Thank you for mentioning the classical lines. This contemporary 'leg on cheek' thing always makes me think "gynae exam ouch!" - quite weird looking . Was it the otherwise wonderful Sylvie Guillem who started that off?

I could not agree more. Some comments below complain about her "slowness", but that is in fact a very special quality that few dancers have, i.e., giving the impression that you have all the time in the world and nothing you are doing is difficult.

What I love about May is that she doesn't dance gymnastically. She respects the tempo and flows through it. It's a gem at the Mariinsky, different from everyone. Not bashing at all other young dancers, of course. I'm a huge fan of Masha Khoreva and I really can't wait to see Daria Ionova promoted. May shines in a discrete way - her Giselle mad scene is priceless because she doesn't perform like an actress - she performs like an expressive ballerina, without overreacting, it's beautiful. Furthermore, we can see her evolution, she never stops improving. Can't wait to see her as Aurora, as Gulnare, as Odette/Odile, in Balanchine and Robins works - and I'd bet she'd excel in contemporary works. She's precious.

I acknowledge the refinements of may's art but find the Asian artists in all realms tend to be refiners rather than originators. And within that context I view her approach as refined, and at times overly refined. Not her fault and a fact rather than a judgement. It is how the Japanese mind has worked in all the arts, for thousands of years.
