A functional family would not be very funny. Thing of the Cleavers. The comedy arose from Weaver's shenanigans. Which were amusing. If it had been an ensemble comedy about that perfect little family, I don't think it would have been funny at all.

That's the point of his character. He's meant to be a weak-willed spineless man so men in real life can say "at least I'm not as bad as that," and feel better about themselves. The actor, Ray Romano, said he was surprised and disappointed when fans said they considered Ray a great husband. Hell, even in these comments section, you'll see people defending Ray simply because he provides financially for the family.

Yes in the episode where one of the twins wrote a book called “The Angry Family” and the whole family sat in on a session with the teachers/ counselors. Frank was the one who said it was Marie who couldn’t deal with Raymond Marrying Debra . 😡

​@@jonnyglen9934I feel like protecting her son was an excuse, she was threatened by Debra because Debra saw through her and Marie knew it and she was not only afraid of losing ray to her but her whole family to Debra. Remember in an episode when they all had to go before the priest after the twins write the angry family. Marie says they always blame the family which is partially true because that is what Dr. Freud did. However, all narcs both men and women fear therapists. Because in my uncle's case, he fears his kids going to therapy and a common fear abusive parents have is "they always blame the father/mother." They don't care about the mental welfare of their family and all narcs fear people like Debra who will stand up to them and hold them accountable. Once the accountability kicks in, the narc fears the people they hurt will leave them and be forgotten and being forgotten and left behind is a narcs worst nightmare and we can see that with Marie. In the show I thought it was frank who was abusive but it was actually Marie because he protects Debra from Marie several times. All narcs fear the people they can't control and they also have a fear that the people they do control will realize what's going on and then stand up to them and then leave them. Parents need to realize that children are not property and they need to realize this before they end up in a cheap nursing home.

His mother was a lot like Marie controlling, manipulative, and condescending, needless to say I didn’t marry him the thought of putting up with a man/ child who can’t speak for himself so I broke it off with him and I moved on with my life.

I feel like Debra stormed out of the house in 2005 and never went back. Because she was never going to win against Marie. She married her divorce lawyer who likes her cooking and lost his mother when he was twelve. They are mostly happy. Ray and his sons don't understand why she left. his daughter and brother understands.

The mother would of had a heart attack, and Debra would move out of state with the kids. Ouch. As for the ol man. He would of laughed it off until it sunk in that his wife is dead, then he would of just withered away, and poor ol, Ray ray would of become an alcoholic, and lose his job, if not off himself later.
