Care Part 4: Angels on Earth is such an amazing song. It reminds me of when I lost my wife (cancer) during the pandemic... This track pays homage to the NHS Care workers who strived to help us all, putting their own lives at risk. I get incredibly emotional every time I here this...

The greatest band that hardly anyone knows. Song and album is about dealing with love ones during the pandemic

Wow… comparing Steve H with Yoko Ono 😅. He’s an incredible singer but in this song he’s keeping his voice very low and controlled. For understanding the beauty of his voice you should try to listen different songs. I suggest Neverland, Estonia, Easter, Fantastic place, Ocean cloud… anyway I started to listen Marrillion just some months ago

I have followed this band since 1990, so only really got into them after Fish left. The fact that Marillion have ‘progressed’ under 2 vastly different vocalists and lyricists is testament to their brilliance. For me, Steve H is an amazingly versatile singer. If you listen to ‘Beautiful’ or ‘Cover my eyes’ from his early days with the band, you’ll have both ends of their musical scope! Incredibly talented and lovely people.

The singer, Steve Hogarth, was 65 on this track. So his voice isn't as good as the earlier years. Compare it with the song The Space ('89)...😮 Please check out Neverland (live '09). Probably one of his best live performance. The song is awesome, it's a love song you'll love it for sure ❣️🧚‍♂️

From what I have heard in recent live performances Steve Hogarth has taken pretty good care of his voice and it is still quite strong. I haven't noticed any discernable drop off in range. He often plays with his voice to convey emotions and characters from the stories the band's songs tell. This song is dedicated to National Health Services in the UK and the opening part of it is meant to convey the voice of a feeble man affected by illness. It was written during the pandemic which greatly influenced its delivery.

Marillion is all about emotion, soul and beauty. They are really special live. They also have a 40 year catalogue of some 20 studio albums. The subtleties the are key to understanding them. I think that is why you started to warm to understand Steve Hogarth's voice more towards the end. I respect and appreciate your open mind and honest opinion. I'm not saying you need to like them a lot, and maybe not much at all. But, I have noticed that Marillion does need a few listens to get the full picture. Heres the payoff: The more you get them, the more they are like your best friend who knows how to make you feel good no matter whats happening.

I agree completely. Whenever I describe Marillion to someone, I always say, "listen to them loud in the background as you do what you do. If by the end of the album, you aren't floored, Play it again"! .................. As you know I'm sure digbirder, they will be hooked and crave a fix once they get it!

Thrilled that in just one listen for a band you do not know, you still "got" this song. You absolutely nailed the message, and happy to see it resonated. As mentioned in other comments, these boys are no spring chickens, and this is not Steve Hogarth's best vocal performance over the course of his 35 years with the band...I did like that you acclimatized to it along the way and could appreciate the performance more as the song carried to the end. Nice reaction video.

This part of the lyrics always gets me: I saw a man paint a woman on the wall Mask on her face, screen over her eyes Hospital clothing, worried and exhausted A thing of beauty, a thing of care Pure class right there, right there The angels in this world are not in the walls of churches When I hear this part I have a tear in my eyes. And to compare Steven Hogarth´voice with Yoko Onos is somewhat strange. He is in his 60s and there is certain brittleness, but man - lsiten to him live...

This is not the best introduction to Marillion; this is only for seasoned veterans. For a more representative compilation of some of their best work, watch the "All One Tonight" concert footage from the Royal Albert Hall 2017. The second half of that concert, on disk two of the DVD, is truly awe-inspiring.

Steve Hogarth is one of the best frontmen and vocalists around. On this track he’s using his voice in a different way to create a “feel” for the theme.

I’d say his voice has aged quite a lot. To me it was a shock to how old he sounds in this song. It would be nicer to hear him singing a few years back he’ll surprise you. And preferably watch them live he can be quite mesmerizing. They’re definitely a group you want to see live end if it’s their videos.

Interesting 🤔 ??? Singers tone and style is a little depressed melon collie for the tempo of the song 🤔?? My Question ❓ Instead of lyrics.. pair it with Visual Stimulation....🤔 Random Nature and Earth 🌍🌎 landscape and finish with pictures from Hubble telescope 🔭 and deep 🌌 space 😱😉. A Song this long needs more stimulation of sense's?? 🤷 If that makes sense 😉 more of a Destination an adventure 👍😉 Take Care and Stay Safe 🙏✌️🤠

First of all, the vocalist, Steve Hogarth, is tough to evaluate.. In the studio, he adopts a very breathy, near falsetto, or full falsetto, head voice, which he is apparently convinced conveys all sorts ot emotion. I agree with you. It is not a good sound, and this is my favorite band of all time. On stage, he belts out the lyrics in his chest voice while acting them out as best he can, and the result is stunning. I've often rated him as the best of all current male vocalists. If you should come back to Marillion, alsways, always, always, elect a live peformance. They are st least ten times superior than any of the studio cuts This entire album is pretty dreary and preachy. Some fans say it is their very best. I'd rate it near the worst in their catalog. Hogarth admitted that he really no longer feels comfortable at his age writing love songs, and with his career winding down due to aging, he's decided to preach to all his fans about major world issues like Covid, pollution, child labor, the supposed "climate crisis", and so on and so on. It makes me so sad to see the shift in Marillion's lyrical message. They've got some of the most fabulous love songs I've ever heard, and we apparently are never going to get any new ones. "Care" is the best song from the album, and if anybody got the shaft from Covid, its the nurses and other medical staffers who were forced to work lots of overtime during the height of the pandemic under trying conditions. With family and friends banned from hospitals, the staff had to take over the role of emotional support for patients on top of providing medical care. For the most part few people noticed their dedication, so it is nice they finally got a musical tribute for what they did. "Care", or any song off ot "An Hour Before its Dark" is not a good entry point to Marillion, and I fear you won't come back to the band after hearing this one song. That would be your great loss, so for your sake, and not mine, give a live performance a chance. Here's a link to "Neverland", which happens to be the greatest love song ever written for an older couple with some mileage on their relationship. kzbin.info/www/bejne/omSxmYGwbpJ4haM

I love Marillion. But this song...not so much. It sounds so disjointed. I admire their approach in the studio...jamming and putting puzzle pieces together, thanks to Mike Hunter, but on this song H's vocals and lyrics just feel shoehorned into the mix. And doesn't sound good. It doesn't vibe.

Now you've gone and done it. Fish is the worst singer who has ever fronted a band that managed to achieve any degree of commercial succes. I'd remain quiet about that fact if you had just refrained from claiming he's superior to Hogarth.
