I really liked it. I think it sucks that Manson can't get away from the idea he has to shock and i think it's sort of unfair to criticise an album for that. I don't think he's trying to be shocking as much as he just likes playing with the themes and has a fascination with it and them and the violence and sex on the album is just part of the story of the album and personally. I mean if he really wanted to be shocking i'm sure he could do something outrageous. People get offended pretty easily nower days. If you listen to the album without going in with the idea he's trying to shock you rather just listen to it in the framework of the story of the album i think it's better.
@KingHarlequin88
@KingHarlequin88 6 жыл бұрын
I agree that he's no longer the "shock rocker" he once aimed to be, and therefore we shouldn't judge his output based on its compliance to that angle, but based on a single listen of the full album I think it ain't great even with this in mind. I'm going to listen to it again more over the next few weeks, but its the first album ever minus Portrait* that I've felt has no "I can listen to this entire album in one sitting" appeal.

Honestly his last few albums have been AMAZING. I didn't really enjoy eat me drink me tho the concept was good. I'm really under the impression if you dont enjoy his music you're literally just not smart enough. It all is very symbolic and deep. His whole thing is to make you THINK. If you just want something "shocking " it isnt going to please you. He is a true artist

there’s actually a series of extremely rare VHS footage of anthony when he was younger (probably 6 or 7 years old) in some really plain looking bathroom. at first you can’t see anthony but you soon hear the disturbing screeches as the camera pans towards one of the corners of the bathroom. anthony balances his head on the shit stained ground under him, upside down, completely naked, sixteen chicken nuggets in his ass. the man holding the camera dumps, with his free hand, 8 boxes of 50 piece chicken mcnuggets that he got for only $20 dollars on anthony. the screaming never stops 7/10

Here's the thing. We are always going to need the themes that Marilyn Manson likes to play with. The religious right might not have the same PUBLIC power they once held, but they still hold a lot of influence in social spheres and behind the scene. Sure it might not seem to be the same level of "offensive", but he still points out the hypocrisy and delusions that religion might push onto a LARGE percentage of the population. What exactly is wrong about Manson taking refuge in his music? Like you said, he's been public enemy number one for a long time. In his age it would make sense to change the approach from this outright attack into more of an emotional and introspective point on how he and his music now stand in context to his ever changing surroundings. He still makes the points he wants to make, better than most out there too, just while also writing more inward facing material. The lyrics might seem to sway in a slightly comical ways, but at the same time they add to his own mythos as the "hand grenade that never stops exploding" or the "Antichrist Superstar" . Songs like Kill4Me and Threats of Romance really highlight this. They play into the image that he has created as someone that is there to bring about chaos, control, and destruction, as well as questioning the establishment. I wholeheartedly disagree with your conclusions.

In all seriousness, I'm surprised. I thought this was a great album considering how he went back to his classic sound in a way. And yet you give Lil Pump a 7/10 when if you think about it, all the songs sound the exact same along with lyrics being repeated over and over again. Good review though Anthony.

There was bits and pieces of good shot sprinkled here and there throughout the album. There was also Tattooed Backwords. The worst song he's ever made.

Definitely agree that Manson is veering towards tepidness in terms of how shocking he is. Take the SAY10 single, for example. I love that song, but the difference between the teaser video and the actual released video is disappointing. What happened to the decapitated Trump? It's obvious that there was legal or managerial intervention at that point and he backed out of that. And his endless badgering of Christianity is getting stale. It's just not that offensive anymore. Why couldn't the SAY10 teaser have shown him ripping up a Koran instead of a Bible? Now *that* would be interesting.

Ripping up a Quran is going to get a lot of people really angry. The thing with Christianity is that you’re attacking a majority, if you attack Muslims you attack a minority (in US obviously). Back in the 90s it was Marylin who was being bullied, doubt he would want to become a bully himself. Also, this guy was raised as a Christian and knew a lot of Christians, that’s the reason why he sings about it so much. Same with black metal bands who constantly cry about Christianity. It’s because most of them were raised as one.

There's never too much badgering of Christianity and personally I don't think there's enough of it. Logic and science should take priority over magic and fairy tales every time. Kids are brainwashed the moment they have the ability to understand things, it's taught in schools. It need abolished.

Anthony big fan of Manson, and like you I like his older stuff better but I can appreciate his new stuff to a certain extent. As a suggestion, do you think you could review Marilyn Manson's albums from Portrait of an American Family all the way to High end of Low? It would be really cool to get your thoughts. You're reviews are awesome!

I think this album was way too hyped up. It was a very hard album to live up to. JE$U$ CRI$I$ was a bad song until the very middle of it. However, I find myself enjoying a lot of these songs on here more than I’ve enjoyed in a long time with his music. If I were to rate I’d give it a strong 8/10.

He's an older dude and he wants to be Dark Bowie. From the sound of it, this a 'Aladdin Sane'/coasting moment, where he's maintaining his new momentum and capitalizing on this new sound he cultivated on TPM. I really like the blue-metal-southern-roots thing going on... I can't believe that there hasn't been dark music that's so centered on the blues

I love this album. I can listen to the entire album and not skip a song. My favorites are KILL4ME, SAY10, Blood Honey, Tattooed In Reverse, JE$U$ CRI$I$, Revelation #12, WE KNOW WHERE YOU FUCKING LIVE, Saturnalia, Heaven Upside Down, and Threats of Romance. Oh, that’s the entire album 😂

I love this album. It might not be on the same level as the Pale Emperor, but it's still Manson performing his art without compromise. Maybe it's time to admit you've outgrown this music, Melon. Born Villain, despite it's mastering flaws, had incredible songs. Hip hop is much more your wheelhouse.

I gotta be honest, as much as I was looking forward to hearing what Anthony had to say and personally liking it more myself, I still would agree with a number of points here. For every golden track like the 2 aforementioned highlights, there are just moments I don't feel click as well. JE$U$ CRI$I$ is not as shocking as it would have been 20 years ago, and the last 2 tracks are just not what I go to Marilyn Manson for and for good reason. Still, I would give it a Light 7 and recommend anyone reading this to try it out, and I hope KILL4ME gets a shocking music video that makes it chart. (If only for a week) It's Manson's best in years, but that's as far as I'll say

I actually do enjoy this album. I think the reason why we are not seeing a lot of the shock, hard hitting songs as we are use too is mainly because he has matured and moved on. I watched a couple of his recent interviews and he pretty much wants to make whatever makes him happy, which is understandable.

I honestly think Manson’s downfall has been how slow most of the songs have been since EMDM. Songs like The Beautiful People and Rock is Dead and pretty much anything on GAOG are all so driving and when he has songs on which he can basically attack the listener at a fast pace, he kills it, but all these songs seem so slow to get anywhere. Up those BPM’s, Brian. Let’s do it.

Hey Anthony, I think you served this album it's justice! Personally, I'd say that most of the ideas Manson tries to capture in these tracks come off seemingly weak to me, or even rather mediocre in some spots because compared to previous records. by the time I listened to Pale Emperor, I took notice to handfuls of evidence that the man is drying out. Also, Anthony, I was wondering if you can review either two of Modest Mouse's first albums. I think that I would like to hear your thoughts on the Long Drive album. Good morning, from MD

I'm being a little silly. I'd give it a 4 or 5. I basically agree with Anthony; it's an extremely disappointing album with bad vocals and lyrics for the most part, but I don't really hate it. There's a few good tracks, but very flaccid mostly.
