Marilyn Horne sings "Beautiful Dreamer" by Stephen Foster with Martin Katz at the piano.
From: VAI DVD 4323 Marilyn Horne in Recital - Milan, 1981
Though Marilyn Horne is known mostly for her virtuosic operatic roles, she is a superb recitalist who can scale her powerful voice down to the more intimate requirements of the recital stage.
In 1981, she appeared at Milans La Scala opera house in a recital consisting of music by Italian, German, Spanish, French and American composers. Horne was in particularly superb form that evening, partnered brilliantly by Martin Katz at the piano.
93 minutes, color, mono.

I will forever remember taking my Mother to hear Miss Horne sing in recital at Jorgensen Hall, University of Connecticut. She sang a wonderful program but when she sang Beautiful Dreamer as an encore I heard my Mom sigh and just melt with enjoyment. I'm so glad I was able to take her to hear Marilyn Horne. Rest in Peace Mom.

It's so nice that she actually sings the second verse (Beautiful Dreamer, out on the sea..) I really like the second verse, but its so difficult to find a version where the singer actually sings it. Even worse there's version that seem long enough, but instead the singer just sings the first verse twice, I mean why?? >_>

This is one of songs I first heard when my father brought home an old wind-up gramaphone with a stack of 78s and a little silver box ful[ of needles. The sound crackled and wavered but we imagined the singer. Now I can hear without winding, wavering and crackling. Thanks for sharpening my memory with this offering! and thank you Musical Max for sharing.

Beautiful dreamer, wake unto me, Starlight and dewdrops are waiting for thee; Sounds of the rude world, heard in the day, Lull'd by the moonlight have all pass'd away! Beautiful dreamer, queen of my song, List while I woo thee with soft melody; Gone are the cares of life's busy throng, Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me! Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me! Beautiful dreamer, out on the sea, Mermaids are chanting the wild Lorelei; Over the streamlet vapors are borne, Waiting to fade at the bright coming morn. Beautiful dreamer, beam on my heart, E'en as the morn on the streamlet and sea; Then will all clouds of sorrow depart, Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me! Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!

Yes, but poor Stephen Foster died penniless, his situation was dire ... as you might know, he sold his wonderful songs for a pittance because of his desperation. He inspired our laws that protect songwriters. I wouldn't return to those days for anything...degenerate though we may be now.

Yes, I agree with you. It is a national disgrace that Stephen Foster and Edgar Poe died in poverty - these genisues who contributed so much to our culture and who enriched our lives beyond measure. When i was a child, I used to play Foster tunes on the piano - and when I discovered that he died so young and in poverty, it made me terribly sad. Artistic genius should be reconigzed and respected and supported in every way. Mozart died in poverty, too. Schubert as well. These geniuses created music that makes life worth living (well, almost!) - and for that, we owe them a great deal.

I understand what you mean about the warmth of her voice. There is a good chance that you would also love other warm-voiced opera singers. The tenors and sopranos usually get the best roles because of the excitement of the high notes, but there are some wonderful mezzo and bass roles that you would probably love, plus some dramatic singers with high voices with warmth. You might even learn to love opera, as I did. Also, don't ignore singers of art songs, like this. There is a wealth of that literature -- not opera -- with singers of all voice types and ranges in KZbin recordings. If you care, listen to some by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Janet Baker, and other mezzos, baritones and basses.

This reminds me of the time that our Marguerite house choir sang this song for the annual inter-house singing competition at Good Shepherd Convent in Sri Lanka. I was 11 at that time, and therefore asked to stand in the first row on stage. We were all from age 11 - 16. What a beautiful and enjoyable experience that was. Thanks to the wonderful Irish Sisters of the Good Shepherd who taught us to develop a taste for good music and the appreciation of it.

Yes, she sang many classic American songs, including others by Foster. Baritone Thomas Hampson has also sung a lot of Stephen Foster songs. He even released an entire album devoted just to Foster's music. Stephen Foster at La Scala. Now that's something. And this is done gorgeously.

that piano was DEFINITELY tuned by a European, you can tell because it's slightly off, which all European pianos are tuned that way, not sure why, but, it's true. When I used to accompany different American opera singers to Europe, we'd have to take an American or Canadian piano tuner with us where ever we went to ensure the piano I used was tuned to American opera standards.. not sure if they still do that today, but, I sure hope so! Not that any American opera "singers" are anywhere near as good as what we had 40-45 years ago (Marilyn Horne, Beverly Sills and the like, just sayin.........).
@SilverSingingMethod
@SilverSingingMethod 9 жыл бұрын
+kerryincolumbus No pianos are tuned correctly unless it is to 432 hz which is what the classical composers required. Verdi, in fact, wrote that his music should only be played at that tuning. Most today are 440 or even 444 which is strident. It is also very bad for the voice.

Maybe that was the wayit used to be, besides what they were emphesizing or used to do. All that was preference and the mood of the audience to the predictably unpredicted tune came out of nowhere fast like a cannon lighter who always lighted the triggering wire longtime after the firing command had been given, so as to the sigularity in the notes - off the beat and out of tune. Voila!
