn't lead to a lasting democratic government, but to Napoleon and more monarchy, is likewise dismissed. History is filled with benevolent and evil rulers. Louis and Marie were neither saints, nor monsters, but they were far more good than bad. They weren't indifferent towards the suffering of the people, just unable to deal effectively with problems that had been building before they were even born. Neither of them deserved to be executed and by descending to mob rule, it prolonged the transition to effective democracy and only increased the suffering of the people it claimed to be representing 🤷‍♀️.

I've visited both the place of her birth and place of her death. Her mother was far more interesting and influential of the two, but Marie gets way more attention in history. I would love Oddie to tell her story.

When you said that she kissed the pages of the letter to her sister, I was gutted. The behavior of the peasants shows us that society hasn’t advanced much. None of us choose of whom we are born to, yet so much anger and resentment towards other is still alive and well. They cheered her slaughter because of who they are, not because of who she was. We can see why gossip is so heavily frowned upon in the Bible.

So my first knowledge of the Queen was from the novel, "Marie Antoinette" by Stefan Zweig. I read the novel about 50 years ago, and have been fascinated with her ever since. She had her faults, but was courageous, and even gracious in rotten circumstances. And you truly have a gift, sir. Thank you again.

When I was in school I did a book report on Marie Antonette. I was probably too young and disinterested to understand all of the political implications of the time but I did feel sorry for her. It was such a dark period. When the free flow of truthful information is blocked it is possible to cause people to believe almost anything especially when things are going badly for the working people. Marie had no control over her own life at any time. She was just a pawn for the royal family that ruled throughout Europe. Her duty was to produce an heir. That was it. She was also a scapegoat used by the people who wanted to take power. You don’t have to be a royal to have bad intentions. I read that the son of the King and Queen was tortured until he would say whatever they told him to say. Probably the death sentence that the Queen heard was a relief to her after the torture she had endured for months. I cannot imagine knowing the torment that her children had gone through before their deaths. The French Revolution was a travesty. A brutal, bloody travesty. The French did not give that much money to the American Revolution. The major problem for the royals were themselves. They could have saved themselves by changing the tax system and giving aid during a food shortage. Instead they chose to hang on to their royal pocketbooks. It was not enough for these bitter people to murder the royal family. They murdered many thousands, not only royals, but also aristocrats without royal blood, and also anyone who appeared to have money. The poor were used as a means to destroy the system by the evil people behind all of it. The Catholic Church is always behind bloodshed in Europe. The poor were used to promote violence just as they are being used today through lies that are told. Revisionist history and lying propaganda are tools for the revolutionaries of today just as they were back then. Incite the poor and make them blame everything on whoever is in power. That is the major method for starting a revolution. While I have never agreed with the royal system I have never agreed with the bloody revolutions that removed them from power either. However, I still believe that the Brits are out of their minds for allowing a “royal” family to live as though they are millionaires and so much better but than the common people! They actually bow to these people!! The west has developed a new royal system, it seems. The corporate overlords now rule everything these days. They finance the multimillion dollar campaigns of the political puppets that they have chosen to do their bidding within the government. The people no longer have input. That is why millions of jobs have been taken from the working people of the west and given to communist China! All the while the people of the countries of the west are losing their liberties. There are no labor laws or environmental regulations in that communist regime. China is the number one most polluted country in the world but the bought out corporate owned media will not tell you about that. Who do you think owns the major stock options of those huge corporations?? The very global elites that have become astronomically wealthy through the globalization scam! The Brits hold on to their do nothing royals and let them live like kings and queens just because of their supposed bloodline. That is insane and yet insanity seems to rule the minds of so many today. So many European Revolutions were begun by people with evil motives. Others desired the power for themselves. The Russian Revolution being a perfect example. It seems to me that the French Revolution was brought on by people who were also power hungry. People hungry for food who watch their children starving to death can be easily impressed by gossip meant to demean the present leadership. It was and is still a successful strategy for revolution by the even more wicked who want that power.

Thank you so much Mr. Oddie for doing this historical feature. I always get excited for any new content you release! I have such a complicated relationship with Marie Antoinette. On one hand, she really had no idea what she was getting in to. She was just a child who only knew the life of royalty, constantly being observed and scrutinized by everyone around her. But at the same time, as she grew older and held more influence throughout France, she should have wizened up and listened to the people's needs instead of frivolously frittering away money. In the end, I have so much sympathy for her. I feel like she tried to do the best she could, even though the odds were stacked against her.

I've read a lot about Marie Antoinette but learned even more here, particularly about people trying to help her. What I find painful about her story, as with so many others, is how once again a woman is to blame for the downfall of whatever. Things haven't changed and I truly fear they will not regardless of movements etc.

They did use DNA from a lock of her hair (not sure if it was that sample) to confirm that the heart taken from her son after death was actually his. That heart had quite a history to it as well. There's an AWESOME biography of that artist on Curiosity Stream! YOU HAVE A PAINTING OF HERS?????!!!!!

Oh cool, I didn't know about that. Well the picture (pastel) is from her (Marie Antoinette) official court painter, Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun, who is very famous. So I'm very happy it came to me! :)

Apart from the fact I love your soothing voice and captivating storytelling skills, you just corrected all the errors i was taught at school ( decades ago🤦‍♀️) and showed a totally different image of the one I had previously known. The fact that her own family and the rich French were the actual cause of this young couples downfall is beyond sad. Imagine what they would have achieved if they were allowed to implement the changes they wanted? They were too forward thinking for their time. I’m Obsessed with the Royal Family of France (formerly) from Louis XIV on. Would Love you to do a Feature about Louis XIV! His childhood in Paris to what he created at Versailles is fascinating to me. 7 years ago I took a trip to London England and Paris France and I didn’t go to Versailles because we had to rush to the hotel and get ready for a Dinner cruise, and we were to be picked up from the hotel and they didn’t show up. ☹️! I’m going back so I can see Versailles and a restaurant on Rue Mouffetard named Le Mouffetard, the best meals I’ve ever had!

This was another great video! I can see both sympathy and why the French citizens would find reasons to hate her, or maybe mostly her lifestyle during a period of such hardship. I really loved the Movie Marie Antoinette starring Kirsten Dunst. How accurate? I don’t know. And isn’t A Tale of Two Cities by Dickens also reference some of Marie Antoinette and King Louie XVI lives? Maybe not. I read the book in High School, and though I really enjoyed the old movie based on Dickens classic, who knows. Anyways, enough of my babbling. Great video, great job, and looking forward to next one!!

I always thought she got a raw deal from the start, and that business of removing everything Austrian from her on that island…including her dog, and replacing it all with the French style was purely barbaric. To arrive at an already failing court with not a single friend from home must have been truly awful. I feel you have done her justice in this piece. Oddie you continue to outdo yourself which is no easy task as your videos are always of the highest quality and are sophisticated works of art. I believe this might be your finest work in my opinion. There’s something very special about these videos. Perhaps it’s the uniqueness of them along with the passion and careful planning which they are created. I just can’t say enough because there’s no channel on KZbin that comes close. I agree with your sentiments about Marie Antoinette. Her life was tragic and heartbreaking. She was flawed like the rest of us but there was also a great deal of good in her heart. It appears that she was a loving mother. She never had a say in her life. It’s unfair to think we’d have lived any differently than she had we been born under the same circumstances. Thank you for a fantastic video once again Oddie!
