This is truly exemplary singing. I've only sung Lucia once and that is a challenging and magnificent role. Devia singing in the original key is absolutely marvelous! It'd be wonderful to hear more productions as she sang it.

It was Festival of Opera and Ballet with sixteen representations (January 7- 28, 1986) of the "Grand Theatre” of Lodz (Poland). I was at the time director-assistant of many opera productions, including "Lucia di Lammermoor". I remember - Mariella Devia was nice at work and great on the stage! Maybe are preserved some records in the "Teatro Vittorio Emanuele II""?... I don't know of any recordings from theatre of Lodz. Sorry!

Angela Bender, tu devi aver bevuto molto. E' una cantante dalla voce dal brutto colore ed inespressiva, sempre con l'uovo in bocca. Una tecnica scaltrita non fa' la grande artista. E' una noia mortale. Impara dalla Sutherland o dalla Moffo.

@@davideferrari5702, questa ha un timbro triste, un po da vecchia. Avere una perfetta dizione serve a poco se l'espressione e' vuota. Con un bel colore e un virtuosismo superlativo ( Sutherland, che in teatro era diversa dai dischi e non si avvertiva nulla) risolvi tutto ed entri nella storia. Lasciamo stare la Callas che se dici così hai capito molto poco della faccenda e il discorso si chiude qua'.

@@fabriziogarzi9396 ecco... L"uovo in bocca" è proprio la definizione che cercavo ma non mi veniva... Uovo in bocca, voce da vecchia, canto a gallina. La dizione cristallina e "all'italiana" è ben altro. La Muzio l'aveva, Galli Curci anche... La Petrella... Tanto per nominarne alcune.

Lovely intonation, full voice, beautiful legato, dead-accurate coloratura. But I'm damned if I see what's unusual about it. All this music has always been sung by...Joan Sutherland, Beverly Sills...I imagine Callas sang it all, in one production or another,, too. I grew up on recordings and performances of this 'complete' Mad Scene.... Devia is hardly 'Mad' - there's no confusion, no vulnerability, no despair. She sounds like a mature woman very confident in what she is doing. There's virtually no drama... and the tempi are rather deliberate. That 'new cadenza' is not exactly stylistic and goes on too long...

You see, Devia looks like a very mature women and very confident. I mean there are videos from her back in 92' and she already looks like a 50+ y.o. No offense to Miss Devia, but she always looked more mature and hence sounded more mature. Her technique is as solid as a rock, so maybe that's also why she sounds so not-crazed :) Not the right temperament, I agree! But the singing, lol, hardly nowadays anyone can come up to that.

Yes, look for the French version of the score Lucie di Lammermoor, it was first done in French, then Italian. Try the Petrucci Library imslp.org

It is now available from Ricordi. Look for their critical edition of Lucia di Lammermoor published in 2022. All pieces there are in the original keys but there are no cadenzas as Donizetti didn't write them. The Mad Scene is in F and Lucia's first aria is half a step higher than what is normally performed.

@@ivancervi1825 , tanto per cominciare non e' originale perche' non c'e' in orchestra la Glass Armonica e invece in suo luogo il flauto come sempre. La cadenza e' sempre posticcia e Donizetti non ha scritto Mib sopracuti. Non ho il diapason sotto mano ma al massimo sara' mezzo tono sopra perche' quello si, Donizetti la scrisse cosi ma si esegue mezzo tono sotto da sempre, tranne forse la giovane Sills o Lily Pons o Dessay, i soprani che hanno difficolta' nei suoni centrali insomma.
