He did a great job of representing himself in this interview. That's why I've always respected Manson. He always knew exactly what he was trying to accomplish with the extreme nature of his art. It wasn't only about being shocking or trying to subversive. He was trying to express what the world really needed to see and needed to learn to accept about its own darker nature. He wasn't an agent of hatred, but was artistically trying to reflect the hatred of society back to itself. There was a Jungian element to what he was trying to reflect, and American society was kind of lost in a propagandist dream world at the time. And he respectfully recognized and and gave due credit to the people who he knew eere inevitably gonna push back on that. That's a level of class and sophistication that's very rare.

The thing he said that always stuck with me: "EVERYbody's got a presentation" & this was back when one of the most common things you would hear about Manson was "it's just a shtick," or "he's only doing it to get attention," etc. This goes for eve-ry-bo-dy, particularly if you are in ANY kind of media production, but the vast majority of the time goes for average every day folks. YOU PRESENT the way YOU want people to perceive you. YOU GO OUT dressed a certain way (for certain functions,) TO GET ATTENTION. 9 times out of 10 you're not a person who is innocent of this. You could be Marilyn Manson or you could be Tom Dickhead, Christion youth group pastor. You likely have a curated presentation for the rest of the world.

I think you don't understand what journalism and interviews like this are for. He is not there pushing his agenda or saying anything he thinks. He is asking questions worried people would ask and lets him answer and explain, offers a platform for him to tell his point of view. Echo chambers and people patting each others backs do not do that. Reporters/interviewers are never there for their own opinions. That's social media, where everyone thinks they are relevant and argue. He doesn't think he's relevant, but simply does his job. does it well and respectfully, listens till the end and shuts up about himself.

I remember back when I watched this on youtube, something like 10 years ago? I was a teenager at the time and I really hated Bill O'Reilly. Boy, how times have changed lol. I never realized how much of a pretentious tool Marilyn Manson was. While everyone should be accountable for their own actions and not the actions of others, I can't help but wonder if people freaking out about this stuff back then, had a point. As many other commenters have mentioned, Marilyn Manson is absolutely tame in comparison to what we have nowadays. Not even mentioning the fact that it is absolutely having a negative effect on people, especially kids.
@MadlockGilaniАй бұрын
Could you expand on what you're trying to say? I'm sorry but the notion that Marilyn Manson was/is inherently harmful or that he had a uniquely negative impact on impressionable audiences, particularly when compared to modern media, is an oversimplification that doesn't hold up under closer scrutiny. His entire career arc and music has always had a potent message that is far greater than what is portrayed from a third person perspective. Also the claim that modern entertainment is definitively “worse” and “absolutely having a negative effect on people, especially kids,” is speculative and fails to acknowledge that cultural anxieties simply shift targets over time. Every era has its supposed “corrupting influences,” whether it’s rock music, rap lyrics, violent video games, or social media trends. Manson has done a net positive in the grand scheme of things. He challenged social norms and provoked society to question rigid moral and aesthetic boundaries, and he provided many young listeners who felt alienated or misunderstood with a sense of community, understanding, and validation through his music.
